2 Creating Montgomery College s New Identity Officially launched in March 2012, Montgomery College s new brand identity unifies and embodies the spirit of our institution. It distinguishs our College from area community colleges and universities. Why are identity standards important? Consistency is critical to brand success. The Montgomery College brand should be communicated consistently through every touch point such as advertising, publications and collateral materials, social media, the website, clothing, and facilities. Regardless of how the target audience interacts with the brand, they should come away with the same impression. Using this Graphic Standards Style Guide The Montgomery College Identity Standards and College Style Guide manual establishes official policy and standards for the design and text of Montgomery College publications, stationery, signage, and other applications, including the web. Adhering to these standards will help ensure that communications from every department, and office speak with a clear and consistent voice that best represents the brand of Montgomery College. It is important that Montgomery College project an image of a vibrant, cohesive, excellent community college to all of our audiences. This guide establishes consistent visual and editorial policies and covers many applications of the visual identity system, including proper usage of the official Montgomery College logo. 1
3 The Office of Communications The Office of Communications is the College s resource for communications needs, from creative strategies and brainstorming to writing, editing, art directing, printing, marketing, photography, media relations, and e-communications. They offices ensure that all college publications, advertising, displays, banners, press releases, and websites meet the college s visual standards and editorial style by either producing the work internally or approving before it is produced. 4 About Our Name Our official name is Montgomery College. Montgomery College is used in news releases, feature articles, and publications and on the Web. Never use Montgomery Junior College or MJC. MC is acceptable after a first reference to Montgomery College, but it should not be used repeatedly or solely. Do not use Mont. College. Primary Logo The logo without tagline consists of two parts: the M symbol and the logotype in a horizontal configuration. The name Montgomery College appears in a customized Berthold Imago Medium typeface. The logotype baseline should be aligned to the bottom of the M symbol. Primary Logo with Tagline The logo with the tagline consists of three parts: the M symbol, the name Montgomery College in a customized Berthold Imago Medium, and the tagline endless possibilities in a customized ITC Eras Bold. Primary Logo Tagline Protected Area Shown Spacing should buffer all sides of the logo. Proportions Maintain the exact spatial relationship when scaling the logo electronically. Exercise caution to preserve accurate detail when reversing or printing smaller versions of the logo. Protected Area A protected area, as represented above, surrounds all versions of the logo. However, the logo may overprint or be reversed out of areas of color as long as the background does not render the logo difficult to distinguish or interfere with its detail. Size Recommendations The logo is intended as a visual identifier, not a title block, and should be scaled as such. In general publication usage, the logo should appear no smaller than 2 inches. The preferred size for the logo is 2.5 inches or wider. These sizes allow for accurate reproduction. 3
5 Electronic Formats The Montgomery College logos, as shown below, are available at the Creative Services web page, or via at montgomerycollege.edu or The logo with the words endless possibilities is selectively used for marketing materials such as ads, signage, and College publications. Available in.pdf and.jpg formats, the logos can be imported into a variety of software programs including, Word, PageMaker, Publisher, or PowerPoint. To use a logo in Word documents, right-click the logo and select Copy. Paste it directly into the new Word file. For easy future access, save it to your hard drive in the desired directory, using a file name that will allow you to identify it easily. Resizing the MC Logo Do not distort the logo while resizing. To maintain the correct proportions, hold down the shift key and drag the corner handles only to resize the logo in a Word document. Do not drag from the middle handles or you will stretch and distort the logo. Do not change or substitute fonts. Use only the logos found on the creative services website to preserve the graphic identity and consistency of the MC logo collegewide. Correct Logo Use Improper Logo Use 4
6 Primary Logo with College Department Name A byline can be added to the primary logo for a college department. The byline is placed below the logotype (aligned to M in Montgomery College). The College Department font should be used, ITC Franklin Gothic Medium. Primary Logo Department Name Official College Color Usage The official Montgomery College colors are PMS 2617 (Purple), PMS 423 (Gray), PMS Black (Black) and White. The use of color creates a visual impact that reinforces the college identity. Four-Color Process The preferred version of the college logo includes the M symbol and logotype in PMS Black. Taglines or bylines may be black or one of the other college colors. One-Color Printing When two-color or four-color process reproduction is not an option, solid black logos are acceptable. Only in one-color printing may the logo appear in other colors. It is recommended, however, that the logo be reversed in these instances. Bylines and taglines may printed in a 60% screen of black to indicate color variation. 5
7 Printing on Color Backgrounds When printing the logo on light backgrounds, use the primary logo. When reproducing on a darker background, use a reversed, white version of the logo. Pantone Matching System, RGB, and Web Hex Equivalents Exact Color Matching Note that the Pantone Matching System (PMS) is designed for printing inks. Screen-printing inks and textile, paint, and plastic colors may not accurately match Montgomery College s logo colors. Obtain color samples for customer approval prior to production of items when using these materials. Web Color Usage We have established Web color standards to follow as listed in this guide. 6
