2 The complex field of Newsroom automation and distributed media has been dominated by the MOS protocol in recent years. MOS allows a standardised connection via TCP/IP between news management and media infrastructures, creating an interactive data exchange between the text news workflow and the video media ingest, editorial and play-out systems. In the past MOS connectivity has primarily been a feature of proprietary format video servers and specialised news edit products. However, with the rise of QuickTime as a primary media format, and the popularity of Apple's Final Cut Pro editing system, the News world is changing, and the reality of an end-to-end digital media workflow for news, leveraging reliable, Unix based Apple Macintosh computers and QuickTime video has arrived. PictureReady! forms the record channel of your modular video server, whilst FinalCut Pro is your editorial station, and VirtualVTR is your on-air playback channel. You can freely add as many record, edit and playback channels as you like, provided you have sufficient bandwidth available.pictureready, includes revolutionary ProxyPerfect Technology and features a TCP/IP connection to the OriginOne MOS gateway. ProxyPerfect delivers real time proxies whilst PictureReady captures, thus allowing instant proxy editing, or low data rate remote browsing of incoming video feeds. PictureReady! News integrates seamlessly with OriginOne to deliver MOS video objects to the News management system as soon as recording begins, and the video objects link to both high quality and proxy versions of the video material. News systems can then playback the Proxy video directly from the news client. PictureReady records from live video feeds with separate LTC timecode, or with 9-pin control of a deck, capturing QuickTime movies in your choice of QuickTime formats including DV25, DV50, DVCProHD, IMX and others. Capturing direct to your shared storage, PictureReady can perform very long captures without stopping, whilst you review, log or edit the incoming picture. PictureReady! also has a multichannel TCP/IP remote control panel which allows remote control of 8 channels of PictureReady ingest from a single remote computer, with the additional capability of 8 channel automated record scheduling. Sienna was developed in close consultation with leading industry professionals, including ENPS, to ensure the ultimate functionality for this demanding environment Richard George - Project Manager - Galler y OriginOne is your MOS gateway between news management systems and the Sienna QuickTime media infrastructure. OriginOne maintains a mirror image of the MOS information on the news system, and delivers the appropriate data to the various Sienna applications. OriginOne also allows Sienna applications, such as PictureReady, to push MOS video objects back into the news system so they may be incorporated into stories and running orders. OriginOne further supports the news system by including a redirection server to map proxy links inside MOS objects, with the server sharing the proxies for playback. OriginOne also includes a proxy generator to automatically create approval proxies for finished craft edited pieces. OriginOne supports the MOS object creation system to allow news system clients to prepare 'dummy' objects early in the day, which will later be attached to incoming video feeds, or finished craft edits. Finally, the database inside OriginOne can be used for basic QuickTime asset management for the media infrastructure. SIENNA Client applications serviced by OriginOne include PictureReady, StoryCut, AutomationX, GraphicArtist and VirtualVTR, all communicating via a quick, convenient and reliable TCP/IP protocol.

6 StoryCut adds MOS Story functionality to Final Cut Pro. It allows the craft editor to browse the running orders and stories from the news management system (via OriginOne), and then view the story text whilst editing in Final Cut. StoryCut's WordLink technology connects the timeline position in Final Cut with the text of the story, automatically highlighting the story word which relates to the timeline position. This allows editors to easily match video running time with story duration. Of course StoryCut automatically updates when the story is changed on the news system, and uses presenter read-rate information from the news system, to ensure accurate pacing of the story text. Finally, StoryCut allows the craft editor to deliver a finished piece back to the News system as a MOS object, ready to be inserted into the running order. AutomationX provides play to air central automation for SIENNA workflows. Using SIENNA TCP/IP Protocol, AutomationX controls multiple VirtualVTR and GraphicArtist channels to deliver your finished show smoothly and reliably. AutomationX can receive MOS running orders from the news system via OriginOne, and uses the embedded metadata in the MOS objects to locate video media resources on your shared storage. AutomationX automatically cues up the required QuickTime media in the playback machines, and controls A/B play-out according to the running order. AutomationX also controls the Sienna GraphicArtist title generator, feeding the title instructions embedded in title MOS objects to instantly deliver the real time rendered imagery. 7 SIENNA GraphicArtist leverages the phenomenal power of Apple's Quartz Composer architecture, to deliver world-class real time motion graphics and titles. Graphic templates are created by a technical artist using Apple's Quartz Composer editor, and placeholders are inserted for text to be defined at run time. Further down the line, GraphicArtist objects are created directly inside the news management system, using a web-page based interface, to select the required template, enter the text appropriate to this story, preview the resulting image as a JPEG picture, and then store the completed title as a self contained MOS object ready to be inserted into a running order. GraphicArtist exploits modern OpenGL GPU acceleration for next generation graphics performance with incredible creative flexibility and on air control. SIENNA VirtualVTR provides the QuickTime play-out channels for your media workflow. Supporting all formats of SD and HD QuickTime natively without the need to transcode, VirtualVTR plays original and edited media from your shared storage directly to air. VirtualVTR may be controlled using a wide variety of methods including Sony P2 protocol (with Odetics extensions), TCP/IP (using SIENNA protocol from AutomationX, or the VirtualVTR Remote control application), MMC, USB keyboard or Jog Shuttle controller, GPIs, or timecode chase. All control protocols can be active simultaneously. Multiple VirtualVTR channels interface with AutomationX to allow fully automated multichannel play to air. VirtualVTR systems can also be linked in a 'buddy' configuration for redundancy, where the second system automatically chases the first, frame accurately, and in the event of failure of the primary system the backup system will already be playing back the program in sync, ready for the director (or fail-over monitor) to switch to the backup. SIENNA VirtualVTR is a mature and powerful system with many additional functions, providing an excellent, modular play to air infrastructure.
