About AXIGEN Mail Server What is AXIGEN Mail Sever? Quick Installation and Configuration Guide Keeping an eye on the current market and end user requirements GECAD Technologies brought its new product AXIGEN Mail Server, with advanced technologies and messaging services. AXIGEN Mail Server is an Internet-based mail server that provides messaging services over the Internet via connections using a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network. AXIGEN Mail Server sends mail messages using the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Messages can be retrieved using the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) and the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and HTTP protocol (HTTP). For remote users AXIGEN offers as a Webmail module. The administration is easily done through a web interface (WebAdmin), Command Line Interface (CLI) or configuration file. AXIGEN MAIL SERVER is specifically designed for use in small businesses, corporate environments or at ISPs. Modular architecture AXIGEN Mail Server works on a modular architecture including current advanced Internet messaging protocols/services. The figure below explains all modules of AXIGEN mail server: Figure 1: AXIGEN modular structure The above figure presents the mail messages flow inside the AXIGEN mail server. The message goes through various modules in the server and gets delivered securely to its destination. 6

AXIGEN components Quick Installation and Configuration Guide Below we can find short descriptions of all AXIGEN Mail Server modules: SMTP Incoming, Processing, SMTP Outgoing, Storage Unit, POP3, IMAP4, Webmail, List Server, Log server, Reporting&Monitoring and Configuration. SMTP Incoming This module is responsible with establishing connections initiated by other entities via SMTP/ESMTP protocols. The module includes functions such as configurable listeners (including TCP rules and IP rules, thread management and client management, user authentication and a built-in SPF authentication procedure). Processing This module receives mail messages from the SMTP Incoming and Webmail modules and delivers them to AXIGEN Storage (for local delivery) and to the SMTP Outgoing module (for external delivery). The SMTP Processing module enables the system administrator to control the mail message queue. SMTP Outgoing This module is responsible for delivering mail messages to remote hosts. The SMTP Outgoing module is using the Domain Name Resolver (DNR) module for mapping domains to IP addresses and provides advanced client management options. Storage Unit AXIGEN Mail Server stores in this storage unit all incoming mails (for local delivery). Then AXIGEN checks the consistency of the messages placed in the storage and empties the queue only if the mail message is correctly stored. Special compacting mechanisms are available for Storage maintenance, in order to make it secure, fast and compact, thus using minimum system resources (including memory and hard disk space). IMAP AXIGEN IMAP module establishes connection with IMAP clients and retrieves mail messages from AXIGEN Storage. It supports secure connections and allows usage of different allow/deny rules via listeners. POP3 AXIGEN POP3 module establishes connection with POP clients and retrieves mail messages from AXIGEN Storage. AXIGEN POP3 module allows usage of different allow/deny rules via listeners. Webmail AXIGEN Webmail establishes connection with the corresponding mail client via a Web browser, sends mail messages to and retrieves mail messages from AXIGEN Storage. List Server AXIGEN offers an integrated list server, that allows you to easily manage mail lists. Log server You can log (internally, remotely or using the system log) the activity of all TCP services available in AXIGEN Mail Server. The logs can be made at different levels of details. Reporting&Monitoring The Reporting additional service can help you generate a server activity reports on the global traffic level. Traffic counters for each modules, and can be viewed via Webadmin. Configuration AXIGEN is delivered with fully functional configuration settings. You can change the mail server s configuration to suit your needs and network specifics using the general server configuration file (called axigen.cfg), the WebAdmin interface, the command line interface (CLI) or the provisioner tool. This Quick Installation and Configuration document presents the installation procedure and the initial configuration steps to be taken using WebAdmin, the recommended configuration option. 12 Installation Steps Quick Installation and Configuration Guide Here are the common steps required when installing the AXIGEN mail server on Linux platforms: Download the required package (select the specific package according to your Linux distribution) or browse the AXIGEN Installation CD. This installation kit contains the evaluation version of AXIGEN Mail Server. Unpack the original installation kit. Use the installation kit provided by our partner or the kit downloaded directly from our website. Unpack it using the standard tar command: Login as root. tar xzvf <install-kit-file> For example, to unpack the AXIGEN RPM package for the i386 architecture, type in the same directory as the file: tar xzvf axigen.i386.rpm.tar.gz Install AXIGEN using the standard package management application, specific to your distribution. For example, in order to install the RPM package, you should use the rpm command, from the same directory as the AXIGEN RPM file: rpm ivh axigen-version.<arch>.rpm For example, to install the rpm version for i386 architecture, the exact command is: rpm ivh axigen i386.rpm Note: Find more information on AXIGEN installation in the INSTALL file of you Installation Kit. Configure AXIGEN: Before starting AXIGEN Mail Server, you should adjust some settings, according to your specific environment (for instance adding the WebAdmin service and enabling the default WebAdmin listener). You can do that via its configuration file, axigen.cfg. For more details, please refer to Chapter 3 in this document. Stop any other mail services (Sendmail, Postfix, IMAPD, Dovecot) or web services (Apache) currently running in your system. If you fail to do that, the corresponding AXIGEN Services will be disabled when first starting AXIGEN. Start the AXIGEN server: To start the server, issue commands specific to your Linux distribution. For instance, under RedHat and SUSE distributions, the AXIGEN server can be started by issuing /etc/init.d/axigen start Create domains/accounts for your AXIGEN installation. For more information about how to create domains/accounts in AXIGEN, please refer to the Creating a Domain Database section of this document. This allows you to specify several locations where to store your domains data. If you wish to store s from all your domains in the same location (domain database), you can skip the domain database creation, as when first starting the AXIGEN Mail Server, one domain database location is created by default. In this case, you can skip to Adding a Domain to an Existing Database. Reload AXIGEN daemon: For applying the changes you have made in axigen.cfg you have to reload the AXIGEN daemon. You can do this by using the initscript with the reload parameter: /etc/init.d/axigen reload 12

