Contacts Overview CANdelaStudio since version 5.0 has a product activation feature that links the software license to specific computer hardware ( Copy protection ). This application note gives answers to questions frequently asked about CANdelaStudio product activation. The detailed instructions cover the Vector License Manager shipped with CANdelaStudio 7.5 and later. If you need assistance for the Vector Activation Wizard shipped with CANdelaStudio up to version 7.1, please contact Vector (activation@vector.com). 2.0 Activating a license 2.1 Q: What s going wrong? CANdelaStudio was not activated during installation A: Right after installation, you can use CANdelaStudio (Standard edition) for a few days while you activate it (see question 2.2). Without activation, you can use CANdelaStudio after these days as a demo version with unlimited time period. 2.2 Q: How do I activate my license of CANdelaStudio? A: For CANdelaStudio up to 7.1, please contact Vector (activation@vector.com). For CANdelaStudio 7.5 and newer, open the Vector License Manager in CANdelaStudio (select Help Product activation from the main menu) and follow these instructions: Copyright Vector Informatik GmbH Contact Information: or

2 Step 1: Select menu License keys Activate manually Vector activation server Step 2: Enter your Activation / Update ID (from the cover of the product CD). Please ensure that you correctly typed the ID (case sensitive, including all zeros). Step 3: We recommend request method Send request by internet connection if you have Internet access (should you trust Vector software to connect to the Internet? See question 2.6). Click on [OK]. The Vector License Manager opens a connection to Vector s activation server and transmits the activation data. Close the Vector License Manager. Step 4: Restart CANdelaStudio to let the activation take effect. Enjoy CANdelaStudio! 2.3 Q: What options do I have if activation via internet fails? A: In case a HTTP proxy is present in your network that requires a password and/or a login you will be prompted for that data. If it continues to fail, use activation via (see question 2.4). 2.4 Q: How do I activate CANdelaStudio via ? A: For CANdelaStudio up to 7.1, please contact Vector (activation@vector.com). For CANdelaStudio 7.5 and newer, open the Vector License Manager in CANdelaStudio (select Help Product activation from the main menu, as in question 2.2) and follow these instructions: Step 1: Select menu License keys Activate manually Vector activation server Step 2: Enter your Activation / Update ID (from the cover of the product CD). Please ensure that you correctly typed the ID (case sensitive, including all zeros). Step 3: Under Request method, select option Send request by . Click on [OK]. Step 4: Click on [Save as ]. The File dialog opens. Save the request as a file to any location on your hard disk. 2

3 Step 5: Click on [Open ] to automatically open a new with the saved file as attachment. If this fails, attach the file manually to a new . Step 7: Send this to Vector (activation@vector.com). No special subject or formatting of your is required. Step 8: Click on [OK]. Step 9: If you then received a certificate by from Vector, save the certificate from the as a file to any location on your hard-disk. Then again open the Vector License Manager in CANdelaStudio. Step 10: Select menu License keys Continue transaction. Click on [Load certificate ] and select the certificate file stored on your hard-disk (see step 9). Step 12: If this is the first time you activate CANdelaStudio on your PC, the certificate you received configured only your PC itself; you need a second tour (see step 1: send request to Vector, receive and load the certificate). Otherwise, you re done. Close the Vector License Manager. Step 13: Restart CANdelaStudio to let the activation take effect. Enjoy CANdelaStudio! 2.5 Q: What options do I have if activation via fails? A: Maybe you want to try direct activation via Internet it is more convenient (see question 2.2). Otherwise please contact Vector (activation@vector.com) with a detailed description of your actions and what happened. 2.6 Q: Should I trust Vector software to directly connect to the internet? A: Yes. In the product activation process, only data relevant to the installation are transferred. Vector uses the acquired data exclusively for product activation. Vector uses a wide-spread third-party product for implementing product activation, FLEXnet (former FLEXlm). 3

4 2.7 Q: but I need CANdelaStudio on both my desktop and my notebook computer! A: Please contact Vector (activation@vector.com). The Vector Keyman License Dongle may be an option. 2.8 Q: Can I activate a CANdelaStudio update version on a different computer? A: No. You must install a CANdelaStudio update version on the same computer as the previous version. 3.0 Moving a license 3.1 Q: My hard-disk crashed. How do I get a license for my new PC? A: Please contact Vector (activation@vector.com). 3.2 Q: I got a new PC. How do I move my license from the old to the new PC? A: For CANdelaStudio up to 7.1, please contact Vector (activation@vector.com). For CANdelaStudio 7.5 and newer, open the Vector License Manager in CANdelaStudio (select Help Product activation from the main menu) and follow these instructions: Step 1: In the list, select the license you want to move. Step 2: Select menu License keys Return. Step 3: We recommend request method Send request by internet connection if you have Internet access (should you trust Vector software to connect to the Internet? See question 2.6). Click on [OK]. The Vector License Manager opens a connection to Vector s activation server and returns the license. Close the Vector License Manager. Continue with Step 7. Step 4: for license return by , select request method Send request by , click on [OK], then save the request as a file to any location on your hard disk. This file is the only proof of returning the license. Please keep this file carefully. Step 5: A new with the saved file as attachment is automatically opened. If this fails, attach the file manually to a new . Step 5: Send this to Vector (activation@vector.com). No special subject or formatting of your is required. 4

5 Step 6: Wait to receive a confirmation via from Vector. Step 7: install and activate CANdelaStudio on your new PC. 3.3 Q: I lent CANdelaStudio to a sub-contractor. How can I move the license back to my PC? A: Follow the same procedure as described in question
