4 III. State three facts about: 1. Three facts about a web portal are: (a) A web portal or simply a portal is a website that acts as a gateway to a broad range of other websites on the Internet. In other words, a portal has a catalogue of other websites. (b) It may also offer various other resources and services like a search engine, , chatting, online shopping, horoscopes, latest news, etc. (c) The first web portal was America Online (AOL). (d) It is the Internet protocol responsible for retrieving and displaying web pages. (e) When an HTTP link is traversed, the browser connects to the appropriate machine, retrieves the document and then closes the connection. (f) The HTTP server tells the browser about the type of document it is sending so that the browser at the client side can display it correctly. 2. Three facts about Internet are: (a) The term Internet is derived from two words: Interconnection and network. (b) It is a network of networks where each network consists of multiple numbers of computers. (c) Computers in a network are connected through cables, wireless or any other media enabling them to communicate and share files and other resources. 3. Three facts about a web server are: (a) The web pages on the Internet are stored on the computers that are connected to the Internet. These computers are known as web servers. (b) Any computer that has a server software installed on it and is connected to the Internet can act as a web server. (c) The web browsers and web servers are linked together using the client/server architecture. 4. Three facts domain name are: (a) A domain name is a unique name that identifies a particular website and represents the name of the server where the web pages reside. (b) They are the human-readable addresses and hence, are easier to remember. (c) Some examples of domain names are and 5. Three facts about SMTP are: (a) SMTP (stands for simple mail transfer protocol) is a TCP/IP application protocol that supports service. (b) It handles transfer of messages between the sender and receiver over the Internet. (c) When a sender sends an , SMTP takes it to the sender's mail server and then transfers it to the receiver's mail server. 6.
