Note: It is useful for the audience to have a basic understanding of UNIX and backup/recovery systems. 12 Chapter 1: About DXi Advanced Reporting Figure 1: DXi Advanced Reporting User Interface Overview Report Remote Management Extension Advanced Reporting is an extension to the DXi remote management interface. With Advanced Reporting, you can view an array of performance statistics for DXi, and see how those statistics change over time. Use this information to identify trends or to determine when a problem began. By seeing how various operations affect performance, you can use Advanced Reporting to optimize your network ecosystem and business procedures for backup, recovery, and replication. On Demand Reports Advanced Reporting runs on DXi, continually working in the background to log performance data. You can access this data on the Advanced Reporting Web-based interface. Reports are available on demand, meaning that you can check up-to-the-minute system status or view data for any time period after data logging began. Use the reports in Advanced Reporting to access performance and system statistics, such as the following: DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 2

13 Chapter 1: About DXi Advanced Reporting Capacity utilization Ethernet and Fibre Channel activity CPU load Data deduplication Space reclamation activities OST, Accent, and NetBackup Accelerator backups Per Share and Partition (Chargeback) information Zoom Feature You can use the report tools to zoom in or out on a specific time period. All graphs within a report display data for the same time period, allowing you to compare performance data between graphs in the same report or between different reports. Example You want to view information about used storage space for the current week. Display the Capacity report and zoom into the current week. Compare how storage has been allocated for the current week using the report's graphs. Historical Data Advanced Reporting maintains logged data for a maximum of six years. Using this feature, you can compare current system performance to past system performance to determine what changes impact your system. Example You can view the effects of new network configurations on your system by comparing its current statistical reports to past ones. You can then determine which configurations increase or decrease performance, and use this information to optimally configure your system. Usage Scenarios DXi storage presentations are optimized for backup usage rather than for file sharing. Advanced Reporting provides the best results when you take advantage of the system's preferred implementation. Backup application usage is typically characterized by the following: Aggregated name spaces and file contents Limited direct, active file access DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 3

14 Chapter 1: About DXi Advanced Reporting DXi Advanced Reporting Logging Database Limited browsing, scanning, or viewing of information Limited metadata manipulation (including rename) If you use the system for file sharing, you should test the sharing process to ensure acceptable behavior with respect to functionality, performance, replication, and recovery. Note: We do not recommend using Backup Exec with Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) over a CIFS protocol. GRT frequently needs to overwrite portions of and append data to existing files. This process is inconsistent with the DXi usage scenarios. Instead, we recommend using OpenStorage (OST). DXi Advanced Reporting Logging Database DXi Advanced Reporting records performance data in its logging database. The database resides on the DXi system where Advanced Reporting runs. Round Robin Database Advanced Reporting uses a round robin style for its logging database, allowing it to maintain a small, fixed size. When new logging data is added to the database, older data is overwritten, as needed, to maintain the database's fixed size. As a result, the logging database has a negligible impact on the system's storage capacity. Data Resolution The logging database records performance data at two-second intervals. Advanced Reporting aggregates this data over time to maintain different resolutions for different time periods. The database resolution is finer or more granular for recent events. The database resolution becomes coarser or less granular as you go back in time. The following table shows the resolutions that are maintained in the logging database for each time period. 