CODE OF CONDUCT AND ETHICS Staff members must dress appropriately every day; students who do not dress appropriately will not be allowed to go off campus for errands. Whenever a student is working as a staff member, whether on or off campus, he or she is acting as an official representative of Maclay School and the yearbook staff and is expected to act responsibly at all times. To ensure accuracy and for common courtesy, when staff members are collecting information for articles or captions, please repeat the notes to the person being interviewed and have him or her sign the notes. Staff members will report promptly to class each day and will remain in the classroom. Staff members will be responsible for knowing what is in the Student Handbook and must adhere to all school policies. Any student who needs to leave the classroom on staff business will inform Mrs. Mayer (or substitute), sign the check out sheet (when applicable) accurately, and sign back in. Staff members will not offer pictures that belong to the staff to anyone without permission of the adviser. Use of yearbook photos on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media is forbidden. COMPUTERS Students should treat the equipment in the classroom as if it belonged to them. Any student who misuses a camera, computer, or other equipment will face expulsion from the staff, will be taken to the honor council, and will be held responsible for its replacement. No food or drink is permitted around the computers. Students should save all their work on school s network designated for the yearbook. S: drive> Publications> Yearbook> Marauder 2013> Staff should log off/shut down the computers at the end of the class period. NOTE: When A/D Block is last yearbook class of the day, staff members should shut down. Clean up around the computer; pencils, pens, notes, etc. 1
CAMERAS Each photographer will be assigned a camera for the year. It is the photographer s responsibility to use that camera and keep it with him or her and use it accordingly. Any misuse of it will be noted and if necessary a replacement at student expense will be required. Staff members must sign in and out the cameras assigned for general staff use. Unless other arrangements have been made with the adviser or photo editor, cameras checked out for an evening shoot, should not be left in your cars overnight and should be returned before school starts the next day. Batteries should be placed in the chargers. Pictures should be uploaded in a timely manner and with proper identification - folder ID>Event ID>Photographer s last name). Two cameras with sports lenses will be available for check out for anyone who has been trained to use them. TELEPHONES Personal phones should not be used in the classroom without permission. Keep them in your cubbies. School policy dictates that anyone caught texting or telephoning another student during class will have his/her telephone confiscated. If you use are offering your cell phone number as a call back for parents, merchants, you should avoid unusual or inappropriate voic s. Students should not text or telephone teachers who are conducting classes. Please wait until between classes, a study hall, break, lunch, or before or after school to speak with faculty and staff. Texting teachers is not acceptable for a yearbook assignment. Texting students while in class is not acceptable. When making a telephone call, in order to reduce the number of verbal pauses (Uhh), know what you plan to say before you pick up the telephone and always identify yourself and be pleasant. Tone of voice is important. PLEASE and THANK YOU will make people feel better about helping you. Much like your voice on the telephone, an has a tone. EVERY should contain the words PLEASE and THANK YOU. Students should review and use the information available on the Netiquette handout. You may use the to set up appointments for interviews and to acquire information, but you must always conduct one-on-one interviews when writing copy and captions. 2
Teachers, staff, and administrators, contrary to popular belief, are very busy people; you must give them time to reply to your request. If you do not get an answer after a few days, you must go see them one-on-one. Use proper English and grammar when writing s. No abbreviations. This is not texting. SOCIAL MEDIA 1. Video, sound, and photo sharing 2. Social Networking 3. Blogs, Wikis, and Micro-blogging 4. Social bookmarking tools 5. Production and presentation tools 6. Texting 7. Web conferencing Social Network Usage 1. Maclay School employees are not to be friends, followers, or otherwise directly interact with any students of Maclay School via Facebook or similar social networking sites. 2. Once students have graduated, there is no restriction on interactions between employees and former students on the internet. 3. If a teacher uses a blog, wiki, or other form of public web site not hosted by Maclay School, all student-teacher interaction on that site must be publicly viewable without a password. 1. All non-public electronic communication between employees and students must be done using their school accounts. 2. Employees are not to students at non-maclay addresses and are not to use any account besides their official Maclay School address to contact students. Text Messaging 1. The only context in which text messaging is permitted between employees and students is that of a field trip or off-campus activity. 2. In order for teachers to exchange text messages with students, they must request the student s phone number on the permission slip for the event and include a note explaining the reason for collecting the phone number. 3
Smart phones, texting guidelines (curricular use, field trips, emergency contact, etc) 1. Academic use of smart phones and tablets is permitted within the classroom at the discretion of the teacher. a. Acceptable uses and situations in which the devices may be used are to be delineated by the teacher in the policy sheet for the class. b. Under no circumstances may a student use his or her electronic device for phone calls during class. 2. A student found using an electronic device during an unacceptable time or in an unacceptable manner will have it immediately confiscated. Though Facebook is an amazing social and communication tools, it should be used with good taste. It should NEVER be used to conduct yearbook business (including messages*) nor should you post messages or pictures of yourself or your friends in situations that could be misinterpreted by others. The Marauder yearbook Facebook page should be used only to communicate official yearbook business. Please keep in mind that not everyone has a Facebook account or uses it on a regular basis. G-4 PUB ROOM Everyone has been assigned a cubby. These should be kept as clutter free as possible. They are for communication purposes; they are not for storage. Students who need to leave messages for others can leave them in the cubby, but you won t be able to find your messages if it is cluttered. Hand written notes that pertain to pages should be kept in the file cabinet drawer located in the back of the room labeled Page Files; appropriate page files for each dps can be found in the file cabinet drawer. There are two file cabinets in the back of the room designated for daily yearbook use. All others are off limits. The candy jar is open for staff members only. It is not there for you to take candy to your friends. Popcorn makes a great snack, but if you make it, you clean it up. You are welcome to use the microwave and refrigerator but please ask first and Always CLEAN UP YOUR MESS 4
BE NICE / BE CIVIL Civility politeness, courtesy. Everything you learned in kindergarten! Sarcasm no matter how innocent is not acceptable. Good deeds will be assigned to anyone exhibiting rude behavior or making unkind or sarcastic remarks. Good Deeds: washing desks, dusting computers, empting trash cans, cleaning white boards. REWARDS will be given to those who practice RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS. 5
