Getting Started Registering your account When you go to the Clipper development and testing web site at You will see a web page that looks like this shown below: You will need to register a user account with the site. To do this click on the top right button with the text Register for Clipper Pro. After you do this you will be presented with a dialogue box as show below: As this is a test site it is a little buggy in places at the moment. So, when you enter your password you do not do it twice to have checked so please enter your password carefully. After you enter your details click the Register button. After you click on the Register button you will see a confirmation screen like that shown below: 2
Logging In Next click on the Log In button and enter you details. Next you will see your first Clipper toolkit screen as show below it will be empty without any clips. 3
Creating the First Clip We are going to create our first clip. Clipper works well with YouTube, who encourage software developers to create services based on the YouTube system. Clipper also works well with any video MP4 or audio MP3 files that are on the web, if you can obtain their web address (URL), we will show you how to do that later in this guide. In this guide for our first 3 clips we are going to search YouTube for content. To create out first clips we are using the term cars in the Search field highlighted in red in the image above you can enter your own search terms if you like. Enter your search term and then click on the YouTube button to start your search. Below we see the results of our first search for cars NB your search results may be different they are changed by YouTube regularly We are going to select the highlighted video called Cars 1,2 & 3 Funny Moments video. Once we have done this the search results disappear and the video is loaded into the Clipper player and will start playing from the start as shown in the next image: 4
The Cars 1, 2, & 3 video playing in the Clipper Player To make the clip find a place to start the clip and pause the video and then click on the round red button (shown highlighted in a red circle) in the image above, indicating it will record if clicked. Once we click on the red button the video starts to play and the start time is saved. The round red button now changes to become a square red button, indicating that it will stop the recording if clicked and save the end point. 5
In the image below we have selected a short section in the timeline as show in the start and stop boxes from 00:09:56 to 00:09:57 and entered the text Cars Clip as the first line in the text box the first line automatically become the clip title. In the line below that we have entered the text My text here. We have also added two tags in the Tag field (words or phrases separated by commas become tags. Once we are happy with our clip we can click on the Save Clip button and clip will appear in the left hand Cliplist column, as shown in the next image below. The thumbnail that appears with each clip in the left- hand column is provided by YouTube and is usually from near the start of the video it is not usually the same content as the start of the clip itself. 6
The first clip in our Cliplist To play the clip click on the left-hand column entry for the clip. Creating the Second Clip To create our second clip, we repeat the search and select process. This time our search terms was gardening. The image below shows the results of this search. 7
Gardening search Results We selected the first entry in the list called Monthly Gardening Series and it appeared in the Clipper toolkit as show below: 8
From this video, we have created a new clip using the same steps as we did for the first clip, we show the new clip in the image below. You will see that the new clip now appears at the top of the left-hand column. Creating the Third Clip For our third clip, we use the search term pottery and we get the search results shown below 9
From these results, we chose the first one called Throwing / Making a Pottery Salt Pot on the wheel. Using the previous steps, we have created our third clip as shown below it appears at the top of the left-hand column Creating the first Cliplist So far, we have created 3 clips. By default, all the clips we create in Clipper are stored in the All Clips Cliplist. What we want to do now is to create a new Cliplist to present and manage copies of our clips. To do this we click on the header of the Cliplist column this reveals the drop-down menu show here to the right. We select the Create New Cliplist option. Please note that in this guide we are are going to stay in the default Project: My First Project and we will ignore it in the rest of this guide We are prompted to give our Cliplist a new name as shown below 10
We chose the name Training 29 October 2017 and clicked on the OK button to create the new Cliplist. Now that we have our new Cliplist we want to add our clips to it. To do this, for each clip we want to add to a Cliplist we go the left-hand column listing for that clip and click on the + icon as show highlighted in the image here: After we have clicked on the + icon we get a dialogue box message like the one shown here showing the possible Cliplists we can add our clips to: In our case the Training 29 October 2017 is the only Cliplist so we click on the checkbox to the left (as shown) and then click on the Add to Cliplist(s) button. We repeat the process for the other 2 11
