New User Registration: New users must create an account with VBAlert in order to receive and/or text message alerts. Users can register multiple mobile devices and addresses under one account. Entering Account Information 1. Go to and click on the New User Registration link on the left 2. Create an account by completing the information on the right a. Name: enter your first and last name b. address: enter a valid address. This address will be used to log into your VBAlert account. VBAlert will automatically register this address to receive VBAlert messages. You can change this on the My Devices tab later if you want. c. Accounts: if you wish to enter additional accounts, enter them here. Click the Add More button to add multiple accounts. d. Cell & Smart phones (via SMS/text message): select your cellular carrier from the drop-down list and enter your 10-digit cellular phone number. Click the Add More button to enter multiple mobile devices. e. Account Password: create an account password. Passwords must be at least six characters. f. Terms of Service: click on terms of service in the blue box. Once you have read the terms of service, select Yes from the drop-down and click the Continue button. Identifying Areas of Interest Enter your home address (format: 1234 Anywhere Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23451) at the top of the screen. If your home address is in Virginia Beach, you will receive VBAlert messages that correspond to that address (for instance, if your home address is in the Kempsville area of the city, and there is an incident in that area that generates a VBAlert message, then the device(s) and address(s) that you registered will receive the VBAlert message). If you wish to identify additional points of interest in Virginia Beach for which you want to receive alerts, click the Add Location button ( ) in the Map Control Mode section, and click the area/location on the map that you want to add or pin. Repeat this process for each of your areas of interest. By pinning locations on the map, you are indicating that you want to receive VBAlert messages that apply to these areas. You can use the Address Lookup to enter a specific address. Enter the address in the Address Lookup field and click the Find button. The map will display a location icon ( ) for that address. Pin the location by clicking on the location icon while you are in Add Location mode. 3
To delete pinned locations on the map, click on the Delete Location button ( ) in the Map Control Mode section, and then click the pin ( ) on the map. The location is then deleted. When you have finished adding your area(s) of interest, click the Continue button. My Alerts (subscribing to groups) The My Alerts page is where you subscribe to groups for which you want to receive VBAlert messages. By subscribing to a group, you are indicating that you want to receive VBAlert messages for that group, regardless of the locations you pinned on the map (for example, if you are subscribed to the Weather Warnings group, you will receive all messages for this group, even if they apply to an area of the city that you did not pin on the map). You will see a list of available groups (similar to the one shown below). To subscribe to a group, click the add to group button next to the group you want (you will notice that when you select the group, the button will turn green and display group member ). To unsubscribe from a group, simply click the group member button to remove the check. Note: Weather Warnings is the only category available at this time, but new categories may be added in the future so check back periodically to review your preferences. Once you have finished, click the Continue button. Your registration is now complete, and you will see the VBAlert home page. 4
Home Tab From the Home page, you can review your account information, edit your profile, send a test alert to your registered device(s), or delete your account. To send a test alert to your registered device(s), click the Send a TEST ALERT button To edit your account profile, click on the Edit Profile button. Edit User Profile On the Edit User Profile screen, you can update: Contact address (this is the account that you use to log into the VBAlert system) 5
Account password (this is the account password that you use to log into the VBAlert system) First Name Last Name Home Address Once you are finished updating your information, click the Update button. Locations Tab On the map, you will see the Home pin ( ), which identifies the home address that was entered during the registration process. To change this address, click on the Home tab and then click the Edit Profile button. If your home address is in Virginia Beach, you will automatically receive VBAlert messages that correspond to that address. If the home address you entered is outside of Virginia Beach, you must identify one or more points of interest in Virginia Beach in order to receive VBAlert messages. VBAlert will only send notifications for events in Virginia Beach, not surrounding areas. Place a pin ( ) on the map for each location of interest. By pinning a location on the map, you are indicating that you want to receive VBAlert messages that correspond to that location. 6
Adding Locations: To add a location of interest to your profile, click the Add Location button ( the Map Control Mode section, then click your area of interest on the map. ), in To identify a specific address, type the address in the Address Lookup field, and click the Find button. The map will display a location icon ( ) for that address. Pin the location by clicking on the location icon while you are in Add Location mode. Deleting Locations: To delete pinned locations on the map, click on the Delete Location button ( ) in the Map Control Mode section, and click the pin ( want to delete. The location is then deleted. ) on the map for the location you Devices Tab From the Devices tab, you can add, delete or change your registered address(s) and/or mobile device(s). Groups are categorized by topic (e.g. Weather, Traffic, etc.). By default, all group categories are maximized so that all groups are available to view simultaneously. If you want to limit 8
the number of groups displayed, simply click the -/+ button to the left of the topic name to collapse or expand the category. To subscribe to a group, click the add to group button next to the group you want (you will notice that when you select the group, the button will turn green and display group member ). To unsubscribe to a group, simply click the group member button no longer be subscribed to that group.. You will To search for specific group, enter a search term (e.g. Traffic or Road Closures) in the Search box, and click the Search button. If there is a group that corresponds to your search, it will display in the My Alerts section. Alert Log Tab The Alert Log displays a list of alerts that you have received from the VBAlert system. Help Tab Use the Help tab to view Help topics and frequently asked questions (FAQs). You can also find contact information for the VBAlert Help Desk here (VBAlertHelp@VBgov.com). Helpful Hints Ensuring VBAlert messages don t end up in your Junk Mail folder Internet Service Providers (ISP) utilize various methods to prevent unsolicited commercial (junk mail or spam) from being delivered to a user s inbox. Some of these methods may mistakenly classify VBAlert messages as spam and send the message to your junk mail folder instead of your inbox. To ensure you receive VBAlert messages, you should add alert@vbalert.vbgov.com to your s safe sender list. 9
