1 WEB ASSIGN SHORT INTRODUCTION 1. LOGGING IN AND OUT You can log in to WebAssign using a Web browser connected to the Internet. Before logging in for the first time, you will need the following information, which you should get from your instructor. Your WebAssign username Your institution or school s code Your initial WebAssign password To log in to WebAssign, perform the following steps. 1. Open your Web browser and enter the following Web address: or the web address provided by your instructor. You will receive the welcome page for WebAssign. From this page, you have access to this on-line Guide, support pages, and other information about using the service. 2. Enter your username, institution (school) code, and password. 3. Click Log In. 1.1 How to Find Your School Code You need a school code to login. The school code is a shortened form of your school s official name. If you do not know your school code, you can search for it from the login page. 1. Go to 2. Click what s this? above the Institution entry box.

2 3. Enter part of your school s official name. 4. Click go! 1.2 How to Reset Your Password If you forget your password and you or your instructor entered an address in your account, you can use the forgot password? link on the login page. 1. Go to 2. Click forgot password? (Note: if WebAssign uses your institution's authentication server, you will have to see your institution's password administrators if you forget your password.) 3. Type your username, institution, and address. (Note: your address must be exactly the same as it appears in your WebAssign account.)

3 4. Click Submit. If your username, institution, and address agree with the entries in your WebAssign account, you will receive an with instructions on how to reset your password. If the address recorded in your WebAssign account is incorrect, please contact your instructor. Your instructor will be able to reset your password and your address. 1.3 Logging Out When you are ready to quit WebAssign, click Logout at the top right. If you use a browser that is shared by others, make sure that the browser does not save your password. 2. ACCESS CODES Once you log in, you may see a WebAssign Notice about entering an access code for your class. Even before you login, you may hear about Access Codes. Some classes require an Access Code and some classes do not. If your class is using Access codes, you will be required to enter the code. There may be a short grace period during which you can use WebAssign without entering a code. After the grace period, you must enter a valid code before you can continue using WebAssign. You will always be able to access the WebAssign instructions for entering your code until you complete the process.

4 If your class requires registration with an Access Code, please note the following important details: An Access Code is not a password. You must be able to login before you can enter your Access Code. You can often purchase an Access Code at your bookstore. You can always purchase an Access Code online from your WebAssign Home page. In general, an Access Code is only good for one class. Occasionally, a textbook may include a two term Access Code. 2.1 Entering an Access Code Some Access Codes begin with 2 or 3 letters followed by 10 numbers. You may have to scratch off a coating to reveal the entire code. A typical Access Code card is shown below: Some Access Codes begin with a longer prefix, e.g. Serway-S or McGraw-2S/3Q, followed by 4 sets of 4 characters. An example is shown below:

5 If you purchased an Access Code card or an Access Code came with your textbook, select the prefix of your Access Code from the pulldown list and click the Go button in the WebAssign Notice. The notice changes to give you the proper number of boxes for your prefix choice. Type in the Access Code in the boxes and click Enter your access code. If your Access Code is a valid unused access code, you will receive a message letting you know you have successfully entered an access code. You will not see the notice about entering an access code again for this class. 2.2 Registering Online If your class is using WebAssign with Access Codes, an easy way to register is online. Simply login and click the Purchase an access code online button. There will be a series of

6 screens requesting information about you and what you are purchasing. The final Confirmation page is listed as the Finish of the process. Be sure you continue until you receive this final step. It will be the Purchase Confirmation. 3. YOUR HOME PAGE After logging in, you will see your personalized WebAssign Home page showing courses for which the instructor has included you in the roster. If you see more than one course, select the course you want to work on from the pulldown menu. Your Home page for a particular class allows you to do the following: View the list of upcoming assignments Access a list of your Current Assignments or Past Assignments Find out when your assignments are due View your Calendar, listing your assignments on the due dates for all your courses, and add new personal events View your Grades, if your instructor has posted them Access the Communication page, containing Forums and Messages if your instructor has implemented them Access the Student Guide Access the My Options link to change your address, password, skin color, or language

7 Logout of WebAssign The Home page also gives the following information: Your name, as it is recorded in WebAssign Your instructor s name The date and time when the Home page was delivered Announcements from your instructor Assignments that are not a link, such as the Midterm in the example above, are external to WebAssign, often given in class on paper. 3.1 WebAssign Notices Your Home page may have a module named WebAssign Notices. The most common notice is about Access Codes. See Chapter 2 for information on Access Codes. 3.2 Customizing Your Home Page Your instructor can customize your Home page by removing some of the modules and by allowing you to customize your Home page. The following screen shows the Home page for a student, whose instructor has allowed the students to rearrange the modules and hide some of them.

8 The white triangles in the header of each module allow you to move the module in the direction indicated. The underscore will minimize the module and the X will hide it. In the above example, the instructor has allowed the student to rearrange the modules and thus the white triangles are displayed. The instructor also allowed the student to hide or minimize My Calendar, and About this Class modules, but not to hide or minimize the Communication, My Assignments, Grades, and Announcements modules. 3.3 Change Your Password (not applicable for schools using their own password authentication) It is good practice to change your initial password that was assigned to you by your instructor. To change your password, 1. Click My Options in the upper right of your WebAssign page. 2. Enter your new password twice and enter your current password in the box that is to the left of the Save button. 3. Click Save.

9 If the change was successful, you will see a message, "Your password has been changed." 3.4 View and Change Your Address It is good practice to enter an address for your WebAssign account. Your instructor may have entered one for you. To view your address in your WebAssign account or to change it, perform the following steps: 1. Click My Options in the upper right of your WebAssign page. 2. Your address is listed as it appears in your WebAssign account. 3. If you wish to change your address or enter one where none exists, enter your preferred address in the form. 4. Enter your current password in the box next to the Save button and click Save. A confirmation is then sent to the entered address. If you receive the and click the link in the , your address will be changed. Your address is not changed until you confirm that you can receive an at that address. 4. ASSIGNMENTS 4.1 My Assignments Although you can access assignments from the Home page, there is only minimal information about them. For a summary of all of your assignments with descriptions, click My Assignments in Main Menu Bar or click Current Assignments in the My Assignments module. By default, all of your current assignments will be displayed with a link to your Past Assignments. The My Assignments summary includes: The name of the assignment for example, Homework Chapter 3 showing the category of assignment in parentheses Homework. The date and time that the assignment is due the last moment that you can submit work done on the assignment A description of the assignment The score you received on the assignment if available

10 Do not wait until the last moment to submit. Your clock may be slightly different than the WebAssign clock. To access an assignment, simply click the name of the assignment you wish to complete. You will receive the assignment, generally with your last responses entered. It is unusual, but possible, for your instructor to turn off the feedback of showing you your previous responses. In this case, clicking the assignment name will always give you a blank assignment. If you have already submitted the assignment, there may be a link to Review All Submissions on the assignment page. Clicking the assignment name gives you your last submission. It does not give you a blank copy of the assignment unless your instructor has chosen to make your submissions have different random numbers every time or your instructor has decided not to give you your previous entries as part of the feedback. 4.2 An Assignment Page Once you click the name of an assignment, the assignment page appears.

11 If you click Show Details for question 1, you will see your score on each part of the question, how many points each part is worth and how many submissions are allowed for each part if you can submit each part separately.