Chapter 3: Configure and Work with AXIGEN This chapter provides complete description on how to work with AXIGEN Mail Server. In this chapter Registering a Domain for Use with AXIGEN Setting the AXIGEN Admin Password Enabling and Logging on the Axigen Webadmin Interface Creating a Domain Database Adding a Domain to an Existing Domain Database Adding an Account Connecting ClamAV and SpamAssassin Accessing AXIGEN Webmail Configuring Other Services Advanced Configuration Options Available in Axigen Mail Server Configuring Mail Clients for Use with AXIGEN 13

Setting the AXIGEN Admin Password Quick Installation and Configuration Guide Before accessing the web admin interface it is mandatory to set the password for the AXIGEN admin account. To do that: Step 1: If the AXIGEN server is running, first stop it. /etc/init.d/axigen stop Step 2. Run AXIGEN only with -A (or --admin-passwd) option. Example: Step 3. Restart the server. /opt/axigen/bin/axigen A <password> /etc/init.d/axigen restart Note: Currently you can use this password only with the admin username. 14

Enabling and Logging on the Axigen Webadmin Interface In AXIGEN 1.2, the Webadmin service is enabled by default, so you can directly skip to Step 4 of this procedure. If you re using an older version of AXIGEN, or if you have disabled your Webadmin service and need to enable it again, steps 1-3 explain how to enable it using the configuration file. By default, the WebAdmin module listens to the 9000/tcp port and can be enabled by editing the AXIGEN configuration file (installed by default in the following location: /var/opt/axigen/run/axigen.cfg) and set it as instructed below: Step 1: Add the WebAdmin service to the server{} context: Server { services = (imap log pop3 processing smtp webadmin)... Step 2: In the webadmin {} context, configure and enable the default listener: webadmin = {... listeners = ( { address = :9000 enable = yes... } Step 3: Restart AXIGEN mail server. Step 4: Connect to the WebAdmin interface. Enter in your browser and login using the admin username and the password you have previously set. 15

Figure 2: AXIGEN WebAdmin, the Login page Step 5: If you re accessing the WebAdmin from a different machine, you need to set in the listener's address parameter the IP address of the machine on which AXIGEN is installed. Or, you can set this parameter to " " (in this case, the listener will listen to all machine interfaces). When accessing the AXIGEN Webmail, you need to replace the " " IP from the URL with the IP address of the machine on which the AXIGEN Mail Server is installed. For example, if the machine running AXIGEN has the IP address, change the IP/port data under Server->WebAdmin->Listeners- >Address to match your IP/port. In the config file, edit the corresponding parameter. server { webadmin { listeners = ( { address = :9000 enable = yes Remember to reload your AXIGEN Mail Server after each change in the configuration files. Important! This same situation applies to all other AXIGEN SMTP services: their corresponding listener address parameter is set by default to the local AXIGEN machine address ( ). Make sure you change this setting accordingly if you wish these services to bind to other machine interfaces. Step 6. Check the system log file(s) for confirmation that the WebAdmin service is correctly loaded. The system log file should display a message similar to the one below:...info: WEBADMIN: listener added : SUCCESS: WEBADMIN: started 16

You can now login to WebAdmin. Start your Web browser and enter the IP/port pair you ve configured. In the example set above, the default address is Login using the admin username and the password you ve previously set. 17

