2 TMSC Objective To develop standards for Tactical Microgrids including: Safety, Protection, & Human Factors Electrical Interconnection Communications, Controls, & Cybersecurity A consortium approach will be used to incorporate relevant organizations such as, DOE, NIST, and industry and related on-going work to develop a joint standard. This vision involves near real time management of generators, renewables such as solar and storage with intelligent management that minimizes the size and variability of the loads, to minimize the total mission weight (more than 40%) of fuel and power equipment. 2

Fueled Generation Renewables Inverter/Converter Intelligent Management System Energy Storage & Conditioning Power Data Distribution Loads Many configurations for different purposes, but they all have sources, loads, and distribution and the controls to enable it to operate as a single system. 4

10 Recommended Requirements An open, modular, scalable architecture that provides autonomous advanced power generation and distribution networks. Open: A commercial and contractual property using freely available standards to define key interfaces Modular: A technical design based property that enables a system to be broken into modules that can be individually added, removed, modified, or upgraded without requiring major modification to the rest of the system Scalable: The ability of the system to be enlarged or contracted according to the operational mission Architecture: The model of framework that defines the system structure. 10

11 Recommended Requirements An open, modular, scalable architecture that provides autonomous advanced power generation and distribution networks. Operates without the need for active supervision of: Dispatching sources and loads Segmentation of the grid (intentional and unintentional) Self-discovery: When an advanced power system is energized, the system must be able to determine the topology of the system. Each device must be recognized, authenticated and authorized to operate as part of the systems. Prognostics and Diagnostics: self-diagnostics capabilities allows for smarter employment of equipment and military electricians 11

13 Recommended Requirements Cybersecure systems that protect systems and operators from internal and external threats Baked-in superior total-system cyber protections at the device, system, and operator against internal and external threats Device: Devices must be authenticated and authorized into the system System: Protect system from unauthorized or misbehaving devices Misbehaving devices can be an equipment malfunction or malicious code Operator: Protect operator and system from poor decisions or unauthorized actions or access via user authorizations External: Protect system from malicious external threats 13