clips in our All Clips default Cliplist. Next, we want to move into our new Cliplist to continue working. To do this we go to the header of the Cliplist Column as we did before and click. Now we see the name of the new Cliplist in the dropdown menu. We Select our new Cliplist and the header name changes to that and we see our clips in the new Cliplist. Cliplists - Things to Remember Every time we login to Clipper it automatically opens the default All Clips Cliplist. So, we need to remember to select the Cliplist that we want to work in. Once we have selected a Cliplist the clips we create will appear in that Cliplist Every time we create a clip it appears in both the currently selected Cliplist and the All Clips Cliplist, which acts as a master list of all the clips that you have created If we delete a clip from a Cliplist (by clicking on the Dustbin icon) it will also disappear from every other Cliplist it appears in and we are warned about this (this function is under review). If we want to alter an existing clip in a Cliplist we have 2 options: o 1 we can edit the clip and once we have made our changes we click on the Update Clip button o 2 we can edit the clip and save our changes as a new clip by clicking on the Save As New Clip button. This creates a new clip with our changes and leaves the original where it is in the Cliplist. 12
Cliplists Changing the Order of the Clips We can easily change the order in which the clips in a Cliplist appear. We do this by selecting a clip in the left-hand column by hovering the mouse over the clip and then while keeping the mouse button depressed we move the clip to the new position. As you move the clips you can see this is working because the outline of the clip being moved changes to a dotted line. You get a visual confirmation that the clip is ready to be placed in a new position because another clip will visibly move to make space for you to drop the clip in its new position in the Cliplist you do this by releasing the mouse button. The new order of the Cliplist is automatically stored in the database. Sharing a Clip We can share a clip with both users and non-users of Clipper. To do this we select the clip we want to share and then click on the share icon that appear in the bottom right corner of the clip in the Cliplist it looks like the image shown below: Once you click on this you will be presented with a dialogue box that looks like that shown below: Share Clip Dialogue Box Share Clip Player View When you open the Share Clip link, this is what you see it s essentially the toolkit without edit controls. The clip is displayed paused ready to play hence the player is empty. Once the clip starts to play the information about the clip is displayed underneath. 13
Sharing a Cliplist To share a Cliplist first we have to go to the top of the left-hand column and select a Cliplist please note that we cannot share the default All Clips Cliplist. We are going to select our Training 29 October 2017 Cliplist as shown to the right. Once we have done this we see the share icon at the right-hand side of the Cliplist header it looks like this shown below: Clicking on the Cliplist share icon presents us with a dialogue box that looks like that shown below Share Cliplist Dialogue Box To the right, we can see the Share Cliplist Player When you open the Share Cliplist link, this is what you see it s essentially the toolkit view without edit controls. The Cliplist is displayed paused ready to play hence the player is empty. If the user clicks on the green Play Cliplist button at the top of the left-hand column the clips will play in sequence one after the other. Individual clips can be played by clicking on each clip. Once the clip starts to play the information about the clip is displayed underneath. Share Cliplist Player View 14
Working with Online MP4 Video and MP3 Audio Files Clipper works well with these kinds of media files over the web. If you can find the web address of the file (also known as the URL) you can clip it. In this section, we demonstrate making a clip from an open online video from the Wellcome Trust digital library. Below is a screen shot of the library catalogue where have found a 1960 s anti-smoking film: In the highlighted area, you will see that the film is available to down load. If we right click our mouse button on the link we can copy the web address. We can copy the address and paste it into the address bar of a web browser and the video will play Wellcome Trust Library Catalogue The video web address pasted into the browser address bar We are using the Amazon S3 address for this file you can find it here and try it for your self 895e5b95c195.mp4 15
Below we show you the video playing in a browser The Wellcome Trust Video Playing in a web browser To start making a clip from this video we paste the web address into the Source field in the Clipper Toolkit under the player window as show highlighted below then hit the return key on your keyboard and the video will be loaded into the Clipper player and start playing. After this you make a clip in exactly the same way that we have done previously. Pasting the MP4 Video URL into the Source: field of the Clipper Toolkit 16
Below we see our training Cliplist with a new clip that has been created from our MP4 video Clip from online MP4 video file added to Cliplist 17