Registering a Domain for Use with AXIGEN Quick Installation and Configuration Guide Whether you are setting up a home mail server using a single domain or administering several domains, you need to register each domain name, that is make it valid for use on the Internet. So, before creating any domains in AXIGEN s web configuration interface, you need to make sure you have registered these domains. Let s say you are setting up a home mail server and need to send and receive from your own domain. The steps for registering the domain are as follows: 1. Choose your domain name (i.e your_lastname.us) 2. Register your domain name with a Domain Registrar of your choice (you can search the internet for a Domain Registrar for your country) 3. Now you have two alternatives: Host your own domain server on a local machine Use the DNS hosting service provided by your Domain Registrar (that is, have the Domain Registrar host the domain servers for your new internet zone). This is the recommended option, since you won t be needing to configure the DNS server yourself, which can be quite a complicated task. When registering your domain with the Domain Registrar, it is very important to define the MX (mail exchange) server. This actually consists in defining the actual IPs which will receive s for your newly defined domain). An usual practice is to set up a primary MX server and a secondary MX server for backup in case of failure (this requires two different machines). If you only have one machine available, just set a primary MX server this will need to be the IP of the machine where AXIGEN is installed Creating a Domain Database AXIGEN Mail Server stores domain and account-specific information in domain databases. AXIGEN Mail Server creates one domain database by default when first starting the server. If you wish to store your domain data base in a different location than the default one, or wish to create several domain databases, refer to the procedure described in this section. To add a new domain to an existing domain database, please refer to the Adding a domain to an existing domain database section below. Note: The domain database concept has been introduced in order to make easier the management and storage of domains and accounts (mailboxes). You can store different domain databases in different locations and you can manage (change settings, add new accounts/domains) remotely, via WebAdmin, for instance. Moreover, you can even have different storage locations for the same domain. For more details, please refer to the AXIGEN Mail Server User Manual. To create a domain database, follow the instructions below. 1. Login with the admin user in the WebAdmin interface (see instructions in the Enabling AXIGEN WebAdmin Interface). 2. Create a domain database (ddb file). To do that: o o o Click on the Commands tab Specify the domain data path in the ddb path field and the ddb ID in the ddb id field. Press the Create ddb button. In the example below, a database with ddbid=0 is created under /var/opt/axigen/domains. You can register the data base at the same time, by checking the Register ddb checkbox. 18

Important: If you want to create several domain databases, remember that you cannot have more than one domain database in one location and you cannot have more domain databases with the same ID, while the IDs for domain databases can range in AXIGEN from 0 to 255. So the next domain database should be created, for instance, under /var/opt/axigen/domains1 and should have ddbid=1. Hint: Each time after you've issued different commands in WebAdmin, check for confirmation/error messages in the lower left corner of the page. 3. Alternatively, you can register the domain database(s) at a later time. In the same page, check for the domain db locations area and add the path to the first domain database you want to register. Press the Register ddb button. Figure 3: Registering a domain database in AXGEN WebAdmin Note: If you ve created several domain databases, you can only register them one by one. 4.) In order to save your current configuration, in the same WebAdmin page, click on the "Save config" button. Figure 4: Saving the configuration file in WebAdmin. Important: The domain database information is stored in the axigen.cfg file. If you do not save you configuration file, your domain database(s) will be lost after an eventual restart of AXIGEN Mail Server. Now you ve created the domain database(s) and you can start adding domains as required by your specific needs (for more information, please refer to the Adding a domain to an existing domain database section below). The list of domain databases is displayed in the "domain db locations" area. 19

Figure 5: Viewing the list of domain databases currently registered with AXIGEN. 20

Adding a Domain to an Existing Domain Database Quick Installation and Configuration Guide AXIGEN mail server stores information specific to domains (and accounts) in domain databases. Zou can use the domain database created by default created at first server start and add your first domain to this database. For more details on domain data bases, see Creating a domain database section above. To add a new domain to an existing domain database in AXIGEN Mail Server: Step 1. Click on the "Domains" tab. The WebAdmin Domains page is displayed. Figure 6: WebAdmin Domains page. Step 2. Fill the "Domain name" text box with the domain name you want to create. Please note the name of the domain cannot include special characters. Figure 7: Specifying the domain name. Note: AXIGEN is RFC compliant in terms of characters you can use when creating new domains and/or accounts. Please refer to the relevant RFC standard, Internet message format, available for instance on This procedure continues on the next page. 21

