4 Elements of Movie Maker: Movie Tasks Pane: The Movie Tasks pane is where you will do almost all of your navigating. From this pane you will import video, pictures, and audio. Also you will add video effects and transitions from here. Don t forget about the handy Movie Making Tips header that is filled with loads of good information. Timeline view: The timeline view is the most comprehensive view. This is the area that you will use to manage your movie that you are creating. You can drop your clips, pictures, and audio in. If your timeline is too crunched and you can t see because it is cramped and small, click on the magnifying glasses with the + and signs; this allows you to zoom in and out to see your timeline better Storyboard View: If you click on show storyboard it will allow you to view your movie project in a different view. The storyboard view lets you look at the video or picture you drop in and the transition from each clip.

5 Collections pane: When you import your video clips, pictures, and audio, the collections pane is where you will see all of your clips. From here you can just click and drag down to the timeline. The black box on the right shows you what your movie will look like while you are working on your project. Just hit the play button (black triangle) and watch what you have done so far. Throughout the instruction packet you will see word boxes that contain useful information that will help you on your movie-making journey!

6 Step-by-Step Instructions: 1. Create a folder in your My Documents folder that you will be saving all of your movie related items in. 2. Go to the start all programs Windows Movie Maker 3. The following steps are to capture video. To Capture video means to take your video from the camcorder to the computer. Capturing Video: **Make sure that you have your tape cued up to the correct place. When you go through the steps of capturing the video from the recorder to the computer, the computer will start playing from where the tape is cued up. 1. Plug the camcorder into the computer using the firewire. Make sure that the camcorder is on. 2. Click on capture video from video device 3. Windows XP will automatically recognize your device. Make sure that your camcorder is highlighted and click next. 4. Choose a name for your clip that you will be using. Save your captured video under your My videos folder. 5. On the next screen click on capture tape manually. Click next. 6. Click on start capture. You will be able to see your footage in the box. When you have captured the wanted footage, click stop capture. Each time you hit the pause button, it will create a new clip. 7. When you have captured all of your clips, click Finish, and Movie Maker will automatically import the files into your collections area of your project.

7 To import video: 1. Click on import video from the movie task pane on the left side of the screen. 2. Select from the drop down menu your folder where you saved your video clip. You can either add one video clip at a time, or you can click on multiple videos while you hold down the ctrl key. Once you have the video clips you need, click on the button import. **You should see your video clips in the Collections space of MM. 3. SAVE YOUR WORK. Please save it in the same folder where your pictures and audio are. This will make it easier for you later! To import pictures: 1. Click on import pictures from the movie task pane on the left side of the screen. 2. Select from the drop down menu your folder where you saved your pictures. You can either add one picture at a time, or you can click on multiple pictures while you hold down the ctrl key. Once you have the pictures you need, click on the button import. **You should see your pictures in the Collections space of MM.**

8 3. SAVE YOUR WORK. Please save it in the same folder where your pictures and audio are. This will make it easier for you later! You are saving a Movie Maker project. To create the actual movie, you will follow different steps once you have finished your movie project. To import audio: **Per the copyright guidelines, you can use a clip of a song for 29 seconds or less without having to get permission from the artist. If you need more information regarding copyright laws, please refer to your green copyright condensed booklet at your school. If your audio is already in a folder: 1. Click on import audio 2. Select your folder from the drop down menu. 3. Select your audio clip and click on import. If your audio is on a CD: 1. Put audio CD into CD drive. 2. Open Windows Media Player. 3. Click File Copy Copy from audio CD and select your CD. **At this point Windows Media Player will copy all the songs off the CD and put them in your My Music folder as files called mp3 s. Now Movie Maker will recognize the audio file. 4. In Movie Maker click on import audio or music. 5. Select the My Music folder and then double click on the desired audio track. 6. Click import.

9 To record your voice on your laptop: 1. Go to start all programs accessories entertainment sound recording. 2. The microphone is located on your laptop. 3. Hit the red circle (record) and say whatever you need to say. When done recording, hit stop. 4. Go to File Save As and save your recording in your My Music folder. 5. Repeat until all of your sounds are recorded. 6. To import your sound file into Movie Maker: a. In Movie Maker, click on import audio or music. b. Select the My Music folder and then double click on the desired audio track. c. Click import.

10 At this point you should have all of your video clips, pictures, and audio in the collections part of Movie Maker. To place video in timeline: *If you want all of your clips to be one length- go to tools then options and pick your desired picture duration. The advanced should pop up by default, that is where you adjust the clip length* 1. Choose what video you would like first, second, etc. Click on your video clip and drag it down to the bottom of the screen where the storyboard is. The picture should drop down into the video part of the storyboard. Continue this process until all of your videos are down in the storyboard. **If you placed a video in the wrong spot, simply click and drag it to where you want it to be. There is a blue line that will show you where you are putting the picture. 2. SAVE YOUR WORK. Please save it in the same folder where your pictures and audio are. This will make it easier for you later! To edit video: 1. Click and drag video clip into timeline. **If you want to shorten or take only a part of a clip, drag your clip into the timeline. Hit the play button. When you found a place you would like to split the clip, press the split button: 2. Once you have split your video clips and deleted the parts you didn t want, continue the steps above with all your video clips. To place pictures in timeline: 1. Choose what pictures you would like first, second, etc. Click on a picture and drag it down to the bottom of the screen where the timeline is. The picture should drop down into the video part of the timeline. Continue this process until all of your pictures are down in the storyboard. It is ok to place a picture between video clips. **If you placed a picture in the wrong spot, simply click and drag it to where you want it to be. There is a blue line that will show you where you are putting the picture.