15 Chapter 1: About DXi Advanced Reporting Date And Time Settings for DXi Advanced Reporting Performance Impact The logging of data performed by Advanced Reporting has a negligible impact on the operation and performance of DXi. Advanced Reporting captures most data once every two seconds, with a typical loop time of only 2 ms per capture. Advanced Reporting uses no more than 2 GB of total disk capacity for the logging database. Disk contention between Advanced Reporting and other system processes is rare. If it occurs, Advanced Reporting is given a lower priority than other system needs. Date And Time Settings for DXi Advanced Reporting Because data in the DXi Advanced Reporting database is time sensitive, you must correctly set the time and date on the DXi system before you install Advanced Reporting. To make sure the time and date are always correct, configure the system to use a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server. For help with this task, see the user s guide for your DXi system. Note: Not all Windows time servers offer NTP services. If a time server does not support the NTP protocol, you cannot use it as a time source for the system. In this case, a third party NTP application for Windows should work correctly. If the date and time are not set correctly on your system before you install Advanced Reporting, the following two issues can occur. Correlating Data to Events If the date and time are not correct on the system, it might be difficult to correlate Advanced Reporting data with replication activity, or to associate problems with events in the customer ecosystem. Example A report shows a problem occurred at 6:00 p.m. The time on the system is not set correctly, though. So, although the report shows the problem occurred at 6:00 p.m., the actual time the problem occurred was at 4:00 p.m. when the network became congested. Due to the time error, it may not apparent that the problem is associated with the network congestion. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 5

16 Chapter 1: About DXi Advanced Reporting Date And Time Settings for DXi Advanced Reporting Resetting the Date and Time If you set the date or time on the system forward and then switch it back, the Advanced Reporting tool will not record any data between the two time points, even if you have reset the system to the current time. This occurrence happens because the recording tool does not support data going backwards. As soon as you set a future time point, the tool sees that time point as current. The tool will not recognize data until the future time is met. Example If you set the date forward by a day and then reset it back to the current day, the recording tool will not record new data until the future time (the next day in this example) is reached. Access Advanced Reporting through your DXi system, either by logging on to your system's user interface (UI) or by navigating to Advanced Reporting using the system's IP address. Once you are logged on to Advanced Reporting, you can access various reports and associated graphs, control the information that is displayed, and change the time range for which data is reported. Compare data displayed on different graphs, within the same report or between reports, to look for patterns and trends that can help you determine relationships between events. Use these discovered relationships to understand when your system is performing its best and to troubleshoot problems. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 7

18 Chapter 2: Navigation Logging On and Off DXi Advanced Reporting Supported Web Browsers DXi Advanced Reporting is designed to run in any modern browser that supports the Adobe Flash Player plug-in version 10.x and higher. Browser software is not included with Advanced Reporting. You must obtain and install it separately. You must also install the correct version of the Adobe Flash Player plug-in for your operating system and browser. Advanced Reporting requires Adobe Flash Player version 10.x or higher. To download and install Flash Player, go to Note: Advanced Reporting does not support the 64-bit version of the Flash Player plug-in on Linux. Instead, use the 32-bit Flash Player plug-in and a 32-bit browser. Logging On and Off DXi Advanced Reporting Access DXi Advanced Reporting from a workstation on the same network as the DXi system for which you want to view reports. From the workstation, use a supported Web browser to log on to Advanced Reporting. Login Considerations Consider the following before logging on to Advanced Reporting. Login Types There are two types of system users: Monitors can view information on the system but cannot make changes. Administrators can view and change information on the system. In Advanced Reporting, monitors and administrators have the same functionality. Keep in mind, though, that when you log on to Advanced Reporting, you are also logging on to the DXi system. It is important to log on to Advanced Reporting with the appropriate user account. Login from Your System If you previously logged on to the system as a monitor or administrator, and the session has not timed out, you do not need to log on separately to Advanced Reporting. If you logged on as a monitor, you are automatically logged into Advanced Reporting as a monitor. If you logged on as an administrator, you are automatically logged into Advanced Reporting as an administrator. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 8