Step 3. Check if you ve specified the correct domain name and if you ve selected the correct domain database in the "Domain db" drop-down box (select the ddb to which you want to add the domain). Figure 8: Selecting the correct domain database to add the domain to. Step 4. Press the "Add new domain" button. Figure 9: Adding a new domain to a domain database. Step 5. After pressing the Add new domain button, a page presenting the default domain properties for the domain you re adding is displayed (see below). Edit the domain-specific parameters to suit your needs or leave them their default values. An in-depth presentation of AXIGEN domain-specific parameters is beyond the purpose of this Quick Installation and Configuration Guide. For more relevant information, please refer to the product s User Manual. Figure 10: The Domain Properties page. This procedure continues on the next page. 22

Step 6. Press the "Update" (lower left corner) button and then the "Commit" button (upper right corner) to save and commit your changes. Figure 11: Committing a change in a domain s properties. Now you ve successfully added the accountancy domain to your domain database with ID=0. You can see the domains currently associated with your domain database using the Domain list page in WebAdmin. This page is displayed when selecting the Domains left tab. Figure 12: Viewing the list of domains added to a specific domain database. Step 7. One last step to go: you should specify the primary domain to be used by AXIGEN Mail Server. Press the Server tab on the left and add the name of your primary domain in the primarydomain editable text box. You should only do this once, after creating your first domain in AXIGEN Mail Server. Figure 13: Specifying the primary domain. 23

Adding an Account To add a new account to an existing domain: 1. In the WebAdmin page click on Accounts tab. 2. Click on the Show Accounts button corresponding to the domain for which you want to display the existing accounts or to add a new account. In the example below, the accounts for the accountancy domain are displayed. Figure 14: Displaying accounts for a specific domain. 3. The existing accounts for the domain you ve selected are displayed. To add a new account to this domain, enter the name of the account to be created in the text box before the Add new account button and then press this button. In this example, an account named laura_white is added to the accountancy domain. Figure 15: Adding a new account to an existing domain. This procedure continues on the next page. 24

4. After pressing on the Add new account button, a page presenting the default account properties for the account you re creating is displayed (see below). Edit the account-specific parameters to suit your needs or leave them with their default values. An in-depth presentation of AXIGEN account-specific parameters is beyond the purpose of this Quick Installation and Configuration Guide. For more relevant information, please refer to the product s User Manual. Figure 16: The Account properties page. 5. Press the "Commit" button (lower left corner) to save and commit your changes. Now you ve successfully added the laura_white account to the accountancy domain. You can see the accounts currently associated with your domains using the Account list page in WebAdmin. This page is displayed when selecting the Accounts left tab (see below). Figure 17: The Account list page. 25

Connecting ClamAV and SpamAssassin Quick Installation and Configuration Guide To make sure your mail traffic is free of viruses or spam, connect the ClamAV Antivirus application and Spamassassin Anti-spam application. AXIGEN implements a proprietary filter scripting language that allows you to implement connectors for any Antivirus and Antispam applications. By default, AXIGEN comes with connectors for ClamAV Antivirus and Spamassasin Anti-spam applications. The instructions below explain how to setup these applications for use with AXIGEN and activate the connectors. Connecting ClamAV This procedure applies to Fedore Core 4. To see instructions for other Linux distributions, please the corresponding AXIGEN forum posting. A. Download ClamAV (daemon), on the same machine on which AXIGEN Mail Server is installed. Follow these steps, in order to configure ClamAv for use with AXIGEN and start the clamd daemon. 1. First, install clamav-server, using yum (Yellow Dog Updater, Modified): yum install clamav-server 2. Copy the sample config file shipped with clamav-server: cp /usr/share/doc/clamav-server-*/clamd.conf /etc/clamd.d/axigen.conf 3. Edit /etc/clamd.d/axigen.conf # comment out the Example line # Example # insert/modify the following lines: LogFile /var/log/clamd.axigen PidFile /var/run/clamd.axigen/clamd.pid LocalSocket /var/run/clamd.axigen/clamd.sock User axigen 4. Create a link to the clamd binary: ln -s /usr/sbin/clamd /usr/sbin/clamd.axigen 5. Create the run directory, where the PID file and clamd socket will be stored, and change its permissions: mkdir -p /var/run/clamd.axigen chown axigen:axigen /var/run/clamd.axigen 6. Create and setup the initscript: cp /usr/share/doc/clamav-server-*/clamd.init /etc/init.d/clamd.axigen chmod 755 /etc/init.d/clamd.axigen /sbin/chkconfig clamd.axigen on 26