11 To add video effects: **You can add a video effect to every picture and video.** 1. Click on view video effects. 2. There are 28 different effects you can put to your pictures or video clips. When you add a video effect it will change how the picture or video clip looks. To view how each one is, simply click on the one you want and hit the play button on the black box. 3. Once you pick which one you like, click and drag it down in front of the picture or video clip you want it to be applied to. To add video transitions: 1. Click on view video transitions. 2. There are 60 different transition effects you can add to your pictures or video clips. When you add a transition to your picture or video clip, it will effect how the movie moves from one clip to the next. To view how each one is, simply click on the one you want and hit the play button on the black box. 3. Once you pick which one you like, click and drag it down in front of the picture or video clip you want it to be applied to. **Now is a good time to view what you have created so far! Put the blue line at the beginning of the timeline and check and see how your movie is progressing. If you click on the small blue button right above the play button in the black box, you will be able to see a full screen version of your movie.**

12 To add audio to your timeline: 1. Drag your audio clip down to audio/music in the storyboard. 2. Remember where you got your song, who the artist is, and what the title is. You will have to site it in your credits at the end of your movie. 3. Now that your pictures and video are in your storyboard, you can shorten your audio clip to end at the end of your credits. Put your mouse arrow at the end of the audio clip. Click and drag your audio clip to the left to shorten it. 4. If your audio clip isn t long enough, you can repeat the steps and add another audio clip. The first clip will fade out and the second clip will fade in. Then shorten the second clip if needed. To change audio sounds: 1. If you are going to add a video clip with sound and a song to go with your movie, you will need to adjust your volume in your movie. 2. This button will allow you to change the volume. 3. From here you can adjust to balance between the volume of the video clip and the volume of the audio clip (song) you put in. Adjust with the green and white button: 4. Click on the red X when done adjusting audio levels.

13 To add titles: 1. click on make titles or credits 2. choose titles at beginning 3. Type your title a. To change the font and color: click change text font and color Here you can change font size, color, position, make it bold, italic, underline, etc. b. To change title animation, click on the link and pick your favorite. The title you wrote will appear with the chosen animation in the movie box to the right. Click done, add title to movie 4. You can also add titles on, before or after a selected clip: a. Click on make titles or credits b. Choose either Before, on, or after. c. Follow the steps for adding a title, starting at #3. To add credits: 1. Click on make titles or credits 2. Choose add credits at the end of the movie 3. Type in your credits. These will appear just like the end of a movie. The credits will roll at the end of your movie. You can also change how the credits roll at the end of your movie by clicking on change the title animation. 4. When done, click done, add title to movie 5. You can preview what it will look like in the black box on the right.

14 To add narration to your movie: 1. Click on the little microphone in your timeline. This will allow you to narrate your movie if you would like to. 2. Drag the playback to where you would like to start narrating. Click on start narration. 3. When you are done, simply click stop narration. To save your work and create a movie: ** NOTE: Once you do this step you will be creating a movie that will not be able to be changed. This step makes your timeline into a movie. Don t worry- you always have a saved Movie Maker project (file name ends with.mswmm) that you can go back to and make changes to and then just create another movie with the desired changes.** 1. Click on save to my computer. 2. Follow the save movie wizard steps. a. Name your movie and click next b. Make sure that best quality for playback on my computer is selected and click next c. The movie will save and when it is done, click on finish. If you want to watch your movie when you click finish make sure you select play my movie when I click Finish. To play your movie:

15 1. From desktop, click on My Documents. 2. Double click on My Videos (If you saved your movie somewhere else, go there ) 3. It should open your movie in Windows Media Player. 4. Hit play! Enjoy! ** You can also save your movie to a CD or you can it to yourself or others. Just follow the wizard steps!**

17 Vocabulary This is copied from the Help menu in Movie Maker. A nice reference to have on hand. Collection A collection contains audio clips, video clips, or pictures that you have imported or captured in Windows Movie Maker. A collection acts as a container for your clips, which are smaller segments of audio and video, and helps you organize the imported or captured content. Collections appear in the Collections pane of Windows Movie Maker. Project A project contains the arrangement and timing information of audio and video clips, video transitions, video effects, and titles you have added to the storyboard/timeline. A saved project file in Windows Movie Maker has an.mswmm file name extension. By saving your projects, you can open the project file later and begin editing it in Windows Movie Maker from where you last saved. Movie A movie is the final project you save by using the Save Movie Wizard. You can save a movie to your computer or to a recordable CD, send it as an attachment in an message, or save and send it to the Web. The saved movie can be watched in a media player, such as Microsoft Windows Media Player, or in a Web browser. If you have a DV camera connected to your computer, you can also record your movie to a tape. You and others can then watch the movie on the DV camera or on a TV.