19 Chapter 2: Navigation Logging On and Off DXi Advanced Reporting Passwords Passwords are limited to 15 characters. Alphanumeric characters and special characters are allowed. For information about changing the monitor or administrator password, see the User's Guide for your DXi system. The default password is password. Log on to Advanced Reporting 1. From a Web browser, do one of the following to display the DXi Advanced Reporting Login window: From your system's user interface (UI) a. Log in to your system's UI. b. Click the DXi Advanced Reporting button located below the menus. From the Web browser Navigate to the following address: Figure 2: Login Window 2. In the Login Type field, select the appropriate user type. 3. In the Password field, enter the password associated with the selected user type. 4. Click Login to display the Advanced Reporting UI. In the upper right corner of the UI, click. 2. From the displayed options, click Log Off to end your Advanced Reporting session. DXi Advanced Reporting Features The DXi Advanced Reporting User Interface (UI) displays performance graphs for the currently selected report. When you first log on to the UI, the Overview report displays. By default, the report shows data for the last 7 days. Review the following features of the Advanced Reporting UI. Menu Reports View Description Use to select a report for which to view logged data. Use to show or hide the Toolbar, System Information bar, Timeline bar, Time Range bar, or View controls. Hide All Legends Hides the title and legend on all report graphs. About Use to display version and license information for your Advanced Reporting appliance. Toolbar The Advanced Reporting Toolbar includes the following options. Note: Click the arrow to the right of the Toolbar to hide it. Click the arrow again to redisplay the Toolbar. Options Buttons Info Span Controls Update Up Down Show All Hide All Description Shows or hides the Time Range bar. Shows or hides the System Information bar. Shows or hides the Timeline. Shows or hides the View controls. Updates the report's graphs with the latest logging data. Scrolls the graph order up by one graph. Scrolls the graph order down by one graph. 23 Chapter 2: Navigation DXi Advanced Reporting Features Options Description DB Export Exports the statistical database data from which Advanced Reporting graphs are generated to a file for offline viewing. To export the statistical database a. Click DB Export to export the database. When the export is complete, the DB Export Complete dialog box displays. b. Follow one of the displayed pathways to access the export file. User Menu Displays the user type currently logged on to Advanced Reporting. To log off a. Click the User Menu. b. Click Log Off. System Information Bar The System Information bar displays the following information. Field Model Serial Number Software Version Date and Time Description The model of the DXi device for which Advanced Reporting is running, such as DXi6900. The serial number of the DXi device for which Advanced Reporting is running. The version of software on which the DXi device is running. The current date, time, and time zone of the DXi device for which Advanced Reporting is running. Timeline and Time Range Bars The Timeline and Time Range bars allow you to control the span of time on which data is reported. For more information, see Working with DXi Advanced Reporting Time Ranges. View Controls The View controls allow you to navigate through the report's graphs, and to select the information displayed for each graph. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 13

Hides the title and legend on all report graphs. Scrolls the graph order down by one graph. Report Graphs Each report in Advanced Reporting is made of one or more graphs. These graphs display performance data for the selected time range. For more information, see DXi Advanced Reporting Graph Features. UI Home Page, Help, and Log Off Buttons Use the buttons located at the top right corner of the UI to do the following: Button Description Navigate to the DXi device's Home page. Access Help for Advanced Reporting. Log off from Advanced Reporting. URL Reference A link that provides a URL reference to the current report displays at the bottom of every Report window. You can copy and send this URL to a third-party, such as a coworker, who needs to access the report's information. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 14

25 Chapter 2: Navigation Working with DXi Advanced Reporting Time Ranges Working with DXi Advanced Reporting Time Ranges Use the Timeline bar, Time Range bar, or Dynamic Zoom feature indxi Advanced Reporting to select the time range for which data is displayed. By default, Advanced Reporting displays data for the most recent 7 days of logging. Viewing Tips Review the following tips to understand how time-range changes affect your view. Resolution When you change the time range, Advanced Reporting automatically adjusts the resolution of performance data. The resolution is finer more granular for shorter time ranges. The resolution is coarser less granular for longer time ranges. Preset Ranges When you apply a preset time range, Advanced Reporting resizes the time range while maintaining the center of the time range. Example If you are