What is the National Do Not Call Registry? The National Do Not Call Registry (DNC) was created in 2003 for the purpose of offering American consumers the option to limit the number of sales calls they receive. This registry applies to residential telephones only, not business telephone numbers. What is a SAN number? A Subscription Account Number (SAN) registers your company as a telemarketer. The SAN allows your company access to those who have chosen not to receive telemarketing calls so that those records can be removed from your calling lists, keeping your company compliant (and fine free) with government regulatory bodies who supervise telemarketing campaigns. What if I don t get a SAN number? The implications of not obtaining a SAN number are many, not the least of which is that a reputable outbound call center, like AnswerNet, will not work with you. Plus, if your business calls the residential telephone of someone with whom you have NOT done business for a minimum of 18 months, and that person has been on the DNC list for 32 days, you can be fined up to $16, per instance. 4 An information page will appear. Read it, and scroll down, and complete this form: NOTE: Select Seller as your organization function. 5 When the entire form is complete, select Submit. You will be asked to verify the information. When the information has been verified and accepted, select Create Profile at the bottom of the page. A Certification page will appear. On that page you will need to agree to the FTC s terms and conditions. Click Yes, and then Certify. Once you have accepted the terms and conditions, a page will appear containing your Organization ID, Representative Password (used to access the system) and Download Password (used to retrieve your newly cleaned list). Print the page and keep it for your records. 6 Now click You may now Manage and Renew Subscriptions. This screen will appear: Enter the Organization ID that you received on the previous page and the Representative Password. (Click on the round radio button next to Representative). You should now have access to the system. Now that you are logged in, locate Order Area Codes for your Current Subscription and click on the link. 7 You may select up to 5 area codes without incurring any charges. For more than 5 area codes, each additional area code is $62. After selecting your area codes, click Continue. Confirm that these are the area codes that you want. Click Continue again. Your subscription is now complete. Print the page for your records. Your company now has a Subscription Account Number (SAN) and can obtain lists from a reputable vendor at your convenience. There will be similar instructions for the state regulators, depending on which states you have chosen for your campaign. With the creation of the National DNC, many states have discontinued the state based programs and merged with the National registry. You will need to verify that this is the case for your state. The following list will provide you with the most recent information about the criteria by state.
