2 Message from the Prime Minister Malaysia is pleased and honoured to chair ASEAN in the year the ASEAN Economic Community will be actualised. We are also delighted to welcome all delegates to the ASEAN and related Summits and associated events. As Chair of ASEAN, we hope to focus on People Centred ASEAN so that ASEAN becomes more relevant to the ordinary people of ASEAN and develop a sense of Aseaness. We welcome the annual initiative of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) to organise the ASEAN Leadership Forum (ALF) held alongside the April Summit of ASEAN. This year the ALF travels from Nay Pyi Taw, Phnom Penh, Jakarta and Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur and will be held alongside the ASEAN Summit on 26 th and 27 th April The ASEAN Leadership Forum has become institutionalised as a leading regional programme, bringing together Government, Business, Civil Society and Thought Leaders to deliberate on the future of ASEAN and to debate the issues and driving forces shaping the future of ASEAN. I believe this year s Forum will help define ideas for a post 2015 vision for ASEAN and that the deliberations at the ALF can be very useful inputs and feedback for the leaders. I am confident that the ASEAN Leadership Forum will continue to play a useful role in being a bridge between Government, Business and Civil Society. It will also enable the business community to be updated on new developments in ASEAN and the prospects ahead arising from the full implementation of the AEC. The engagement with the younger generation as future leaders is also timely and relevant. Once again I compliment ASLI as well as the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) for organising this timely and apt Forum. I welcome all delegates to Kuala Lumpur and wish you a pleasant stay and successful deliberations. YAB Dato Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak Prime Minister of Malaysia
3 12 th ASEAN LEADERSHIP FORUM FORWARD ASEAN: One Community, One Vision, One People Malaysia will host the 26 th ASEAN Summit on 26 th & 27 th April The Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) will, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, be holding the 12 th ASEAN Leadership Forum, which is held annually in conjunction with the April Summit of ASEAN. The ASEAN Leadership Forum (ALF) has been held in Nay Pyi Taw, Phnom Penh, Jakarta, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in past years and have been attended by and addressed by Leaders of ASEAN such as President Thein Sein of Myanmar, Prime Minister YAB Dato Sri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia, Vice President Jusuf Kalla of Indonesia, then President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, then Prime Minister of Thailand Abhisit Vejjajiva and former President Fidel Ramos among others. The ALF brings together Government, Business, Civil Society and Thought Leaders to discuss and reflect on the challenges and key issues facing ASEAN and what each year will bring to ASEAN as it journeys towards an ASEAN Community. This year is especially critical as the ASEAN Economic Community will be realised at the end of The Forum will enable the private sector to take stock of what has been achieved, where the shortcomings are and what more can be done to further strengthen community building and ASEAN integration. The ALF has been widely recognised as a high-powered Forum providing timely platforms for a critical discussion of the strategic issues facing ASEAN and to share valuable knowledge and information on the future of ASEAN. ALF enables a senior executive interchange among key Government, Business, Civil Society and Thought Leaders to feel the pulse of ASEAN and the tempo of development in the region. This year the realisation of the AEC will make the Forum more interesting as participants debate the future of ASEAN competiveness, having moved from community to connectivity and centrality. The ALF will enable participants to be updated on the AEC and other key developments in the region such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) as well as The Transpacific Partnership (TTP) Agreement and how these will benefit ASEAN businesses. The ALF is a must-attend Forum for those interested in being updated on ASEAN. It is highly relevant for business leaders, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and researchers in ASEAN and civil society groups keen on regional developments. Key questions on ASEAN will be answered and debated. The Forum will give voice to business leaders, think tank leaders and young leaders to share their thoughts and perspectives on how ASEAN can progress and benefit them. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Senior Government Officers of ASEAN countries Academic Scholars and Researchers Businessmen, Entrepreneurs and Investors Chairmen and CEOs of ASEAN and multinational companies operating in ASEAN Consultants, Investment Analysts and Fund Managers Bankers Property Developers Manufacturers SMEs BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING Assess the future of ASEAN its potential and possibilities Review the progress and performance of ASEAN in the past years Evaluate the strategic challenges and key issues facing ASEAN Discuss how the business community can benefit more from regional integration Address issues and concerns of the younger generation in ASEAN Promote a greater sense of ASEAN consciousness Learn about the progress of various ASEAN initiatives and Master Plans Identify business and investment opportunities from regional integration and trade with China, Japan, Korea, India and other ASEAN partners Networking opportunities with business and Government Leaders