currently viewing a one-week time range that goes from Sunday to Saturday, applying the 1d preset displays data for Wednesday, which is at the center of the weekly range. Scale Regardless of the time range being graphed, Advanced Reporting scales all logged data to use the entire width of each graph. Timeline Bar Use the Timeline bar to select preset time ranges, move the time range forward or backward in time, or shrink or expand the time range. Display the report for which to view data. 2. Adjust the time range for which to display data by doing any of the following: Assign a preset time range a. Click any of the preset time ranges located at the top of the Timeline bar. b. Double-click the Time Line to apply the preset range. Move the time range forward or backward in time a. Drag the Time Line backward or forward. b. Double-click the Time Line to apply the new range. Shrink or expand the time range a. Drag the Right Handle and Left Handle to the desired time range. b. Double-click the Time Line to apply the new range. Click reset range on the Time Range bar to adjust the time range to display the most recent seven days of logging. Time Range Bar Use the Time Range bar to select the numeric base for the data on which to report, adjust the start and end times of the time range, assign a preset time range, or adjust the time range forward or backward in time. Display the report for which to view data. 2. In the Base drop-down list, select the numeric base for the data on which to report: 1000 Bytes/KBs Tape drives, tape cartridges, and disk drives report capacities in units of 1000 bytes per kilobyte. 27 Chapter 2: Navigation Working with DXi Advanced Reporting Time Ranges 1024 Bytes/KBs Backup applications typically report summaries in units of 1024 bytes per kilobyte. 3. Adjust the time range by doing any of the following: Adjust start and end times a. In the Start and End fields, enter a starting and ending date and time to define the time range to display. b. Click reload to redisplay the graphs with the new time range. Assign a preset time range Click any of the following Preset Time Range buttons to quickly display data for a different time range: 1h 1 hour 4h 4 hours 12h 12 hours 1d 1 day 1w 1 week 1m 1 month 1y 1 year Assign a preset zoom factor Click any of the following to zoom in or out on the graphs by a fixed factor: x0.25 Zooms in by a quarter of the currently displayed time range. x0.5 Zooms in by half of the currently displayed time range. x2.0 Zooms out by 2 times the currently displayed time range. x4.0 Zooms out by 4 times the currently displayed time range. Adjust the time range forward or backward Click the Backward or Forward Navigation buttons to move the time range by any of the following amounts: <<< or >>> Moves the time range backward or forward an amount equal to the current time range. << or >> Moves the time range backward or forward an amount equal to one half of the current time range. < or > Moves the time range backward or forward an amount equal to one quarter of the current time range. Click reset range to adjust the time range to display the most recent seven days of logging. Click Clear to reset the graph to its original time range. DXi Advanced Reporting Graph Features In DXi Advanced Reporting, each report is made up of one or more graphs. Each graph displays a specific type of performance data for the selected time range, such as the Data Volume Overview, Reduction Ratio, Fibre Channel Activity, and Ethernet Activity graphs in the Overview report. Although each graph in Advanced Reporting displays a specific type of performance data, many components are shared between Advanced Reporting graphs. Review the following to gain a better understanding of graph components both shared and unique. Horizontal Axis The horizontal axis of each graph represents time, and displays the selected time range. Vertical Axis The vertical axis can vary between graphs. Often the vertical axis represents capacity or data amount, or a calculated value such as ratio, average, or percentage. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 18

29 Chapter 2: Navigation DXi Advanced Reporting Graph Features Legend Each graph contains a color-coded legend. Use the legend to help in reading and interpreting the data displayed on the graph. For some graphs, the legend contains first, last, and delta values for variables within the graph. Values first last delta Descriptions The value of the variable at the start of the time range. The value of the variable at the end of the time range. The difference between the first and last values over the time range. Equation: last - first = delta Note: If a graph displays a value as nan not a number Advanced Reporting could not calculate the value. Gaps A white gap in a graph indicates an absence of data logging for a period of time. This absence can occur for the following reasons: A system reboot occurred. The system was busy. Logging was turned off. Zero Line Graphs include a zero line to show when data is being written to or read from the DXi system. Positive values above the zero line represent data being written to the system. Negative values below the zero line represent data being read from the system. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 19

