14 The Yield: Transforming Tasmanian Oyster Farming Challenge The Australian oyster industry, worth about $100 million, is currently losing $25 million yearly from rain-related closures Weather closures have cost the industry on average $4.3 million annually since 2013 The POMS virus, which grows in warm water, is wiping out Australian oyster farms Strategy The Yield collects data from in-estuary sensors developed in partnership with Bosch, which then relay information via an Intel gateway into Microsoft s IoT Hub in the Microsoft Azure cloud alongside national weather data. It measures current and future water depth, salinity and temperature in real time, so growers and regulators can accurately predict when it will rain and if conditions are prone to POMS. Microsoft Azure Machine Learning drives The Yield s patented predictive algorithms. Results Tasmanian oyster industry to save $6.7 million a year by reducing closures by 30 per cent and detecting POMS conditions Productivity increased by 25 per cent as growers schedule labour as it s needed Using Microsoft s Cloud as the technology foundation for the system will allow the solution to be rolled out internationally across both the agriculture and aquaculture market.
