Digital Core Databases Data Collaboration, Integration and Re-Interpretation: A CASE STUDY Presenter: Darryl Soderberg (Project Manager/Geologist)

Digital Core Databases Data Collaboration, Integration and Re-Interpretation: A Case Study Digitize and Update the data for 300+ Syncrude wells cored between Digitization of Legacy Hard Copy Data. 2. Combining of both digital and hard copy data in a usable format. 3. Integration of various types of data (lab reports, wireline logs, images, geological reports). 4. Re-Interpretation and Evaluation of both existing and new data.

Evolution of Digital Data Hardcopy Data - Paper Geophysical logs - Core images - Geological reports - Field Reports Need for more user friendly data (digital logs, images, lab reporting) - Digital Data made available to anyone anytime - Importable into a multitude of programs, scalable, transferable, and easy to dissect - Storage (Where? How do I find my data? Easily Accessible In One Location!

Evolution of Digital Data Integrated Approach - All in one software - Contain all of my digital data core well files core logging data panels - 24/7 accessible - Integrated Design - Ability to Manipulate / Modify the data - Customizable Exports

Data Integration and Quality Control 1. Combining the Depth Corrected Core images with the Associated Geological Data

Data Integration 1. Combining the Geological Data, Stacked Core image and Associated Analytical Data.

Data Integration 1. Combining the Analytical Data with the Core Images

Does the data make sense?? Data Modification/Re-Interpretation 1. Do the contacts/boundary markers identified on the core photos match the corresponding geophysical log cures? 2. Does the resulting analytical data match the core images and corresponding geophysical log curves? 3. Do the facies/lithological units correspond to the core images? 4. Is there relevant data missing from the original geological interpretation? 5. Can I provide additional information regarding the geological interpretation of each well?

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Data Quality Control Depth Correction Do the original lithological contacts match the log traces? Points of Contention: 1. Inaccurate Depth Correction 2. Issues with the Core Image Layout 3. Concerns with the Wireline Logs (source data)

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Data Quality Control Depth Correction Do the original lithological contacts match the log traces? Conclusions: 1. Original Depths off by as much as 2.0m in some areas 2. Different Methodologies used for Depth Correction (set at Ground Level/Kelly Bushing) 3. Core Images (in their current positions do not match)

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Data Quality Control Depth Correction Overall of Implications of Modified Depth Correction 1. Adjust the core depths: re-interpretation of the well 2. Re-evaluate Formation Tops 3. Re-evaluate Top/Base of Pay 4. Re-evaluate Pay Thickness

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Data Quality Control Analytical Results Do the analytical results correspond with the core images and geophysical logs? 1. Thorough Evaluation of the Analytical Data 2. Direct Comparison of Analytical Data with Core Images 3. Compare an Image Grade Calculation against the Original Analytical Data Data Controls: 1. Resulting Analytical Data Remained Fixed 2. Any material sampled could not be modified or removed.

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Original Data: (Direct Comparison of Analytical Data with the Core Images)

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Original Data: (Direct Comparison of Analytical Data with the Core Images) Original Data: How does this data compare with the log response?

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Original Core Images: (Direct Comparison of Analytical Data with the Core Images) Flipped Core Box Modified Core Images: Change the orientation of the core to better match the resulting data.

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Original Analytical Data: Bitumen Saturation Calculated Image Grade Data: Bitumen Saturation Direct Comparison of Original Saturation Data vs. Calculated Image Grade Data

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Geological Interpretation 1. Is there relevant data missing from the original interpretation? 2. Is there other information I can add to the overall geological interpretation?

Data Modification/Re-Interpretation Geological Interpretation Complete Package 1. Facies/Lithological data 2. Sedimentary Structures/Rock Accessories/Trace Fossils 3. Image Grade Interpretation 4. Geotechnical Flags 5. Indurations 6. Geological Descriptions