Advanced Reporting uses two methods for placing multiple variables on the same graph. Layered Graphs Layered graphs compare related variables by superimposing data for two or more variables. Each variable is assigned a different color so you can easily distinguish between the variables. Example The Data Volume Overview graph depicts the data for the Before Reduction, After Reduction, and Unique Data variables using different colors. 31 Chapter 2: Navigation DXi Advanced Reporting Graph Features Stacked Graphs Stacked graphs display aggregate performance by adding the values for two or more variables to arrive at a total value. Each variable is assigned a different color so you can easily distinguish between the variables. Example The Fibre Channel Activity graph adds the values for each Fibre Channel port to reach a total value for each point in the time range. Each of the ports is assigned a different color so you can see the contribution it makes to the total value. To minimize a graph, click. To restore the graph to its full size, click the graph's minimized title bar (located near the bottom of the window). Export To export a JPG or PNG image of the graph, click. Show/Hide To display or hide a graph's title and legend, click. 32 Chapter 2: Navigation Tips for Interpreting Performance Data Tips for Interpreting Performance Data DXi Advanced Reporting allows you to compare different types of performance data for the same time range. This comparison lets you look for patterns and trends to determine relationships between events. Review the following tips to help you interpret performance data. Using the Time Sync to Correlate Information Across Graphs When you view a report, try to correlate information between the report's graphs. Remember that all graphs in a report display the same time range and always remain in sync. So an event that happens in the center of one graph can be correlated with an event that happens in the center of another. This time sync applies to graphs in the same report, as well as to graphs in different reports. In other words, if you can draw a straight vertical line between events in two graphs, the events happened at the same time. Figure 11: Time Sync Correlation Example While this correlation does not mean that one event caused the other, if you consistently see that events in one graph happen at the same time as events in another graph, there is a strong possibility that the two types of events are related. Understanding Time Resolution Advanced Reporting displays graphs with 960 data points (pixels) along the horizontal axis. Keep in mind, though, that the logging database usually contains more than 960 data points for the selected time range. To convert the resolution of the database to the resolution of the graph, Advanced Reporting uses aggregation. In many cases, each pixel in the graph is a combination or an aggregate of multiple data DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 22

Depending on how many data points are aggregated to create each pixel in the graph, the resulting value can change, as described below. Example Consider a transfer on the Ethernet Activity graph that lasts for 6 seconds. In Example 1 below, the graph shows the transfer within a time range of 32 minutes (1,920 seconds). In this case, each pixel in the graph represents 2 seconds of time. As a result, the transfer takes up 3 pixels in the graph (3 two-second intervals) and displays a peak amplitude of 2.1 MB/second. Figure 12: Example 1 In Example 2, the graph shows the transfer within a time range of 128 minutes (7,680 seconds). In this case, each pixel in the graph represents 8 seconds of time. Even though the transfer is only 6 seconds long, it cannot take up to less than 1 pixel in the graph. As a result, the transfer amount is averaged over 8 seconds, resulting in a lower peak amplitude of 0.9 MB/second. Figure 13: Example 2 It's important to note that the only difference between the two examples is the time resolution. The underlying data did not change. The difference in amplitude is due to the different number of data points that Advanced Reporting aggregates when calculating the value for each pixel in the graph. Be aware of this effect as you work with graphs and time ranges. Note: Advanced Reporting always uses the finest resolution of data available in the database, with finer-grained data being available for more recent time ranges. Example 27.3 tebibytes (TiB) reported at base 1024 become 30 TB when reported at base Advanced Reporting automatically selects the appropriate base unit for each DXi model so that numeric results most closely match the value displayed in the DXi remote management pages. In addition, this variable includes disk space that is free to be reclaimed for storing new backup data. The types of data for which disk space is allocated include the following: Deduplicated