7 Efforts in the Industry AMD claims a 41% improvement in power consumption over similarly configured Intel servers Primarily due to the buffered memory required by Intel server Difference decreases to near parity at full load New Load distribution algorithms to maximize server efficiency Increase average server utilization from 15% to much higher Claims of over 70% reduction in IT energy consumption Optimized server equivalent to 4 tons of CO 2 (1.5 cars annually) Your mileage may vary..

8 Trends in 10GBASE-T Semiconductor Power dissipation remains a concern Initial copper 10G chips consumed 12 watts Move towards lower power dissipation Moving to next-generation process technology reduces 10GBASE-T silicon Power (Combined Sources, ITRS, IEEE802.3)

10 IEEE 802.3az EEE Goals Utilize high performance cabling Exploit low utilization periods Establish protocol to coordinate transition between low and high data rates Maintain link status with no dropped frames or corruption during transition Backward compatible with legacy 10BASE-T chips Automated adjustments are desired

11 EEE & 10 GbE 1Gb Subset PHY Summary Fast transitions needed between 10GBASE-T and 1000BASE-T Significant power savings can be achieved, reducing consumption from 10W to 500mW Implementation complexity potentially less than shifting between standard PHYs

Utilizes high performance cabling

15 EEE & Gigabit Simplex/Duplex Technique Simultaneous Full Duplex to Full Duplex Turn off echo cancellers and hybrids for 10GBASE-T or 1000BASE-T Next canceller is usually less complex than echo canceller

16 EEE & 10Base-T Modernization Reduce transmit amplitude for 10BASE-T Match modern chip voltages for lower power consumption Take advantage of low duty cycles Increase attractiveness to include 10Mb/s in modern multispeed implementation Backward compatibility with legacy transmit voltage requirements is maintained
