CHAPTER L MASTERING THE VEGAS BONUS PLUG-INS I used the beta version of Vegas 5 to write this book. When the software was released, two exciting plug-ins Magic Bullet Movie Looks and Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer were included as part of the package. After working with these powerful plug-ins, I felt they should be included with the book, which unfortunately had been edited and sent to the printer shortly after Vegas 5 was released. Therefore, I decided to cover these plug-ins in the bonus chapter you are now reading. One of the shortcomings of digital video is that it has a slightly cold and flat look to it. Videographers have concocted various workarounds for this deficiency, which has meant working with curves, altering the video gamma, and other such delights. And, of course, a recipe that works perfectly for one video falls flatter than a cake without yeast when applied to another video. If you want a foolproof way of rendering video with a film-like appearance, use the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in. This plug-in enables you to choose from 10 presets that are based on the looks of popular movies. If you like what you see, you can download five additional free presets from the Red Giant Software (the makers of Magic Bullet Movie Looks) Web site. In Chapter G, Creating Generated Media, you learned how to use the Media Generators tab to add titles to your productions. The title presets enable you to add professional-quality titles and credits to your productions. Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer gives you the power to create compelling titles with animated text. You can render your title animations in a variety of formats and then add them to a Vegas project. With Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer, you add keyframes where you want to introduce a change. This is similar to adding keyframes to a video effect timeline. When a book is written, an author has to decide what to include and what to leave out. One item that I omitted is command markers, which I m including in this 4

bonus chapter. You use command markers when you create a video project that will be displayed as streaming video from a Web site. Command markers enable you to execute a command when a specified frame in your production is played. The Windows Media Player and the Real Player support them. You can introduce command markers to open a Web page, display text, or display a title. Tools You ll Use 5

LESSON 1 RENDER CINEMA-LIKE VIDEO What You ll Do In this lesson, you ll learn how to use the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in to render video that has an organic film-like appearance. You ll learn to work with the presets and, if desired, blend the effect with the original video to obtain a custom look. Adding the Plug-In to Your Project When you want to add that special touch to a project and have the rendered video look like film, you add the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in to a video event or a video track. In this lesson, you add the plug-in to a track, which applies the plugin to every video event in the track. This method of applying a plug-in is feasible when you need to apply a video effect to every event in a video track. If you need to make subtle changes, you can always synch the cursor, navigate to the point on the timeline where you want the change to occur, and then open the Video Track Event FX dialog box to make the desired change. Remember: When you add a keyframe, Vegas interpolates the change between keyframes. By default, the interpolation is linear. You can select the keyframe, right-click, and from the dropdown list choose the desired method of interpolation: Linear, Fast, Slow, Smooth, Sharp, or Hold. If you don t want the 6 NAKED VEGAS 5 Mastering the Vegas Bonus Plug-Ins Chapter L

change to occur until the keyframe is reached, right-click the previous keyframe and choose Hold from the drop-down list. Choosing a Preset Magic Bullet Movie Looks provides you with 10 presets: Artistic, Bistro, Filmic, Filmic Cool, Filmic Warm, Neo Dark, Neo Light, Sepia Red, War Epic Dark, and War Epic Light. Each preset is based on a look seen in popular films. As with other Vegas plug-ins, you can add additional effects to the plug-in chain. By daisy-chaining Magic Bullet Movie Looks, you can create a unique look. The plug-in works like a filter in an image editing program. However, in an image editing application, you apply the filter to a single image, whereas Vegas applies the plug-in to each frame in the video event or video track. Therefore, rendering times increase substantially. Blending the Preset with the Original You have the option to blend the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in with the original video. This enables you to create the look that s suited perfectly to your project. When you modify a preset by blending it with the original, you can save the modified preset as a custom preset for future use. NOTE Some Vegas users have experienced problems with the version of Magic Bullet Movie Looks that ships with Vegas 5. If you experience problems, download Magic Bullet Movie Looks version 1.02 from Sony Picture s Web site at step2.asp?did=496. Lesson 1 Render Cinema-Like Video NAKED VEGAS 5 7

