BK Connect Hardware Setup BK Connect Finite Element Interface Types 8400-D, E and F Import of finite element (FE) models can include, apart from geometry data and modal data, also reduced mass matrices (Nastran or Abaqus). This allows for animation of FE modes as well as correlation of finite element analysis (FEA) results with test results. FE models can be imported as UFF files or with the following options, from Nastran, Ansys or Abaqus: File import of Nastran FE models: Available with Nastran Interface Type 8400-D File import of Ansys FE models: Available with Ansys Interface Type 8400-E File import of Abaqus FE models: Available with Abaqus Interface Type 8400-F BK Connect Hardware Setup Application modules for graphics-based set-up of your data acquisition hardware Data review from previous testing Set up acquisition hardware Data recording Acquisition and data processing Processed data review and comparison Reporting Hardware Setup BK Connect Hardware Setup allows you to connect to a front end and prepare the physical set-up. You can use the Hardware Setup application stand-alone with your LAN-XI front-end system to quickly and easily assign all of your transducers via TEDS automatic detection or manual drag-and-drop. The HW Set-up Table provides a quick overview of the hardware configuration including signal names, DOF information, transducer calibration information and front-end settings. This is coupled with the Hardware Matrix which provides you with an interactive graphical display of the front end, including real-time display of the LAN-XI LED status rings, enabling you to understand the state of your instrumentation from inside the BK Connect user interface. Selections in the Hardware Matrix are instantly reflected in the HW Set-up Table, which makes it very easy to handle large channel counts as the channel table scales automatically to the selection in the matrix. The real-time monitors in BK Connect Hardware Setup include time, level, FFT spectrum, 1/3-octave spectrum, and FFT spectrogram displays and PC sound-card-based audio playback to give you confidence in your instrumentation set-up and ensure you are ready to start acquiring data. A start/stop recorder is included to provide a simple data acquisition option. You can also connect to a virtual front end based on a known hardware configuration. This enables you to prepare in advance for a test without having to connect to the physical front end and tie up test resources, which is especially useful when preparing for a large-scale test with many channels. Hardware Setup Base and Advanced Licences BK Connect Hardware Setup Type 8401 Type 8401 allows connection of up to two LAN-XI front-end modules or a single LAN-XI Light module. Two Type 8401 licenses can be stacked together to provide unlimited module access. Once connected: Create and manage transducers in the transducer database, including auxiliary transducers Assign transducers to front-end channels (assuming no TEDS) Perform transducer verification (calibration) Real-time monitor displays Simple start/stop recording to a bkc file 5

You can manage the set-up using the real-time monitor display, which provides instant and continuous visual feedback on signals coming in to the front end. The displays start immediately upon connecting to the front end, so no initialization is needed and start-up is extremely fast. Fig. 4 Hardware Setup BK Connect Hardware Setup (advanced) Type 8401-A BK Connect Hardware Setup (advanced) Type 8401-A adds the ability to measure with an unlimited number of LAN-XI modules, as well as one-button accelerometer mounting check to check the mounted resonance state of your accelerometers *. This is an invaluable aid, especially in high-channel count tests, to ensure that all accelerometers remain firmly mounted to the test structure throughout the test process. You can also perform a detailed verification of the performance of your LAN-XI hardware modules using the Module Verification tool. The tool checks that the electrical noise, distortion, input range levels and the high pass filter setting of the modules are still within the manufacture s specification, eliminating a source of uncertainty in your measurement chain. Fig. 5 Hardware Setup (advanced) showing recording in the Monitor * Requires accelerometers which support the accelerometer mounting check function. 6

