2 Wednesday, October 4 th, :00 a.m. Networking and Refreshments 8:30 a.m. Welcoming and Opening Remarks Andrew Pender, Associate Director 8:45 a.m. Presentation and Discussion: Is Paying the Ransom Your Disaster Recovery Plan? 10:00 a.m. Break This year has seen a large increase in damaging ransomware attacks affecting both the public and private sector. Campaigns such as Wannacry and Petya have caused large financial losses, harm to brand reputation and an impact to critical infrastructure, forcing many organizations to re-think their business continuity and disaster recovery strategies. During this presentation, we will discuss the requirement for organizations to have a proper business resumption plan in place using the backdrop of the ransomware epidemic. During this presentation, we will discuss the following: Overview of business continuity - understanding the various components The need for a business continuity program Importance of governance within your program Highlights from the Business Continuity Management (BCM) Program Benchmarking Study Best practices to ensure the success of your business continuity program Peter Morin, Director Advisory Services KPMG LLP 10:30 a.m. Panel Presentation and Discussion: Business Continuity Structure/Governance Models The panel discussion will explore the different models for business continuity and emergency management structures where business continuity should sit and be governed in relation to emergency management. Panelists have been asked to answer three questions from the perspective of their organizations: 1. Where does business continuity and emergency management sit in your organization and what do their reporting lines/governance look like? 2. Why are the two functions structured and governed as they are in your organization? 3. What are the pros and cons of this structure/governance model? Suggested Panelists Steve Lesiuta, Director, Emergency Management and Fire Protection, Ontario Power Generation Patrick Hart, Lead, Enterprise Risk Management, Payments Canada Michael R. Galin, Director, Risk Management, Corporate Business Continuity Office, TELUS Robert Kipp, Acting Manager, Critical Infrastructure Program, New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety 2
3 12:00 p.m. Lunch 12:45 p.m. Case Study and Discussion: Canadian Bank Note 1:45 p.m. Break Canadian Bank Note (CBN) dates back to 1897, when it started out as Canada s trusted security printer. Today, operating in over 80 countries across the globe they apply the highest standards to the design, development and integration of secure, leading edge technology for governments. They have deployed complex solutions that secure borders, protect national currencies and generate revenue for government social initiatives. Canadian Bank Note works with governments across the globe to create secure and trusted currencies, driver and vehicle information, border security documents, national identification and registry, excise control and lottery and gaming. CBN s operations are mission critical and ensuring that risks are mitigated for security, emergency events, and business continuity are imperative. In this presentation Tom will discuss with members how the CBN team dealt with an unprecedented and unforeseen event that would occur on what was supposed to be just another day at work and that would not only push the limits of business continuity for CBN but would shape new and insightful learnings going forward for their team. Tom will cover: What happened on that day and how the CBN Crisis Management and Business Continuity Plan was enacted The major impacts of the event and how the BC Plan measured up Key Learnings: What went wrong and what went right Tom Raine, Executive Director, Security Canadian Bank Note 2:00 p.m. Case Study and Discussion: The presentation will provide an overview of and its approach to business continuity. The talk will focus on three key themes including risk management, operational integration and continuous improvement. Highlights of current developments and activities will further plug you in to Emera. Nick Peters, Director of Business Continuity 3:00 p.m. Facilitated Discussion Dr. Satyamoorthy Kabilan, Director, National Security and Strategic Foresight 4:00 p.m. Wrap-Up and Adjournment 6:00 p.m. Dinner and Presentation: The Five Fishermen 1740 Argyle Street, Halifax NS B3J 2B6 (8 minute walk from the hotel) 3
4 Keynote Presentation: 100 th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion December 6 marks one hundred years since the Halifax Explosion, the wartime accident that caused the deaths of nearly 2,000 people, injured 9,000 and destroyed 2.5km of the city. The Explosion brought the First World War to Canada s shores and civilians primarily paid the price. This talk will uncover the events that caused the Explosion and, using new research, will illustrate how the city responded to the unprecedented circumstances. While so much focus has been placed on the American response, this talk will uncover the overshadowed aid and support Halifax received from across the province, the Maritimes, and the country. Further, the Explosion gravely impacted the civilians and the physical landscape of the city but to what extent did it set new precedents for responding to violent disasters both on a local and national scale? The 1945 Bedford Magazine explosion provided a local practice test. As the Halifax Explosion remains Canada s largest disaster, this talk will conclude with thoughts on emergency response plans that are in place as the result of the Halifax Explosion. If such a disaster struck again, what modern challenges face the city of Halifax? Is Halifax, or Canada for that matter, prepared and protected? Have we learned lessons from the wounded? Dr. Claire Halstead, Postdoctoral Fellow Saint Mary s University Thursday, October 5 th, :00 a.m. Networking and Refreshments 8:30 a.m. Welcoming Remarks Highlights from Previous Day Dr. Satyamoorthy Kabilan, Director, National Security and Strategic Foresight 8:45 a.m. Member Profile and Case Study: Canadian Blood Services 10:00 a.m. Break This session will provide an overview of Canadian Blood Services role in the health care system and will delve into their business continuity program and the unique challenges they face. Examples will also be provided of how Canadian Blood Services have been able to manage various types of incidents with success in adjusting their operations as required. Rick Trifunov, Director, Supply Chain Operations Planning Canadian Blood Services 10:30 a.m. Case Study and Discussion: City of Calgary 4
5 11:45 a.m. Wrap-Up 12:00 p.m. Adjournment This session will present the Calgary Emergency Management Agency s multi-year business continuity program to promote awareness and resilience to small businesses within Calgary. Findings from the initial phase of the program will be detailed, along with a look at future initiatives. Steven Mah, Leader, Corporate Business Continuity Calgary Emergency Management Agency NEXT MEETING: February 6 th and 7 th, 2018 Location: Ottawa Theme: Succession Planning in Emergency Management (Day 1) Responding/Mitigating Vehicle Borne Attacks (Day 2 Joint with the Centre for National Security) 5
