4 What are the supported operating systems for Dell OpenManage Printer Manager version 1.0? Windows 2000 (Professional, Server, Advanced Server) Windows 2003 (Standard, Enterprise, and Web) Windows XP (Professional) with Service Pack (SP) 2 and above. What are the recommended hardware specifications for OpenManage Printer Manager version 1.0? Full Installation (Application Server with Client): Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz CPU 2GB RAM 20GB available disk space Client only: Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz CPU 1GB RAM (512 MB minimum, 1GB for optimum performance) 1GB available disk space How do I restart a printer using OpenManage Printer Manager? 1) Right-click a printer in Printer Manager. 2) Select Restart Printer from the menu. How do I create Temporary Printer Groups? 1) Use <Ctrl> + Right-Click to select multiple printers from the Printer Manager to create a temporary group. 2) Click Group Op in the menu bar. This option lets you select a group operation to execute against those selected printers. Currently only a single operation is available: Copy Printer Attributes. If you want to run the operation against a predefined group then start from the Group Operations manager. How do I create Dynamic Printer Groups? You can use the Groups Manager to create dynamic groups. Essentially, these groups are filters that let you select a group of printers to edit based on their location, type, age, vendor, and so on. See Groups in the Open Manage Printer Manager User Guide for more information. How do I use Group Operations Manager with Printer Groups? You can use the printer groups you create in conjunction with the Group Operations Manager to configure multiple printers. 1) Open the Group Operations manager. 2) Select Printer Group Operations > Global > Copy Printer Attributes. 5 3) In the next window, add the IP address of the source printer or select one by clicking the command button (...). This is the Source Printer whose attribute settings you want to copy to your target group. 4) Select the attributes you want to copy. 5) Initiate the mass configuration with this feature. See Printer Group Operations in the User Guide for more information. How do I view the Windows Print Queue? You can launch the operating system print queue display that shows jobs in progress on a printer with the Print Queue details screen. If this screen does not appear in the Printer Details panel, there are two ways to view it: Misc Screen View the Print Queue details from the Misc page (refer to Misc in the User Guide). Printer Details Panel 1) Click plus (+) in the upper right corner of the Printer Details panel. 2) Add it to the details screen display. 3) Click Edit to enter the print server (use a hostname or IP address preceded by a double backslash in Windows). 4) Click Apply to accept edits. 5) After you have configured the print server, click Launch... The operating system s print queue window opens. PAGE 5 OF 8

6 What does the Delete / Decommission Printer / Stop Printer Polling do? These options do the following: Delete - Completely and permanently removes the printer and all data from the database. Decommission Printer - Stops any polling, heartbeat, and thresholding related to the selected printer(s). This keeps any collected data for future reports. To recommission a printer, you must rediscover it. See the User Guide for more information about decommissioning. Stop Printer Polling - Stops polling and data collection on a printer. This option is useful when your printer is being repaired. Access these options by right-clicking a selected printer, or by clicking the Action button in Printer Manager. How do I remove a printer from Inventory? To remove a printer or discovered device from inventory, right-click it in the printer management screen, and click Delete. You can also stop reporting about a printer without deleting it if you click Decommission. How do I access the application from the Web? You can access this application (assuming you have network access to the application server) by putting the following URL in your browser: server name or IP address]. How do I order consumables using OpenManage Printer Manager? Screens describing (toner, paper, fuser) consumables appear in the Printer Manager. The Status page that appears in the Details panel (or when you open a printer) contains a link to the order Web page at Dell. See Printer Consumables Summary Report in the User Guide for more information. How do I print a test page? Right-click a printer and select Print Test Page to print a test page. How do I map and access a printer? In addition to a list display of printers, Printer Manager lets you display your printers in a logical topology (with a background map). To see information about a printer in this display: 1) Right-click the printer in Printer Manager. 2) Select Open. To access the printer s HTTP (Web) page, right-click the printer in Printer Manager and select Direct Access. See Topology in the User Guide for more information. How do I create a new report? To create a report: 1) Locate the report in Inventory Reports, described in Reports of the User Guide. 2) Select the report. PAGE 6 OF 8

7 3) Click Execute. The report appears. You can print, customize, or archive the report. See the User Guide for more about customizing the reports. The User Guide also describes available canned reports. These include the following: Printer Asset Report - Describes the model, IP address, name, age, print volume and status for your existing, discovered inventory of printers. Printer Configuration Summary Report Describes the settings and values displayed depending on the capabilities of the printers. Printer Consumables Summary Reports Displays five quarters of data about the selected printers. Printer Consumables Calculated Life Describes the individual consumables that appear with the percentage used in printing the detected volume of printed pages and a calculated remaining replacement time frame. The Calculated Life report contains a link to help you order consumables that are running out. Printer Service Report Summary Summarizes logged service activities for the selected equipment for the last month, quarter and day in three separate reports. For all reports about data and duration, you must activate printer polling or thresholds. What are the non-dell printers supported by OpenManage Printer Manager (OMPM)? Printer Manager uses a generic template to discover non-dell printers and allows you to manage non-dell printers to varying degrees. The level of support is determined by how closely the discovered device complies with RFC 1759 & Out of the box OMPM will use a generic template for discovered non-dell printers. However, Dell also provides custom printer templates that extend Printer Manager capability to manage selected popular non-dell printer models. Dell constantly expands the non-dell printer supported list and makes such printer templates available for download on the Dell support website. What is a printer template? A printer template provides a means of getting printer configuration data into a standard format. It does this by providing a method of mapping a desired value in OpenManage Printer Manager (OMPM) to a specific protocol and location in the device s firmware. In addition the template can provide two-way translation of values between OMPM and the printer. Templates are most similar to a configuration file and do not contain any program code. Additional (or updated) templates can be downloaded as they become available and added into OMPM to enhance its operations without even stopping the server. Although templates can share some values, a template is generally targeted at a specific printer model. What are the types of templates? Default Template - The default template provides mappings based on industry standards specified in RFC 1759 and RFC Printers that follow these standards will be discovered and provide some level of status monitoring. The degree to which these standards are followed determines the extent of compatibility. Basic Template - Basic template addresses fields that are considered most central to management of printer resources including name, configuration, identification, display, hardware, network, SNMP, tray status, and toners. The template maps these fields to the extent the device is capable of responding to help ensure this data is available, even if the PAGE 7 OF 8

8 printer is not following the industry standards. Most fields in a basic template provide monitoring only. Extended Template - An extended template provides support beyond a basic template. The amount of additional support is determined by the specific needs that were being addressed by the template. Extended templates may include additional mappings. Full Template - A full template provides the maximum level of support possible. Every Printer Manager field that can be supported by the device is mapped. All Dell models are supported by a Full Template. How can I get more templates? Navigate to the Dell support website to check for availability of new printer templates on a regular basis. Register printer templates before using them. For more information about registering a printer template, refer to Printer Template Updates in the User Guide. How do I express interest or feedback for a template? Send an to ompm_feedback@dell.com to submit ideas for a new printer template. Dell reserves the right to prioritize and determine when these printer templates become available (based on collective requests and popular demand). How do I install printer templates? For more information about installing a printer template, refer to Printer Template Updates in the User Guide. I forgot the password to the Admin login. How do I reset the password? 1) Log in using the OWAdmin user name without a password. 2) Go to the User Manager to change/reset the password. If you removed the OWAdmin user from your users, you need to re-install the application. How do I restart the server application? To restart the server: 1) Go to the system tray and right-click the Server Monitor icon (. 2) Select Stop. Wait for the icon to turn red. 3) Right-click the Server Monitor icon again. 4) Select Start. PAGE 8 OF 8