BK Connect Time Data Recorder Virtual Hardware Setup (free of charge) BK Connect Virtual Hardware Setup Type 8401-V is a free licence that lets you use any physical front-end configuration that has been saved as a virtual front end. The file can be used to assign transducers and configure the hardware set-up table as if you were using the actual physical hardware, thus allowing you to set up your test at your desk rather than in the lab or out in the field. BK Connect Time Data Recorder Application modules for recording time data in the field or lab for immediate or later processing Data review from previous testing Set up acquisition hardware Data recording Acquisition and data processing Processed data review and comparison Reporting Time Data Recorder BK Connect Time Data Recorder is designed for fast, efficient, flexible recording. Start and stop manually with a click of a button, or set up signal or speed triggers for automated recordings. Time Data Recorder is closely linked with the real-time monitor displays ensuring that no event goes unnoticed whilst recording is in progress. Both Data Viewer Type 8400 and Hardware Setup Type 8401 are required to use Time Data Recorder. Time Data Recorder Base and Advanced Licences BK Connect Time Data Recorder Type 8402 When used as a stand-alone application, Time Data Recorder provides fast and efficient recording with post-recording verification. When used inside the Data Processing application, it becomes part of a sophisticated recording, measurement and post-processing workflow. Type 8402 provides a number of time data recording tools and features: Flexible triggers allowing different options for triggered start and stop of a recording ideal for set up & leave scenarios Trigger delay or pre-delay gives the flexibility to record unpredictable transient events Two recording modes: Multiple mode enables a fixed number of sub-recordings to be made in a single recording process Circular mode enables a fixed number of sub-recordings to be continuously updated so you can record for a fixed period of time and stop on a signal trigger event, for example recording what happens before an unpredictable event Markers allow you to indicate events during recording that can later be used as an aid to post-processing. These markers can be edited in the Time Review task (available with Type 8402-A) One-touch operation via hot keys for use when normal operation is difficult, for example, in a moving vehicle A documented API for external applications, or smart device apps, to control key functions and obtain status information Metadata definitions and event markers are saved in the recording file for use during post-processing and reporting 7

Fig. 6 Time Data Recorder BK Connect Time Data Recorder (advanced) Type 8402-A BK Connect Time Data Recorder (advanced) Type 8402-A adds a Time Data Review analysis task with which you can check the quality of your recordings by playing them back, listening to individual channels, and trimming them to remove unwanted data. You can also edit the metadata or markers, if needed, so that the recordings are fully prepared and error free, for later post-processing. 9 BK Connect Data Processing BK Connect Data Processing Application modules for comprehensive testing from real-time measurements to post-processing Data review from previous testing Set up acquisition hardware Data recording Acquisition and data processing Processed data review and comparison Reporting Data Processing BK Connect Data Processing brings together a comprehensive set of signal analysis tools for postprocessing sound and vibration data. Central to data processing is the process chain a graphical tool for setting up the analysis process using individual, separately configurable elements for filtering, analysis, display and storage of results. A chain is made up of selected elements to form a complete analysis process. You can run analysis on one or multiple data sets or save the chain for later re-use. On its own, the Data Processing application is only for post-processing time or function data. With the addition of Hardware Setup and Time Recorder licences, the application expands to include real-time spectral measurements and recording. The Data Processing application s unique capability to integrate with the other core applications as well as BK Connect Geometry Type 8410 (for geometry-guided measurements) and BK Connect Structural Measurements Hammer and Shaker Type 8411, makes it a complete yet flexible solution. You can configure the user interface, properties and tasks to suit your needs or mode of working, then save the workflow as a template. The addition of Types 8410 and 8410-B, with the proper analysis results, will allow you to animate the spectral calculations and measured time producing operational deflection shape (ODS) results. Data Processing Base and Advanced Licences as Stand-alone Solutions There are two base licenses: Data Processing Type 8403 provides a simplified, template-driven mode of operation. It is a basic application intended for those who need standard time data processing and/or measurement with a simple click-and-go interface Data Processing Specialist Type 8404 provides a fully customizable, expert mode of operation. It is intended for advanced users who need the flexibility of determining all the functions and parameters of their test set-up Types 8403 and 8404 contain the same basic set of signal processing functions, including time domain filters, FFT analysis and overall analysis, which means the analysis functionality is identical. You can also add the same analysis options (Types 8405-B, C, D, E, F and G) to the base licences. By adding the advanced module, Type 8404-A, to Type 8404, you add the features of Type 8403 allowing you to validate any templates you create before they are used in Type

Fig. 8 The basic components of BK Connect Data Processing BK Connect Data Processing Type 8403 Type 8403 contains the following features: Standard Processing Setup task View the predefined process chains and adjust available parameters Standard Processing task Perform automated, batch processing of data: Any data in the active set-up is run through one or more predefined process chains in different set-ups Time data analysis: FFT, FFT vs time, overall, overall vs time, and tachometer (rpm or speed) vs time Pre-processing elements: Weighting, filtering, integration, etc. Standard Measurements task: Perform real-time spectral measurements (with the appropriate Hardware Setup licence for front end connection). Set up triggering, bandwidth, resolution, number of averages, selection of reference signals, and output function types. You can validate the set-up using the real-time monitors. Results are automatically sent to the Standard Processing task Immediate display and storage of analysis results Automated reporting Fig. 9 Data Source Management and Done Management tools allow you to automate your workflow. If Done Management has been defined in a task, you can simply click the check mark to go directly to the next step in the workflow With Type 8403 you can run a predefined template, then import data, adjust the analysis parameters as necessary and process with a single click perfect for repetitive testing. 10

