The user interface layout (dark background colors and light font colors) of Independence Live is extremely useful for the typical environment on rather dark stages. You can load an unlimited number of Independence Projects AND 3rd party VST effects & VST instruments into the project channel part of an Independence Live session and simply switch between these Projects in real-time - with the program change option even without using your computer keyboard or mouse! Additionally you can edit your Independence Projects even directly in Independence Live at any time: The bottom part of the user interface will switch to the Independence 2 software so you can immediately adjust and edit your instruments. 4 Custom Remote Control: The Custom Remote Control area of the Quick Edit page lets you assign any Independence 2 parameter directly to one of the 8 freely assignable custom remote knobs or buttons: Pro Surround Environment: Independence 2 comes with the most sophisticated Surround Environment you will ever find in any software sampler and supports all professional surround formats, like Pro Logic, Dolby Surround, Dolby Digital, DTS, ITU, SDDS and many more up to 8.1. Of course all insert filter and effects of Independence 2 are fully surround compatible. Worldwide unique in Indepedence 2 is the total flexibility of all the formats: You can immediately switch between all the available surround formats and Independence 2 will automatically route the channels to the assignment of the new format. Additonally you can assign the surround formats for each Layer individually, so Independence 2 can manage different surround formats at the same time. There is also a custom learn option for any Independence 2 parameter, so you just have to select this option for the parameter you want to assign to one of the custom control knobs or buttons. To finish the assignment you only have to click on the knob or button you want to use for the manipulation of the selected parameter. Beside that general assignment of parameters to the remote control knobs and buttons you can additionally set a minimum and maximum automation value for each parameter you assigned to a knob. This means that you can use the full range (0% to 100%) of the remote control knob only for a specified value range of the assigned parameter. You can even use the remote control buttons to create a start note that triggers one of the MIDI modules of Independence 2, like Arranger, Step Sequencer, Arpeggiator, etc. - so you can simply start and stop these modules the easiest way possible. You can use your sustain pedal, for example, to start or stop the playback of a Step Sequencer! Additionally - to keep the overview - you can select up to 8 different colors for the knobs and buttons. This way you can create groups of parameters that belong together which is very useful especially during live performances! Of course all insert filter and effects of Independence 2 are fully surround compatible. Additonally you can assign the surround formats for each Layer individually, so Independence can manage different surround formats at the same time. Surround Insert Filters & Effects: This helper automatically shows all available channels of the currently selected surround format - in the following screen the format is ITU 5.0. The Channel Manager display will always show the currently selected surround format - so if you change your format in the Layer menu, also the Channel Manager display will switch accordingly. Additionally you can also route any channel of your surround format to L (left) and R (right) and thus create a mix down of your surround format to stereo. Use the Channel Manager to finetune the volume, delay and output channels of your surround format: In Independence all insert filters and effects are fully surround compatible - so even their channel assignment switches automatically whenever you may assign any format changes. If you select a 7.0 format, your channel assignment in the Channel Manager and the Delay insert will look like this: On the Preferences page of Independence 2 you can assign the preferences for the import settings of your surround files and you have the option to set the general channel assignment for all multi channel files for three different formats: If you assign another surround format to the selected Layer - like the channels will switch automatically to the new format: Of course you can even edit the output channel assignment of your currently selected format also afterwards at any time! 10 11

7 INDEPENDENCE 2 - QUICK EDIT: For fastest access to the premium instruments of Independence 2 you can use the Quick Edit page - we also call it composer page because it offers nearly everything composers always need immediately under their fingers :-). You only have to load the instrument you want to play in a Layer - that s it! The Quick Edit page covers anything you need for immediate high quality performance right out of the box. Quick Edit Page: The Quick Edit page covers the most common features you may want to use to assign your preferred taste to your instruments. Beside the basic parameters volume, panorama and pitch you can also adjust the EQ color for the currently selected Layer. Additionally you can add some custom filter and/or effect settings with a few simple clicks - even just browsing through all the included presets will definitely inspire you and gives you the possibility to easily customize your instruments the way you want. Additionally - to keep the overview - you can select up to 8 different colors for the knobs and buttons. This way you can create groups of parameters that belong together which is very useful especially during live performances! Activating the powerful host and MIDI automation options for the custom remote control, you can finally use any external hardware controller with Independence 2. Filter: The Filter Section of the Quick Edit page contains 15 different filter types, available in the five categories 2-pole 12dB, 4-pole 24dB, 6-pole 36dB, 10-pole 60dB and 12-pole 72dB - each with lowpass, hipass and bandpass. With the parameters frequency and resonance you can finetune your selected filter type. You can also