2 Introduction/Welcome Message In this hands-on session we will cover more advanced 2E topics. The main focus is how to enhance your 2E model to take advantage of Templates, but we will also cover other items like building a permanent notepad, building spreadsheets, , and visualizing your database schema in Visio. 2

8 Creating 2E Templates o Why Create Templates? Templates in 2E allow us to re-use not only device designs, but code in functions. Ensures that custom device designs are consistent across the model. Ensures that common code is used, and is consistent across the model. 8

9 Creating 2E Templates o There are two types of Templates o Device Templates Device templates are used to produce custom screens/reports that can be used throughout our model. The look and feel of the header footer section of the device design can be changed from the standard 2E default. o Function Templates Function templates are used to include the most common code in our functions. Examples would be reloading a subfile, common subfile options, or common function keys. 9

12 Device User Source o As we already know functions can use user source to enhance what the function can perform. o The same can be done with the device design to extend what 2E will generate by default. o Excellent examples of this are Window Titles, enhancing input fields on 5250 displays, and edit masks. 12

15 Adding Multiple Records o In many cases, if not all cases, it s rare to be adding just one record to a database at a time. o The default behavior of the Edit Record function is to exit after the record has been added. o However, we can modify this function slightly so that it will not exit until we use the F3 function key to exit. This is achieved with a few lines of action diagram code, and no modification of the generated code is necessary. 15

18 Creating a Permanent 2E Notepad o 2E provides a function called *NOTEPAD to act as the default notepad. o This does have an annoying limitation. This notepad cannot be saved. So when you exit your functions your notepad is lost. 18

19 Creating a Permanent 2E Notepad o There is a way however to create a permanent notepad. o This has a few advantages. This notepad can be saved when you exit your functions. Can be used as a place to hold code Snippets. Can be used to share code across developers. 19

22 Using the 2E Pre-processor o Sometimes it s necessary to change the source 2E generates before the program is compiled. o This is possible using the 2E supplied pre-processor. o Takes advantage of the YSCNRPLSRC command to find a line of code and replace it with another. o Also excellent for adding lines of code that would not normally be there by the use of copybooks. 22

26 Send from IBM i o IBM i (at version 6.1 and above), has the ability to send on it s own. o No longer is a 3 rd party product, or something like Java Mail required to send . o This is accomplished through the SNDSMTPEMM command. o can be sent to up to 20 recipients. o s can include multiple attachments. o Plain text and HTML s can be sent. 26

30 Send from IBM i o User profile sending the MUST be enrolled in the system distribution directory. o SMTP server must be configured to perform mail routing. o It not possible to change the sending address as an anti-spam precaution. o Works well with IBM s supplied QCAPCMD API. (I ll show an example.) 30

33 Creating Spreadsheets o In many cases a report of data is not only requested, but a spreadsheet with data is required. o Due to RPG s support of calling Java Methods, we can create functions that allow us to create real Excel spreadsheets. This is NOT a simple.csv file that can be imported into excel. o This is accomplished using open-source POI software from Apache, and utility programs provided by Scott Klement. (formally of Klement sausage fame!) 33

36 Using CM Freedom to document your database o CM Freedom allows you to document your 2E database to a Microsoft Visio document. o Can be configured to show different levels of detail. o Can document one database table or your whole model if required. o Software supported and Maintained by CM First. 36