BK Connect Data Processing Specialist Type 8404 Type 8404 has the following features: Time Data Processing task which provides the same pre-processing and analysis elements that are available in Type 8403, but allows you to create a process chain as needed and save process chains for reuse. In addition, the task includes the Time Editor for fast, efficient display and audio playback of time data, intelligent selection of signal groups and time ranges (regions), spectrogram display and interactive filters Function Data Processing task for post-processing and performing calculations on spectra via a process chain Automatic display and storage of analysis results Automated reporting Fig. 10 The Microsoft PowerPoint layout templates available in the Reporting task Process chains are highly versatile as they allow for multiple parallel analyses in one run, for example, analysing vibration data at a different bandwidth than your acoustic data. Individual process chains can be stored for later use, which means that there is no need to repeat the set-up after the first time simply drag-and-drop a previously stored chain into the Data Processing pane. It is also possible to attach a number of regions to a chain and run the analysis in batch mode, thus analysing multiple input regions in one operation. Unlike Type 8403, Type 8404 gives you the freedom to adapt the analysis to the test scenario by interactively selecting the process elements in your process chain. You can preview the time data in the Time Editor and select regions of interest to post-process. Using BK Connect s favourites concept, you can decide which features are visible in a saved template. This includes the properties of each process chain element. For example, you can pre-define a set of properties then hide them so that the template user need only define specific parameters, while others are set beforehand. You can define the workflow, setting where the template navigates to once a task is completed, and include notes to guide and inform the user about each task. Like Type 8403, you can view results and generate reports quickly and easily. 11

Fig. 11 Type 8404 using favourites to hide parameters in a template for use in Type 8403 BK Connect Data Processing Specialist (advanced) Type 8404-A BK Connect Data Processing Specialist (advanced) Type 8404-A adds the Standard Measurements and Standard Processing tasks to Type 8404 allowing the expert user a simplified workflow when under time pressure, or enabling a set-up to be validated for later use in Type Data Processing Base and Advanced Licences as an Integrated Team Solution The Data Processing application is specially designed as a completely integrated solution for teams providing targeted usability for each standard profile in an acoustic and/or vibration test team: for example, the test manager, specialist, test engineer and operator. For Test Engineers and Operators: BK Connect Data Processing Type 8403 Types 8403 and 8404 have similar tools for measurement, data processing, display and reporting, however, Type 8403 is designed for use with templates containing ready-made set-ups and workflow. This is perfect if your only task is to run a simple process: a predefined measurement or recording, data processing with fixed analysis settings, or repetitive recording and analysis. Type 8403 users cannot create templates or process chains, therefore they must run with a configured template containing at least one set-up for hardware and analysis. The template and predefined set-up is made using Type 8404 and, depending on the intentions of the template designer, you may be allowed the flexibility to adjust many processing parameters, or restricted to a few or no editable parameters. In the most extreme operator scenario, the channel settings and analysis parameters may be completely locked and invisible leaving you to concentrate solely on controlling the physical test set-up, operating parameters and measurements. For Specialists: BK Connect Data Processing Specialist Type 8404 To edit and configure a Type 8403 interface, you will need to use a Type 8404 licence. With Type 8404, you can determine which tasks are included and which, if any, analysis parameters can be seen and edited. A template can contain a number of different tests and set-ups, each with its own step-by-step workflow, so it can encompass an entire test programme if needed. You can customize the workflow, for example, by: Defining the task in which to start Defining which task comes next when the current task has been completed using Done Management Defining which features are visible to the operator based on the favourites concept Defining which of the set-up parameters can be edited Including notes, diagrams and photographs to guide the operator through each step of the workflow Defining the displays to be viewed for result validation and the displays to be populated to the report using the Results Selector. These two distinct tasks may contain different displays 12

