3 deployment. For information on how MMB3 results differ from deployment and configuration information refer to the on Benchmark vs. Production Configuration Disclosure Note section. Test conducted by Dell Performance Analysis Lab using Microsoft Exchange Load Simulator Tool in February Dell PowerEdge 1850 Space-conscious, Expandable Performance Delivering intense power and redundancy in a rack dense format, the PowerEdge 1850 server is designed to maximize computing power per square foot. In fact, as many as 42 servers can occupy less than seven square feet of data center floor space helping to enable less expensive overhead and room to grow. As a result, the PowerEdge 1850 server offers an exceptional solution for technology refreshes as well as new technology deployments. With two Intel Xeon processors and an 800MHz Front Side Bus, the PowerEdge 1850 system is designed to provide high speed data processing. Plus, the server offers up to 12GB of DDR2 memory for memory intensive applications. It also includes Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) to enable continued utilization of existing 32-bit technology with the capacity to incorporate 64-bit operating systems and applications in the future. With support for PCI Express architecture, the PowerEdge 1850 delivers next generation I/O throughput for future high throughput peripherals. Uncompromising Availability In spite of its small size, the PowerEdge 1850 server is rich in high availability features. It includes hot-plug hard drives that allow you to remove and replace drives while the server is operating with a RAID controller. You can add the redundant power supply option without occupying the dual PCI slots, allowing you to retain expandability without compromising redundancy. It also provides redundant cooling fans, Memory Mirroring and redundant Network Interface Controllers. What s more, the PowerEdge 1850 server supports High Availability Clustering and Storage Area Networks so that you can scale your external storage with high availability. Manageability The PowerEdge 1850 system delivers optimum functionality with advanced, easy-touse manageability features. Its SCSI hard drive carrier is compatible with all eighth generation PowerEdge rack and tower servers for enhanced data interoperability and to help minimize operational costs. Additionally, it shares common BIOS and drives with the PowerEdge 2800 and 2850 servers making it easy to perform software upgrades and maintenance while helping to reduce Total Cost of Ownership ail&pgn=e89f69c6-a6e6-fd ea236e Page 3 of 22

5 1 Benchmark vs. Production Configuration Disclosure Note This test measures the messaging throughput of a single server, single site topology. Its purpose is to measure the maximum throughput of a Microsoft Exchange Server on this hardware configuration. This can provide a benchmark for comparing hardware and/or software products, but cannot be used as a deployment guide for production environments. For deployment specific information contact a Microsoft or Dell representative. The MMB3 benchmark does not account for: Usage profiles not matching that of the Load Simulator MMB3 profile; Per user storage, and per server backup requirements; Fault tolerance requirements; Anti-virus processes and effects on the server; UBE/UCE (spam) mail flow; Workloads other than MAPI private folder access. This includes Public Folder, NNTP, POP3 and other interfaces; Multiple Exchange Server deployments, where additional resources are required to forward mail intra-site; Connectors, Links and Replication to remote Exchange sites; Network topologies, bandwidth availability, latency requirement and SLA related factors like QOS and fail-over path issues; Page 5 of 22
6 2 Test Results The new MAPI Messaging Benchmark (MMB3) measures throughput in terms of a specific profile of user actions, executed over an 8 hour working day. This benchmark is different from the MMB2 setting that was used with Exchange 2000 in that the rate of client requests is significantly greater for the MMB3 profile.
