My goal is to design and build systems that satisfy the performance/functionalities/properties preferred by these applications. I am particularly interested in concurrency control and data organization. OPT 2 : proposed a quantification of the quality of gradients in the stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm, and designed an optimizer for SGD that searches for the configuration parameters that train the model in the fastest way. CYA: proposed a human-in-the-loop (HIL) solution that interacts with the data owner and utilizes data owner s knowledge of missing data to assess the certainty and quality of the query answer. Intermittent Query Processing (IQP): proposed a new query execution model IQP to execute queries intermittently and frees resources for other workers in between the intermittent executions. RushMon: proposed an indicator of out-of-order executions and a real-time isolation anomalies monitor that efficiently protects the large-scale optimization algorithms from excessive isolation anomalies which could lead to incorrect results. BN3: proposed an new interpretation of the success of weak data consistency in large-scale machine learning and graph analytical algorithms. The sparsity of data and the random access of workers ensure the theoretically worst consistency less likely to happen.

2 HSync: advocated for the fine-grained parallelism that ensures the correctness and the convergence of the computation as a new paradigm of graph analytics, and designed and implemented an efficient in-memory graph analytical synchronous engine. Auto-Approximation: designed an innovative approach that automatically and systematically synthesizes a program to approximate the original graph analytical program. CatchW: studied how to dynamically re-balance the graph analytical workload in the distributed environment while minimizing the inter-partition communication. K-Reach: studied the problem of k-hop reachability queries in a directed graph, and proposed an efficient and succinct index to this class of query.