In a multi-user test scenario, typically only one Type 8404 licence (installed on the specialist or test designer's PC) is needed for a group of Type 8403 users (the operators or technicians). For Specialists: BK Connect Data Processing Specialist (advanced) Type 8404-A A Type 8404-A licence allows you to validate the measurement and processing templates that you have created for Type 8403 users. It is useful in ensuring that the correct user interface, parameters and workflow are presented when running in Type 8403 s automated mode without you having a Type 8403 licence. Data Processing Options with Type 8405 To Types 8403 and 8404 you can add the following options: Type 8405-B: Advanced frequency analysis including envelope and demodulation analysis, time correlation analysis and IIR filtering Type 8405-C: CPB (1/n-octave) analysis according to IEC, DIN and ANSI standards Type 8405-D: Process chain calculations Type 8405-E: RPM-based processing and order analysis using fixed bandwidth FFT Type 8405-F: Tracked FFT and order analysis Type 8405-G: Calculation of sound quality metrics Advanced Frequency Analysis with Type 8405-B Type 8405-B adds Envelope, Demodulation and Time Correlation Analysis to the list of available process chain elements. Envelope analysis is a means for understanding the amplitude modulation of machine vibration, most often used to diagnose fault modes in bearings and gear trains. Time correlation analysis enables you to find repeated patterns between signals in the time domain, for example when a sound takes more than one path to reach the receiver. The Demodulator element is for amplitude or phase demodulation of signals based on a given reference (modulation) frequency. Amplitude demodulation is part of the process for envelope analysis and separating it from the FFT analysis enables greater flexibility of analysis when deciding how to process the output demodulated signal. Phase demodulation enables you to study frequency perturbations of a given reference frequency; for example, the fundamental frequency of a rotating shaft where the perturbations represent angular (or torsional) vibration superimposed on the carrier rotating frequency. Also included is a pre-analysis element for time domain-based Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filtering, including low-pass, high-pass and combined low- and high-pass filters with control of filter order and filter design options of Butterworth or Chebyshev. Standardized CPB Option with Type 8405-C Conforming to IEC, DIN and ANSI standards, Type 8405-C provides 1/ 1-, 1/ 3-, 1/ 6-, 1/ 12- and 1/ 24-octave analysis with digital filters and simultaneous calculation of overall level, both weighted and unweighted. Acoustic weighting can be applied to the spectrum itself and min./max. holds on individual, single, overall, or overall weighted bands. 13

Fig. 12 CPB (here 1/3-octave) analysis follows the same simple workflow as FFT, order and overall analysis. The displays show A-weighted 1/3-octave vs time (left) and the 125 Hz band level vs time overlaid on total level. The cursors are synchronized between the displays The CPB option adds two process chain elements: CPB CPB vs time Calculations in the Process Chain with Type 8405-D Type 8405-D adds advanced calculation functionality including: Calculation elements in the process chain for function statistics, function operators, scaling with unit conversion, frequency weighting, complex math, statistics and function smoothing. These elements can be included in time data processing and function data processing Batch Statistics element in the process chain allowing function statistics min., max. and mean to be calculated on results from different time input regions and, optionally, based on selected metadata, enabling recordings from different tests to be processed simultaneously in one process chain Fig. 13 Calculation sequences can be included in the Process Chain with Type 8405-D. In this example, a vibration dose value (VDV) calculation, including human vibration weighting, is performed on acceleration time data Order Analysis with Type 8405-E Type 8405-E adds fixed bandwidth FFT-based order analysis to Type 8403/8404. When a tachometer pulse train is available, the analysis can be set up to include rpm as a time-varying tag to 3D spectral maps. As an alternative to rpm, the tachometer conditions and profile can be defined with position (unit: m), speed (m/s) or vehicle speed (km/h) (ft, ft/s or mph for imperial units). 14