data Non-deduplicated data Expired data System metadata Use this information to see the amount of allocated and free system capacity. Disk Capacity (black) Displays the overall capacity of the system. Space Reclamation A pink bar at the top of the graph indicates that space reclamation is in progress. Space reclamation is source intensive and can affect the rate at which the system deduplicates data or performs namespace replication. Average Transfer Rate The average transfer rate, represented by a thin horizontal black line, displays the average data transfer rate for the selected time range. Reduction Ratio Graph The Reduction Ratio graph displays the data reduction factor for the DXi system. Use this graph to evaluate the effectiveness of data reduction. When viewing data on the Reduction Ratio graph, keep in mind that a higher reduction ratio indicates less space is being used to store the same amount of ingested data. Note: The reduction ratio may vary greatly during space reclamation and during incoming replications because these activities affect the Before Reduction amounts. DXi versions 2.3 and newer can automatically free reclaimable space for deduplicated data on shares and partitions within the blockpool. This process leaves the free space available for subsequent deduplicated data on shares and partitions within the blockpool. Before Reduction vs. After Reduction Graph The Before Reduction vs. After Reduction graph compares the amount of data ingested by the DXi system to the amount of unique and compressed data stored on the system. 58 CPU Load Report CPU Load Report The CPU Load report displays information about the usage of CPU resources for the DXi system. The report contains the following graphs: CPU Load Average Graph CPU Stats in % Graph CPU Load Average Graph The CPU Load Average graph displays the one-minute load average for the system. Use this graph to determine whether the system has adequate CPU resources. Review the following information for help in reading the graph. Figure 33: CPU Load Average Graph Load Average Shows the average number of processes running or waiting to run on a CPU over a one-minute period. A load average higher than the number of system CPU cores indicates that the system is CPU limited. Example A typical DXi system has 4 CPUs. For such systems, a load average of greater than 4 indicates that some processes waited for an available CPU before running. In contrast, a load average of less than 4 indicates that CPUs were immediately available for all processes to run. Note: A CPU load that is higher than 15 indicates that the system is busy. Use this graph to see how CPU resources are allocated among these categories. The CPU is handling an interrupt request related to I/O, such as network, Fibre Channel, disk, keyboard, or serial port activity. The CPU is handling a high-level I/O task, such as timer interrupts or packets in the TCP/IP stack. The CPU is handling a kernel process, such as filesystem operations related to the StorNext or blocklet filesystems. The CPU is handling processes that have lower priority, such as background processes. The CPU is handling processes that are not owned by the kernel, such as deduplication, space management, and replication activities. The CPU is not handling any of the other process categories. 63 OST Statistics Report DXi Accent DXi Accent software reduces network bandwidth requirements by distributing deduplication between the backup server and DXi systems. Only unique and compressed data is sent over the network. NetBackup Accelerator NetBackup Accelerator reduces network bandwidth requirements, while also reducing I/O at the DXi device. It achieves these reductions by identifying changed blocks of data on the client machine, and then sending only the changed data from the client to the system. The system then synthesizes the changed data with existing blocks of data. Note: NetBackup Accelerator is available for DXi versions 3.1 and higher. Workflow Review the following workflow to gain a better understand of how Netback Accelerator functions. a. The Accelerator Changed Block Tracking (CBT) agent exists on the client machine. It identifies and sends only the changed blocks of data as ingest data bytes to the system through the NetBackup Media Server. b. When a changed block of data arrives at the NetBackup Media Server, the Accelerator plugin creates an OST file from that block. The Netbackup Media server then sends the OST file as ingest data bytes to the system. c. The system reads synthetic data from its disk to be merged with the arriving ingest data bytes. Merging this data creates a synthesized image file. The system then further deduplicates the synthesized image file and writes only the changed data to the appropriate disk as unique data bytes. Ingest (Chargeback) Reports Ingest (Chargeback) reports provide an estimate of the amount of disk space that a source occupies on the DXi device. You can use this estimate to determine how much to charge a source for storage space during a specified time range. This chargeback estimate assumes that only one source occupies a partition or share on the device. Example You back up data for several customers. Instead of requiring the DXi device for each customer, you can assign separate partitions or shares on the device to each customer. You can then charge customers based on the amount of space they use within their assigned partitions or shares for a given period of time. Considerations When viewing chargeback data, keep the following in mind: Reporting Intervals Advanced Reporting reports chargeback in 1-minute or 5-minute intervals, causing the display to lag by DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 60