Add the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in 1. Create a new project. 2. Import several video clips into the Media Pool; then arrange them in the desired order in the main window. Alternatively, you can open an existing project that you want to modify. 3. Insert a new video track; then create a media event for your opening credits. Refer to Chapter G for a refresher course on creating generated media. 4. If the Video Preview window isn t displayed in the workspace, choose View > Video Preview. 5. Click the Video FX tab in the window docking area. 6. Click Magic Bullet Movie Looks. 7. Select the Default preset; then drop it on the video track that contains your project clips to open the Video Track FX dialog box. Alternatively, you can click the Track FX icon to open the Plug-In Chooser dialog box and then add the desired plug-in, as discussed in the book. 8. Click the triangle to the right of the Looks Preset field; then choose the desired option, as shown in Figure L.1. Each preset renders your project differently. You can achieve a nice film-like look with the Filmic preset. The best way to see the effect of each preset is to use the Video Preview window in split screen mode. Remember: When you re in split screen mode, one half of the window shows the original clip, and the other half shows the clip with the plug-in applied. You can also click and drag inside the Video Preview window to determine which part of the preview shows the original video. 9. Preview the project. The Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in uses a lot of processor power to render the effect. Therefore, the project does not preview at the project frame rate. You can get an idea of how the rendered project will look, though. If you re connected to the Internet while reading this, click the links below to preview a clip before and after the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in has been applied. Before After TIP Create a selection, and then create a Dynamic RAM Preview to preview a selection at the project frame rate as outlined in Chapter J, Vegas Tips and Tricks. 10.Keep the project open. You ll be using it in the next objective. FIGURE L.1 Magic Bullet Movie Looks presets 8 NAKED VEGAS 5 Mastering the Vegas Bonus Plug-Ins Chapter L

Blend a preset with the original FIGURE L.2 Previewing the blended plug-in 1. Click the Video Track FX icon to open the Video Track FX dialog box. 2. Drag the Blend with Original slider to determine how much of the original video is blended with the Magic Bullet Movie Looks preset. Alternatively, you can enter a value between 0 and 100 in the Blend with Original text box to the right of the slider. The default value of 0 doesn t blend any of the original, whereas a value of 100 uses the entire original video look for the rendered project. Intermediate values partially blend the original video with the Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in. Of course, a value of 100 defeats the purpose of the plug-in. When you blend original footage with a Magic Bullet Movie Looks preset, it s a good idea to float the Video Preview window and position it alongside the Video Track FX (or Video Event FX dialog box if you ve applied the plug-in to a video event) dialog box, as shown in Figure L.2. As you drag the Blend with Original slider, the Video Preview window updates to reveal your changes. NOTE The Preserve Alpha option is selected by default. This option preserves information in the alpha (transparency) channel. You should leave this option selected when you use other plug-ins, such as the Cookie Cutter or Chroma Keyer, which depend on information from the alpha channel to work properly. 3. Preview the project. Lesson 1 Render Cinema-Like Video NAKED VEGAS 5 9

LESSON 2 GET TO KNOW BORIS GRAFFITI LTD KEYFRAMER What You ll Do In this lesson, you ll get a preview of what you can accomplish using the Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer. Introducing the Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer You use Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer to create animated titles for your video productions. The version of Boris Graffiti that ships with Vegas 5 is a standalone application. It doesn t have the power of the full version of Boris Graffiti (hence the LTD in the application title), but you can use Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer to create some cool animated titles. When you launch Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer, you have two timelines with which to work: Text and Background. You use the Text timeline to create text and then animate it. You can use a color, gradient, image, or video as the background. You add keyframes to the timelines to animate the text and background. At each keyframe, you specify the change to be made. 10 NAKED VEGAS 5 Mastering the Vegas Bonus Plug-Ins Chapter L

Working with the Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer timeline might seem a little daunting at first. For example, creating a change on the Text timeline is not a simple matter of creating a keyframe on the text timeline and then modifying the text. You have to expand the text timeline to reveal the text parameters that can be animated on a keyframe. You then have to select the parameter timeline, create the keyframe, and specify the change to be made. You ll find it quicker to come up to speed with this application if you analyze and modify presets from the application s library of presets. Creating a Title Using the Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer Library Within the Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer Library, you ll find several presets in the Title Container section that you can use as the basis for titles that you create for your project. You can replace the preset text with the title of your production. If desired, you can also modify the settings on each keyframe or create additional keyframes to further modify the title animation. Exporting the Title for Use in Vegas After you create a title in Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer, you export the title as a movie or an image sequence. When you create a title that you re going to use as part of a Vegas production, your best alternative is to export the file as an uncompressed AVI. When you import the file into Vegas, the file is rendered using the project settings. Lesson 2 Get to Know Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer NAKED VEGAS 5 11