7. Edit /etc/init.d/clamd.axigen and modify the following lines, as specified below: # description: The clamd server running for axigen CLAMD_SERVICE=axigen 8. Finally, start the clamd daemon: /etc/init.d/clamd.axigen B. Configure AXIGEN anti-virus filter at server level using WebAdmin (these instructions are platformindependent) 1. Add the ClamAV filter. To do this, go through the following steps: In the Server tab, go to Filters page and then to Socket Filters page. Click on the Add new filter button. Figure 18: Adding ClamAV connector Fill out the fields in the window displayed. The Name field represents the name of the filter. The Address field depends on how clamd is configured. You can use either a TCP or a local socket, and you must enter the address accordingly: for a local socket: local://path_to_local_socket for a TCP socket: inet://ip.ad.dr.ess:port The Protocol file field must contain the system full path to the ClamAV AFSL (AXIGEN Filters Scripting Language) file, by default /var/opt/axigen/filters/clam-av.afsl. The Idle timeout field represents the inactivity timeout on connection. The Action on match field defines the action to be taken in case the filter matches an (this can have a value of pass, discard or reject). Note: For antivirus and Anti-spam filters, the reject action should not be used, and is known to be a bad practice, as it will cause a significant traffic growth. The Max. connections field will set the maximum number of connections to the specified filter. Example of configuration: name = clamav address = local:///var/run/clamav/clamd.sock protocolfile = /var/opt/axigen/filters/clam-av.afsl idletimeout = 60 27

actiononmatch = discard maxconnections = 10 Quick Installation and Configuration Guide At the end, press the Add button, then the Commit button and, as specified, once again on the Commit button. Go to Commands tab and click Save config to save the new configuration. 2. Enable this filter for all incoming and outgoing mails: In the Server tab, go to Filters page and then to Active Filters page. Click on the Add new filter button. Fill out the fields in the new window displayed. In the Priority field, enter a priority between 0 and 500 (a filter with priority 0 will be applied first and the one with 500, last). Please note that the domain-level filters have the priority limited to range and the user-level filters are limited to the range. A value of "10" should be fine, leaving you space to apply some other future filter before this one. After setting the filter priority, select the socket value from in the Filter type dropdown list and the clamav value from the FilterName list. In the Apply on relay dropdown list, select the yes option, to apply the filter only on outgoing mails. To make sure you scan both incoming and outgoing mails, you have to create two entries for the same filter, one with this option set to no and another one with the option set to yes. In AXIGEN, it is also possible to enable filters at domain and user level, in the corresponding Webadmin tabs. The filters activated at server level, will be automatically applied for all domains and accounts. However, you have the possibility to add additional filters at domain or account level. Connecting SpamAssassin A. Install SpamAssassin using the yum application: yum install spamassassin No further configurations are necessary. B. Configure SpamAssassin at server level, using Webadmin. The connector for SpamAssassin is a socket filter for AXIGEN, so the configuration procedure is the same as for ClamAV, described in the above section. The difference would be that for SpamAssassin, a TCP socket is more likely to be used. The data for SpamAssassin to use in this procedure is: Default address: inet:// :783 Default Protocol File Name: /var/opt/axigen/filters/spamassassin.afsl Thus, a typical configuration would involve the following values: name = spamassassin address = inet:// :783 protocolfile = /var/opt/axigen/filters/spamassassin.afsl idletimeout = 60 actiononmatch = discard maxconnections = 10 Also, when activating the SpamAssassin filter, you need to keep in mind the following: Enter a different priority value for the SpamAssasin filter (if you have chosen 10 for ClamAV, choose a higher value for SpamAssassin in order to apply this filter after ClamAV in the filtering chain) Select the corresponding filter name, spamassassin in the Filter name list 28

Accessing AXIGEN Webmail Now that your mail server is fully functional, you can access Webmail to send and receive test messages. Webmail can be accessed at the default address: Use one of the accounts created using the procedure in Adding an Account to an Existing Database, to log on to AXIGEN Webmail. Enter the full address in the username field. Configuring Other Services Figure 19: Webmail Login Page You can enable the Webmail module from the "Server" tab. Make sure you also configure the "Listeners" from the "Webmail" tab so that Webmail can be accessed via this IP/port address. Important: There is one "Listeners" tab for each AXIGEN service. Make sure you configure correctly the listeners for each service you want to run. At a minimum, you should configure the Listeners at least for the "SMTP-In", "POP3", "Webmail" services, using corresponding IP/port addresses. ***** Now you have successfully installed AXIGEN Mail Server and created a domain database to which you ve added a new domain and a new account. This completes your quick installation and configuration training. Your AXIGEN Mail Server is currently functional. 29