save your settings in custom presets so they will be available for you afterwards at any time. Custom Remote Control: The Custom Remote Control area of the Quick Edit page lets you assign any Independence 2 parameter directly to one of the 8 freely assignable custom remote knobs or buttons: Effect: The Effect Section contains presets of premium impulses of rooms, scoring stages, concert halls, churches, cathedrals and many more. Use the arrows to browse through all the presets or save your own settings as preset. There is also a custom learn option for any Independence 2 parameter, so you just have to select this option for the parameter you want to assign to one of the custom control knobs or buttons. To finish the assignment you only have to click on the knob or button you want to use for the manipulation of the selected parameter. The settings you do here affect the selected layer or its Alternates/Sections. Using the Content Browser all Alternates and Sections of a layer clearly get listed and can get edited related to the layer as well as individually. Default View / Content Browser: With Independence s clearly arranged multi-page Modules editor you have always the best possible overview of your available settings (Default View) and currently loaded and selected Layers, Sections and Alternates (Content Browser). Using the Flexible Modifiers you can connect any source to any destination. You can use this feature to customize and manipulate your instruments as well as to simplify and automate your work. One of the most outstanding features of the Flexible Modifiers is the possibility of any number of multiple assignments : Using only one controller (e.g. your keyboard, MIDI controller or also host automation) and only one movement, you can change as many as desired parameters at the same time - e.g. volume, filter Cuttoff and panorama!!! Independence supports even different controller ranges (min. and max. values) and individual envelope settings per parameter as well as opposite changes of value (invert). Of course you can also extend each single parameter of the multiply assigned Modifiers with further Modifiers individually at any time. 9 Time Modulator relative! If the absolute mode is activated, the global AHDSR settings of a layer get ignored and only the entered values for the Alternates and/or Sections apply. Working in the relative mode, the global AHDSR settings of the layer do not get ignored and the individual entried for Alternates and/or Sections get added to these values - individualisation for highest demands! Intsert Filters and Effects: You can add over 40 professional filters and effects in the mixer per track as well as in the Modules area per Layer, Alternate and Section. You can get detailled information on all Independence filters and effect with a click on the insert effects link in the right navigation bar. These are amongst others: Unlimited Custom Channels One of the many Independence features for fast and flexible adjustment and editing of single parts of a loaded instrument. If you select only the snare drum out of a loaded drum kit layer and create a new Custom Channel (internal, virtual channels) with this Section, for example, you now can individually adjust and customize the character of the snare without manipulating the entire drum kit layer - changing the room, EQs or compression of the snare, for example. Beside the standard keyswitch between several Layers Independence also contains a layer-internal keyswitch. So you can switch not only between whole layers but also inside a layer between different playing styles, for example. Sync/Tempo Pulldown: Unlimited BUS Channels In Independence you can assign an unlimited number of BUS sends (existing as well as new BUS sends) to each Layer, Alternate or Section. This feature offers a so far unachieved flexibility in the manipulation of single parts or even complete instruments. So you can adjust all your instruments to fit to each other in just a few seconds - without switching from Independence to your host application. absolute and relative Volume AHDSR For the first time ever Independence offers a volume AHDSR curve which can be use absolute as well as 16 17

10 INDEPENDENCE 2 - MAPPING EDITOR: The mapping of sampled instruments as well as the adjustment of the single audio samples cover the soul of any instrument. A polished mapping finally decides about the authenticity, liveliness and the sound of an instruments during the perfomance. Individual adjustments to your personal way of performing the instrument, the dynamic of the keyboard and the required variety of available playing styles, velocities and alternatives are essential for an authentic sounding performance. Default View / MIDI Editor / Content Browser / Audio Files Browser: With Independence s clearly arranged multi-page mapping editor you have always the best possible overview of your available settings (Default View), currently loaded and selected Layers, Sections and Alternates (Content Browser) and available audio files (Audio Files Browser) you maybe want to import! You can easily switch between the different pages with the buttons in the upper right corner and your screens on the left side of Independence will change accordingly: Mapping Editor: With Independence s clearly arranged mapping editor it has never been so easy to create your custom mappings in just a few seconds. The sophisticated editing options and the amazing graphical representation enable you to edit multi-velocity instruments: Key position, velocity range, x-fades, fade-ins, fade-outs and individual curves for each sample. Default View: MIDI Editor: To facilitate the process of creating mappings for your sounds, Independence includes an unique Auto- Mapping-Import feature: Independence recognizes the name-structure of multiple samples that belong together and offers in addition the following import options for the files: multi key mapping (for melodic instruments), one key mapping (for percussive instruments), chromatic (loops and FX), and the unique yellow tools X-Y-Z mapping (3D mapping in three axis) for auto recognizing Sections and Alternates. Content Browser: Audio Files Browser: Audio Editor: After the import of own samples or also existing Layers, the powerful audio editor enables the subsequent fine-tuning of the start/end points of the sample and also the loop markers, volume, pitch, etc. of each single sample. The visual display of the audio files contains next to the zoomable waveform and the file name also all information on sample rate, bit rate, file type, length, number of frames and file size. If you are using multi channel samples you can show and hide all single channels of each file

