2 YesSQL? YesSQL! SQL's not a software fad, it's a fundamental way of working with data NoSQL is a fine technology, with a lousy name. Reflects an unfortunate trend in some communities to reject SQL and PL/SQL and instead use the database as a "dumb" data store. SQL is an amazing technology, with an OK name. It's time to remind ourselves of the importance of these technologies, the people who build them, and the people who use them. And since humans love to tell (and listen to) stories, we've invited Tom Kyte to reflect on the NoSQL -> SQL -> Not Only SQL -> SQL cycle 2

3 What's is SQL? SQL = Structured Query Language. Better name: Relational Data Language. Oh well... SQL is set-oriented. SQL makes it easy for us to organize and manipulate data in ways that are very close to how we think about data. SQL is declarative. You don't write a program. You tell the SQL engine the set of data you need or need to change. The engine figures out the best way to get the job done. 3

4 What's so amazing about SQL? It's incredibly liberating! Greatly improved productivity, much higher reliability, fantastic performance (if you are using the right engine). It is one of the foundation technologies upon which the Information, Internet, Mobile and (soon) Internet of Things Eras. Look inside almost any and every mission critical application around the world, and at its center you'll find a SQL database most likely one offered by Oracle. It's not "old stuff". It's "forever stuff". It was groundbreaking and revolutionary decades ago. 5 It's hard to get away from SQL.the complexity of dealing with a non-acid data store in every part of our business logic would be too great, and there was simply no way our business could function without SQL queries. 9 Why is SQL so hard to get rid of? I confess: I am a materialist. I accept and take joy in the world as it is. And the way I take joy is by ingesting lots of "data" (the inputs from my senses), identifying patterns, and either acting on or simply appreciating those patterns. Computers do the same, except that we have to feed the data to them. Data is "nothing more" than information collected through measurement and study. Data doesn't "do" anything. Data "is". 9

10 Software and Data Software is used, generally, to get data to and from users, so that users can act on the world in some way with that data. Most software is algorithmic: step by step procedures for implementing interfaces, rules, processes. Most software works with data at one point of another. But data is independent of algorithms and quite different in nature. Warning: relatively uninformed philosophy and cognitive science references to follow. 10

11 Is Data Platonic? Object Orientation is one approach to "mapping" and working with data. But that seems to reflect the Platonic Ideal: there is one "perfect" class, and everything is an instance or sub-class of it. I don't think that's how humans see the world. Human brains (and likely all other brains as well) work with patterns. When I see a tree, I don't say to myself: "There's a variation on the ideal tree." Instead, I recognize it as a "tree" because it shares a number of characteristics common to all or most trees. 12 Data and Algorithms Given that data exists independently of algorithms, there's no reason to think that algorithmic coding is particularly effective at working with data. In fact, there's every reason to think that it would make sense to have a language specifically suited to accessing and manipulating data. And a language that is set-oriented would seem to be the best fit. And that leads us straight (in 2015, back) to SQL. 12
