5 Greening ICT (1/2) Fixed Network Operator Energy Efficiency Benchmark Standard energy efficiency KPIs and toll kit for telecom operators to monitor energy performance Proposed standard tested and fine tuned in pilot benchmarking exercise Created the basis for an energy efficiency best practices platform Solving the E waste Problem (StEP) Academy Jointly organized by GeSI, StEP and United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU ISP) Share existing knowledge and research into effective e waste management and regulation with policymakers, recyclers and other stakeholders from developing countries

6 Greening ICT (2/2) An Energy Aware Survey of Mobile Phone Chargers An analysis of the most commonly available mobile phone chargers and handheld devices, evaluating the correlation between their rated power and mechanical and electrical characteristics Findings used in the development of an ITU standard for a one size fits all power adapter and charger (see Recommendation L.1000 on Universal power adapter and charger solution for mobile terminals and other hand held ICT devices) An Energy Aware Survey of ICT Device Power Supplies Joint GeSI ITU report analyzing the mechanical, electrical and environmental characteristics of the most commonly available external power supplies (>300 devices verified) Also provided input to ITU Recommendation L.1000

8 Upcoming developments The SASF project (1/2) Sustainability Assessment Standard Framework (SASF) for the global ICT industry: developing a comprehensive framework to assess the sustainability of ICT products and services, to be progressively improved as a sector wide recognized standard 1. Mapping of existing tools/frameworks 2. Stakeholders input (F2F/webinars) 3. SASF development 4. Stakeholders input 5. Pilots 1. Seven sustainability frameworks assessed Key findings: Only a few of the available frameworks address social aspects Services, networks and data centers not included in most frameworks Varying level of transparency on assessment criteria