The timeline is expanded, and the transformation curve for the timeline is displayed, as shown in Figure L Position your cursor over the first keyframe mark on the Opacity track. Keyframe markers on tracks are not dots. Track keyframe marker icons are shown in Figure L.9. The opacity value (0) for that keyframe is displayed. An opacity value of 0 renders the text invisible. 4. Position your cursor over the second, third, and fourth keyframe markers on the timeline. The opacity values for the keyframe markers are 100, 100, and then 0. At a value of 100, the text is completely opaque. The transformation curve between the third and fourth keyframes gradually fades the opacity to 0. NOTE You can change the duration of a project by typing a new value in the Dur text field, which resides directly above the track list. Remember to enter the duration as hh:mm:ss:ff, where hh is hours, mm is minutes, ss is seconds, and ff is frames. FIGURE L.9 Transformation curve Dur text box Keyframe markers 5. Click the triangle to the left of the Rotate Z track. 6. Click the second keyframe (signified by a dot) on the My track. Clicking a keyframe dot on the timeline moves the current time indicator to that keyframe, which is highlighted in red. NOTE You can navigate to any position on the timeline by clicking and dragging the Current Time Indicator to the desired frame. Lesson 2 Get to Know Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer NAKED VEGAS 5 15

The value becomes a negative number, and the transformation curve is adjusted, as shown in Figure L Continue adding keyframes to the various tracks whose parameters you want to change. As you can see by the number of parameters, you can create some wonderful title animations in Boris Graffiti LTD Keyframer. The easiest way to master this application is with a bit of creative play. 10.Right-click the Title Container 1 track; then choose Preview Track from the shortcut menu. The preview window opens and plays your title animation against a transparent background. When you export the project as a movie, it is rendered with the preset background. 11.Keep the project open. 17 LESSON 3 ADD COMMAND MARKERS TO A PROJECT What You ll Do Understanding Command Markers If you create video for display on Web sites, you ll find command markers useful. When a streaming video that has command markers is played back in a Web browser, the command executes when the frame is played. You can use command markers with video that will be rendered for streaming playback with the Real Player (RM file format) and the Windows Media Player (WMV file format). In this lesson, you ll learn to add command markers to a project. Command markers are used to execute commands when a frame of a streaming video is played. Using Command Markers for Streaming Video You have several commands available for streaming video. Table L.1 lists the most commonly used commands, the type of media they are used with, and a description of what the command does when the frame on which the command marker has been inserted is played back. 18 NAKED VEGAS 5 Mastering the Vegas Bonus Plug-Ins Chapter L

TABLE L.1: Command Marker Commands Command Supported Player Description URL Windows Media Player Displays the desired URL in the viewer s browser when the and Real Player frame is played back Text Windows Media Player Displays text in the Caption area of the Windows Media Player, which is located below the Video window Title Real Player Displays the title in the Real Player when the frame is played Author Real Player Displays the author information in the Real Player when the frame is played Copyright Real Player Displays copyright information in the Real Player when the frame is played NOTE To display text in the Windows Media Player, the user must choose Play > Captions and Subtitles > On If Available from the Windows Media Player menu. TIP When you render the project as streaming video using a WMV template, click the Summary tab and type the title, copyright, and author information. Title information is displayed in the Windows Media Player if you choose View > Now Playing Options > Title from the Windows Media Player menu. Author information is not displayed in the Windows Media Player, but it s available if the file is selected from a computer desktop and the file properties are viewed. The author, copyright, and title information are also displayed alternately with the streaming information in the player status bar. Inserting Command Markers into a Project You insert command markers on the desired frame. The actual frame on which you insert the marker depends on the command you want to execute when the frame is played back. For example, if you use the URL command, you should choose the last frame of the video because the Web browser content is refreshed with the URL when the frame is played. Use title commands with a marker on the first frame of the video so that the information is displayed for the duration of the video. Lesson 3 Add Command Markers to a Project NAKED VEGAS 5 19