11 Automatic Groove Recognition - Slice Editor: Any restrictions and limitations regarding the editing of Loops - and specially regarding the change of the tempo - are now thanks to the innovative Flexible Groove mode of Independence a thing of the past! In the Audio Editor you can switch to the Slice mode at any time. Using the sensitivity settings you can adjust the automatic groove recognition for the selected loop. Furthermore the Slice Editor allows many more flexible and intuitive editing options: Zoom, fixing amd moving slice markers, manual deletion and adding of slice markers and finally the frame accurate movement and adjustment of all slice markers. To get the best possible overview about your current settings and adjustments you can simply click on a slice to play back only this one, so you can always check the results of your adjustments immediately... as usual for Independence all this is possible in real-time!!! And if you wonder about the sense...? For the first time it is possible to slow down your audio loop in its original tune up to 60% without loss of quality! Of course you can also change and adjust the tune of your loop anytime at will. MIDI Groove Player & Editor (Pro Groove Extension): For the first time it is possible to create, edit, customize, overlap, etc. multi-dynamic MIDI files in a software sampler!!! With the Pro Groove Extension you can work with MIDI files and edit them like Zones in the Independence Mapping Editor. 12 After the selection of the audio files you want to import you can use the options pull-down menu at the bottom of the browser to choose between several options for the auto-mapping: Depending on the selection of your preferred auto-mapping style you can now select the root key for your mapping: INDEPENDENCE 2 - PERFORMANCE: The goal of sampled instruments is to sound as close to a real instrument as possible. So, what exactly is it that makes a real instrument sound that real for us...? On the one hand it is the personal touch of the musician who plays the instrument. On the other hand it is the behaviour of the instrument that counts and so the fact, that the same note never sounds the same. Exactly this is where Independence joins in using an extemely designed and innovative method of selection sounds during the playback. You can even assign different legato and performance settings to each Alternate, playing style and playing technique separately. So the performance mode of Independence is the Humanizer for your instruments and sounds. Default View / Content Browser: With Independence s clearly arranged multi-page Performance Mode editor you have always the best possible overview of your available settings (Default View) and currently loaded and selected Layers, Sections and Alternates (Content Browser). You can easily switch between the different pages with the button in the upper right corner and your screens on the left side of Independence will change accordingly: Default View: Content Browser: That s it! Independence recognizes all audio files that belong together and maps them automatically with the options you ve selected. Of course you can rerun this import process as many times as you want - even within the same Layer patch - and thus create your custom mappings quite simply, fast and flexibly. Performance Mode: Multi Dynamic Alternates, Repetitions, Steps, Articulations: With up to 32 different variations per sample (Section) any static sounding performance is a thing of the past. The playback of the alternate steps can be at random or also assigned individually. It is the unique sample and file management architecture of Independence that allows such realistic performances that are far away from previous sample based instruments

13 Performance Mode: Multi Dynamic Advanced Legato Mode: To make these instruments sound even more authentically, Independence also offers an amazing Advanced Legato Mode with two different legato behaviors. The legato parameters can be assigned to each Section individually to achieve an unmatched simulation of the realistic behavior of an instrument played with legato. Separate start, option and target values enable you to perfect your legato course on the keys up-and-down. To achieve even more spectacular results you can combine the Advanced Legato Mode with Independence s Tune Model. type. On the upper right side of the browser there is the search option. You can click on the triangle icons on the left of each folder to expand its content or double-click the folder to open it. To load Projects, Layer Sets, Layers and Sections you can use the buttons at the bottom or just double-click the file you want to load. Layer Sets and Layers can also get added to your current Layers. In this case the Layers do not get loaded into the currently selected Layer/Layer Set (and thus do not replace the content of the Layer) but added as one or more new Layers. If there is no Layer existing and you import Layers, Sections, MIDI or audio files, a new Layer gets created automatically. Search Menu: One of the most sophisticated features of the Independence Browser is the search function. You can not only enter keywords for your search but you can also specify where Independence should search for your keywords: Inside the search pull-down menu you can customize your search with the activation/ deactivation of the available search options. The available search options always depend on the file type you have selected. Here are the options for Layers...: INDEPENDENCE 2 - BROWSER: The sophisticated file BROWSER of Independence gives you immediate, fast and easy access to any files you can use in Independence. You get an overview of your Independence Projects, Layer Sets, Layers and Sections and also all available MIDI and audio files inside your Independence Root folder - so you have six browsers in one. Overview:... and here for MIDI files, for example: At the top of the Browser page you have the six main buttons for the supported file types. Below these main buttons there are two navigation arrows to step through your folders, a refresh button for your Independence Root folder and a home button to switch back to the top level of the selected file 24 25

