1 Discussions Discussions is where you will participate in class discussions with your classmates. Once a discussion is posted, every student in the class will be able to read the comments. Once you post a discussion, you will not be able to edit or delete it.

2 Discussion Settings After selecting Discussions from the Communication group, this screen displays. Click on Settings to select options for the way Discussions will display.

3 Discussion Settings Options In Personal Settings, checking the Discussion Topics List displays a list of topics at the left side of the screen. In Reply Settings, checking Include original post in reply will include a copy of the original message in the post. Click on Save after making your selections.

4 Discussions List This is the Discussions List with the topics collapsed. Click the arrows to expand the topics.

5 Discussion List This is the Discussions List with the topics expanded. Click the title of a topic to read the posts. Click a topic title to read original postings for that topic.

6 Read, Start a New Thread, or Reply To post a new discussion, click on Start a New Thread. Key the subject line and message then click on Post. New Discussion posts for the selected topic can be read on this page. If the message is lengthy, three dots ( ) will display. Click the title of the post to read the complete post. To reply to a post, click the title of the student s post then click on Reply to Thread.

7 Read, Start a New Thread, or Reply Filter by read or unread. Click on Unread. When it displays with a gray background, you are viewing unread posts. With a white background, you are viewing all messages. A vertical line displays to the left of unread messages. NOTE: If you post a message, it is automatically marked as read. To view it, click the Unread filter until it has a white background

8 After you click on Start a New Thread, enter a subject and key the message. If you wish to attach a file or record a short (one minute or less) audio message, click the Add attachments link. NOTE: When you click on Post or Save as Draft, your message is marked as read. Change the filter to view all messages.

9 The attachments options display after you click the Add attachments link. To attach a file, click the Upload button. To record a short (one minute or less) audio message, click the Record Audio button.

10 Record an Audio Message When you click the Record Audio button, the Adobe Flash Player Settings dialog box will open. You must click the Allow radio button before recording. Click the red Record button to begin recording. Ensure that you have a microphone attached to your computer. Select the microphone. After you have completed the recording, click the Add button to save the recording and attach it to the Discussion. Click on Post to send the message or Save as Draft to post at a later time.

11 Subscriptions/Notifications Click the Subscriptions link to see all items to which you have subscribed. This is the page where you will go to unsubscribe. You can subscribe to a forum to be notified of new posts to the forum. A forum title displays in black letters and may include one or more topics. You can subscribe to topics to be reminded of new posts to the topic. A topic title displays in blue letters. A topic may include one or more posts.

12 Subscriptions/Notifications Check Show notification on minibar only to be notified of new posts on the minibar in NS Online. A red dot will display when you have new messages. To set up notifications on your mobile phone, click on Add an address here or click on Notifications from the personal menu in NS Online. ( notifications are not available.) Enter your mobile number, check your messages for a code, and enter the code in the box provided. Check the items for which you wish to be notified. Save the settings.

13 Graded Discussions Your instructor may set the discussions to be graded. After the discussion has been graded, the instructor s comments are displayed on the Grades page along with your score.
