Economic Development Impact
You know the war story would be we had a company in the Lac du Flambeau area that bought a building, was bringing 30 jobs, that were good jobs, and realized after the fact that the internet service to their building was not good enough to have their business there. They ended up selling and relocating not in our area, which was disappointing to them, and disappointing to us also. --Joe Hegge, Executive Director, Grow North
Door County SAM PERLMAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MANAGER DOOR COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
What have we done about it? July 2001, Door County Technology Council forms and develops mission: The Door County Technology Council is made up of private and public sector organizations working to provide for the telecommunications infrastructure needs of Door County to improve the competitiveness of its businesses and the quality of life of its residents.
Continued An informal analysis of Tech Council members identified two main issues: Lack of redundancy High cost for limited broadband services In May 2002, the Tech Council and DCEDC commissioned an Infrastructure Assessment and reported the results at DCEDC s Annual Meeting. The following year, a Technology Needs & Market Study was prepared by Abacus Technologies.
What s the issue? Sadly, broadband is expensive, scarce or nonexistent depending on where in Door County one is located. Abacus Technologies, Consultant to DCEDC May 2003
Lobbying for advances SBC/Yahoo/AT&T DSL service in Sturgeon Bay Continued extension of Charter cable services Extended coverage in Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park and Northern Door Redundant fiber optic lines to Green Bay Improved backhaul to the web Discussions with several potential new service providers
Door County Economic Development Adjustment Plan, 2008 Strategy 6: Address common economic development base needs that support the the general Door County business community. Move to a New Economy model that includes and supports technology infrastructure. Tactic 6A: Support, develop and implement communication technology infrastructure that delivers reliable digital broadband access to the internet and other communication services. Leverage improvements in telecommunication infrastructure by marketing this technology to existing and new businesses.
Door County EDAP, 2008 Action Steps 1. Continue to educate citizens and business owners in the work and findings of the Door County Telecommunications Task Force. 2. Seek local, state and federal support for building telecommunications infrastructure in a rural county. 3. Develop promising and feasible approaches to providing broadband service to Door County. Use opportunities to further public debate and support for telecommunication infrastructure improvements. Develop a marketing plan that leverages the improvement in telecommunications to retain and attract businesses.
Improving telecommunications infrastructure Fiber Optic Backbone Installation Began with ARRA (Federal Stimulus) application 2011 Green Bay To Sturgeon Bay Sturgeon Bay to Gills Rock 4G service to all of Door County
Improving telecommunications infrastructure DSL for Northern Door and Washington Island Frontier purchases Northern Door territory from Verizon Improvements to prepare for DSL deployment in November 2012 Significant investments on Washington Island
Other Advances NEWWIS improvements Supporting infrastructure upgrades by local ISP Advocating for wireless tower ordinance height change Broadband GIS Coverage Map Creating map that can show what service coverage options are available at a specific site or property within the county Data provided by Wisconsin PSC Updated list of area service providers Let potential new businesses know their options