71 Ingest (Chargeback) Reports 1 or 5 minutes. Hold your cursor over the graph to see a tooltip describing how timing can impact data in the graph. In addition, if a replication starts and completes in a single reporting interval, ingest data is not displayed on the graph or legend. Rounding and Granularity Changes in rounding and granularity can cause small differences in the displayed values within the graphs and summaries, as well as in the comma separated values (CSV) file. Changing the amount of time that you are viewing could cause small differences in the graph summary values, as well. This behavior is normal. Maximum Number of Partitions or Shares Advanced Reporting accepts and retains values for 256 ingest partitions or shares, and ignores statistics for partitions or shares beyond this maximum. If this maximum is exceeded, Advanced Reporting displays a one-time per boot log message. Time Intervals We do not recommend using chargeback reporting for short time intervals. Because of the methods for estimating chargeback statistics, chargeback reporting yields the best results when the time span is greater than 7 days. Per Partition Ingest Report and Per Share Ingest Report The Per Partition Ingest report and Per Share Ingest report display the same ingest information, with the exception of the type of variable on which they are reporting either a partition or a share. A partition refers to a container of data on a device, and includes both VTL partitions and cartridge-based replication partitions. A share refers to a container of data on a device, and includes the following: o o o o o CIFS share NFS share OST (the container is the storage server) Directory/File-based replication target share Replication snapshots on a target These reports contain graphs that display both the total amounts of ingested data on a system, and the amounts of ingested data in individual partitions or shares. In addition, you can export a Chargeback Ingest comma separated value (CSV) file from the reports to view a breakdown of the report's statistics. Replication Ingest Report The Replication Ingest report displays the amounts of data coming into the system indirectly through DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 61

72 Ingest (Chargeback) Reports replication. This replication ingest data can include OST optimized duplication data. Chargeback for replication tracks the following amounts of data within a share or partition being replicated to the system: Ingested data Compressed data Deduplicated data Protected data This report contains graphs that display both the total amounts of ingested replicated data on the system, and the amounts of data in individual partitions or shares sent to the system for replication. In addition, you can export a Chargeback Ingest CSV file from the report to view a breakdown of the report's statistics. Note: The Replication Ingest report's graphs display the same interface and data sets as the Per Partition Ingest report and Per Share Ingest report. This naming convention is shown in the following example of a Chargeback Partition Ingest CSV file. Export a Chargeback Ingest CSV file 1. Depending on the type of file to export, do one of the following: From the Reports > Per Partition Ingest menu, select Export Partition Chargeback to download the CSV file. From the Reports > Per Share Ingest menu, select Export Share Chargeback to download the CSV file. From the Reports > Replication Ingest menu, select Export Replication Chargeback to download the CSV file. 2. In the File Received dialog box, click OK to save the CSV file. UserDataSizeAvg The sum of all observed UserDataSize values, divided by the number of observations for the selected time period. For Partition or Share Chargeback Ingest files The amount of user data stored in the partition or share at the end of the selected time period. This value represents the sum of the file sizes in the partition or share prior to data reduction. This value includes the size of the ingested replication copies. SumOf Observed UserDataSize Values SumOf UniqueBytesPreCompression Values Deduplication Ratio Considerations To gain a better understanding of the deduplication ratio, review the following: Statistical Accuracy The deduplication ratio per partition or share is based on the average total reduction of all data ingested during the selected time period against all data stored on the system. Because this ratio is an average, the accuracy increases as the period of time increases. The average is based on 1-minute time points throughout the time period. 