14 File Display: The Independence Browser can also show many attributes of your files. This way you can customize the file display at will to get always the file details you need. The attributes menu always show the available file attributes you can display. Additionally you can also scale the width of your columns. Use your mousewheel or the scroll bars to scroll the content of the display accordingly. Attributes Batch: For Projects, Layer Sets and Layers there is an information batch option at the bottom of the browser page. Attributes are extremely useful to specify your search process. In the pull-down menu you can select which kind of information you want to add or replace. Afterwards you can enter the information in the textfield right beside the pull-down menu and press the batch button to start the process for all your selected Projects, Layer Sets or Layers. Pre-listen And Import Options: At the bottom of the Browser page there are the pre-listen and import parameters for Audio and MIDI files. You can also activate the autoplay button - then the audio file playback starts automatically when you click on a file. Use the play and stop buttons at the bottom of the browser to start or stop the playback of an audio file - so you can listen to it before you may load the file. To import one or more audio files into the currently selected Layer you can double click the selected files or use the execute button: The import menu shows all the options you can use for the import of audio files. This is a very useful tool to edit the attributes for many files in one simple step. Welcome to the most professional Plug-In mixer ever! INDEPENDENCE 2 - MIXER: This professional mixer allows you to edit, mix and finish your instrument projects completely independent from your host. You can assign UNLIMITED BUS channels to your project. For your individual settings each Layer channel contains 5 BUS sends (selectable as pre and post). Furthermore you can add an unlimited number of CUSTOM channels (INTERNAL VIRTUAL CHANNELS) which let you customize your Sections of each Layer. So you can create additional virtual channels for an easier and more comfortable editing of your Layer. Especially for the mixer it is very important to have fast access to your tracks, pure control and a best possible overview of your channels. For this reason you can easily change the sequence of all channels by drag n drop and additionally enlarge the mixer to the full size of the plug-in window, so you will have the maximum view for the mixdown of your instrument. The MIDI file section of the browser works nearly the same way as the audio file section. The playback of the MIDI file will always use the instrument(s) of the currently selected Layer. Instead of the pre-listen volume you can adjust for audio files, for MIDI files you can adjust the playback tempo for MIDI files: On default the playback tempo of MIDI files is their original tempo. Deactivate the original tempo button if you want to playback MIDI files in your current Independence tempo

15 For manipulating, adjustment and mixing of your instruments the Independence mixer also contains over 30 professional insert effects and filters. You can load as many insert effects per channel as you want, switch the sequence of the inserts by drag n drop and finally save the settings of each single insert or even complete filter banks as presets. As the inserts effects and filters are very extensive in functionality and explanation, all details about this part of Independence are explained in an own category. You will find all further information about the insert effects by clicking on insert effects in the right navigation bar. Here are the major features: Layer internal host and MIDI automation overall AND user customizable MIDI channel mixer automation you can record the movement of any automated parameter directly in your host application MIDI learn and host learn invert : invert your controller settings with one click automation bypass option MIDI thru: Route incoming MIDI signals from Independence to any other connected hardware or software that can communicate with Independence via MIDI. Contrary to a synthetically produced Reverb the Impulse Response processing of Origami uses real rooms to for the creation of the reverb. This form of the reverb creation is also called convolution reverb, since during the signal generation the mathematical operation of convolution is used. To make the assignment of MIDI controllers even easier we integrated next to the manual assignment also a midi learn function. Just click on this option in the pull-down menu and move any of your MIDI controller you want to use for the parameter afterwards. 23 INDEPENDENCE FX - SURROUND ENVIRONMENT: Independence FX - powerful surround features: ALL insert filters and effects of Independence FX are fully surround compatible. Worldwide unique in the Independence FX is the flexibility of switching between different surround formats: You can change the input and output format of Independence FX completely independent from the original input format of your audio file! Generally Independence FX recognizes the surround format of your hostchannel automatically and assigns the input and output format accordingly. Nevertheless you can assign other surround formats afterwards at any time - here an example: Your host-channel has the surround format 5.0 DTS. You only want to edit the three front channels and finally create a new surround format after your editing. Simply select the input format 3.0 Cinema in Independence FX, assign any insert filters and effects you want, and finally select the output format 5.0 Dolby Digital.