Fig. 14 In this run-up example, the focus is on the fourth order level, in each ear, of the recorded binaural sound With Type 8405-E, these additional elements are available in the process chain: FFT signal vs rpm and FFT system vs rpm Order extraction (order slices extracted from spectra) CPB vs rpm Overall vs rpm Additional Time Editor features include: Tachometer pulse train synthesis from speed profiles, for example from CAN data, voltage-proportionalto-speed conditioning equipment, or the graphical auto-tracker Tachometer repair: Smoothing and correction for pulse drop-out or multiple pulses Additional analysis tasks are available for graphical (interactive) order slice extraction and auto-tracking to generate an rpm profile from FFT vs time outputs. An auto-tracked speed profile can then be converted to a tachometer pulse train using the synthesis utility. Fig. 15 In this example, a distinct tone/whine is heard during the run down and is picked up in one of the acceleration signals. The spectrogram focuses on the order of interest, a zoom order analysis is performed, and the tracked order is displayed against total level. The entire workflow is visible in a single view Order Tracking with Type 8405-F Type 8405-F adds tracked resampling to basic Type 8403/8404: Streamed data is resampled according to the instantaneous rpm value from a given tachometer signal. 15

Tracked order analysis is recommended for high accuracy analyses of high order numbers occurring in rotating machinery equipment such as gearboxes, transfer boxes, differentials, power trains, turbines and aircraft engines. With Type 8405-F, these additional elements are available in the process chain: Order spectrum Order spectrum vs time Order spectrum vs rpm Order extraction (order slices extracted from order spectra) Additional Time Editor features include (same as Type 8405-E): Tachometer pulse train synthesis from speed profiles, for example from CAN data, voltage-proportionalto-speed conditioning equipment, or the graphical auto-tracker Tachometer repair: Smoothing and correction for pulse drop-out or multiple pulses Fig. 16 Sound quality metrics are integrated into the same processing framework as all other analysis types in BK Connect Data Processing Sound Quality (SQ) Metrics with Type 8405-G Type 8405-G adds sound quality metric calculations. Two specialized process chain elements enable the calculation of metrics as either overall values/spectra or as values/spectra versus time. The following sound quality metrics are included: Articulation Index (AI) Stationary Loudness Time-varying Loudness Statistical Loudness Loudness Level Binaural Loudness Sharpness Fluctuation Strength Roughness Tone-to-Noise Ratio Prominence Ratio Tonality The latest ISO Loudness standard, parts 1 and 2, is supported in addition to past standards. Through TEDS detection, Brüel & Kjær s binaural microphone pairs can easily be configured to include the appropriate head-related transfer function, allowing the SQ Metrics to be more easily calculated. 16

If IEEE capable transducers (with standardized TEDS) are being used, these are detected and attached automatically to the correct input channels HARDWARE BROWSER The Hardware Browser combines an interactive display of the frontend hardware, called the Hardware Matrix, and a channel list called the HW Setup Table. These two components, working together, provide a highly efficient way to work with any size system Header bar buttons in the Hardware Browser allow for: Resetting of channel status Reconnecting the front end Display of either the HW Setup Table, the LAN-XI home page, or an overall level meter for all channels HARDWARE MATRIX The Hardware Matrix has the following functionality: Signal levels indicated using coloured rings Channel overload status, using different symbols for different types of overload Transducer status, using symbols to identify each transducer type Calibration/verification status when used in the Transducer Verification task Drop destination for transducers dragged from the Transducer Manager Channel selector for the HW Setup Table and overall level meter Automatic indication of TEDS transducers Available Matrix Display Styles: Physical: A visually representative display of the physical front-end hardware Logical: Channels shown as coloured rings in the same configuration as the physical hardware HW SETUP TABLE The HW Setup Table contains all information about the front-end hardware and any transducers connected to it. The number of rows displayed in the table depends on the channel selection made in the Hardware Matrix, the default being all channels. The size of the table updates dynamically according to which channels are selected in the Hardware Matrix, making it very easy to focus on subsets of channels when needed Editing the Table: Manual editing of channel information Update from an external XML or UFF 1808 (Channel Table) file or from Microsoft Excel Save HW Setup Table contents to an external XML or UFF 1808 (Channel Table) file for later use Create different (favourite) views to tailor which columns should be shown TRANSDUCER MANAGER The Transducer Manager works with a Microsoft Access database (as used by PULSE LabShop) to manage transducer specifications and calibration information. A full set of Brüel & Kjær transducer types, with nominal sensitivities, is provided with all BK Connect installations, but more can be added using the Transducer Manager. Each transducer type can have a number of devices of that type, each with its own unique calibration history Adding Transducers: Individual devices, or groups of devices, can be dragged and dropped onto the Hardware Matrix to add transducers to the configuration and/or add calibration/sensitivity information: Drag a transducer type to many (or all) channels. The HW Setup Table applies the nominal sensitivity for that type to the selected channel(s) 20