1 hour contains 60 time points 1 day contains 1440 time points. Statistical accuracy becomes better when you have more time points. Blockpool Impacts If two partitions or shares have a large amount of similar data, the first partition or share to ingest the data will have a lower deduplication ratio because all deduplicated data resides in the same blockpool. Ingest and Delete Report The Ingest and Delete report displays information about the amount of unique data, after compression and deduplication, that is backed up to and deleted from the DXi system on an hourly, daily, and weekly basis. The report contains Ingest and Deletions graphs for the three time variables. Ingest and Deletions Graphs The Ingest and Deletions graphs display the amount of unique data after compression and deduplication being ingested and deleted from the DXi system. Use these graphs to determine whether the system is in a steady state. When the system is in a steady state, the amount of data being backed up to the system is balanced with the amount of data expiring on the system. Examples Non-Steady State When the system is new and expiration policies are not running on a regular basis, you will see more DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 69

81 Space Reclamation Report Space Reclamation Report The Space Reclamation report displays information about the overall progress of disk space reclamation activities. In addition, it provides details about the underlying data from which space is being reclaimed. Use this report to monitor the performance of space reclamation, as well as to identify issues with overlapping processes or performance issues in the RAID subsystem, such as with the file system or Fibre Channel path. The report contains the following graphs: Space Reclamation Progress Graph Space Reclamation Bytes Graph Space Reclamation/Compaction Graph Space Reclamation Progress Graph The Space Reclamation Progress graph displays the progress of the space reclamation stages. Use this graph to view the progress that has been made in reclaiming space on the DXi device. Review the following to gain a better understanding about space reclamation stages and progress. Figure 52: Space Reclamation Progress Graph Stages of Space Reclamation Space reclamation consists of the following stages. Stage 1: Compact Compaction is the process that reclaims disk space allocated to the device's blockpool. The Compact stage deletes data identified by tags with a reference count of zero. In this first Compact stage, the system deletes data that was tagged with a reference count of zero during a previous space reclamation. This stage allows you to do the following: a. Cancel a reclamation process to recover data that you do not want deleted. b. Delete data still tagged with a reference count of zero in a new reclamation process, without restarting the previous process. DXi Advanced Reporting User s Guide 71

82 Space Reclamation Report Stage 2: Reconcile The Reconcile stage collects a list of tags set to expire, along with the associated reference counts. Stage 3: Delete The Delete stage decrements the reference count of tags that have expired. Stage 4: Compact In the second Compact stage, the system deletes any tags with a reference count of zero in the current space reclamation process. gcstage x 10 (green) Represents the current stage of space reclamation activity. For readability purposes, the stage number is multiplied by 10 on the graph. Example the gcstage x 10 line plots at 20 along the y-axis to identify stage 2 (2 x 10 = 20). Progress (light blue) Indicates the percentage of space reclamation that is currently complete. Total Progress (dark blue) Indicates the space reclamation progress completed over time. Note: The Progress and Total Progress variables may never reach 100% because sampling is performed at specific intervals. When reclamation completes, no additional data is returned and Advanced Reporting cannot collect the 100% data point. Space Reclamation Bytes Graph The Space Reclamation Bytes graph displays details about the data that is being reduced and the space that is being reclaimed on the DXi system. For each cluster of data, the peak shows the amount of ingested data, and the decline of the cluster's values shows the amount of disk space that is reclaimed by data reduction. Disk Bytes to Reclaim (light green) Displays the actual space that is reclaimed during Stage 4 of space reclamation. For information about space reclamation stages, see Space Reclamation Progress Graph. Space Reclamation/Compaction Graph The Space Reclamation/Compaction graph displays the number of bytes freed by compaction, which is the process that reclaims disk space allocated to thedxi device's blockpool. Review the graph's variable below. Note: Compaction only runs when disk space is extremely low, and so there could be long periods when compaction is not run and data is not displayed as shown below.
