This course provides an introduction to computer concepts and an overview of microcomputer applications including variations of Microsoft Windows (operating system), Microsoft Office (productivity suite), Microsoft Word (word processor; part of Office), Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet processor; part of Office), possibly Microsoft Access (database system; part of Office), and Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation system; part of Office). We will use Microsoft Office 2016 for this course. The course is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 Windows 8.1 Windows 10 Microsoft Office 365. The first few chapters of the text explain computers, operating systems and use of the Internet. There are 4 major Modules in the course: Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. SOFTWARE When you buy a PC Windows computer today for personal use, it will be pre-installed with the Windows 10 operating system. However, many companies or industries today are using the older Microsoft Windows 7 or 8.1. Many commercial systems running on networks are using Microsoft Office 365. The text is designed to be compatible with Microsoft Office 365. For information on Office 365, see the Appendix (pages ) at the end of the text. Office 365 is sold by subscription and is guaranteed to provide the latest version of the Office programs (currently Office 2016). Office 365 is a set of software and files that is managed automatically by Microsoft in a cloud. The cloud is a group of computers used by Microsoft that the individual user cannot manipulate. The applications in Office 365 are updated automatically as they are upgraded by Microsoft. While companies often subscribe to Office 365, you are likely to use Office 2016 directly under Windows 10 at home. This is fine. For information on Windows 10, see the book New Perspectives Microsoft Windows 10 by Ruffolo, ISBN Many computers in industry today use Microsoft Office 2013 or Office The differences between these versions of Office are minimal, and you can use either Office 2013 or 2016 to do the Projects in the course, although Office 2016, together with Microsoft Office 365, is strongly preferred. Some features in Office 2016 do not exist in Page2 2
Office 2010 or 2013 (such as colors and themes). In the assignments, you may use a reasonable substitute in Office 2013 for a feature that appears only in Office Together with the book used for Readings, you will use the SAM (Skills Assessment Manager) web-based system for Training, Projects and Exams. You will buy a combination of the custom book and the SAM program. The table at the end of this brochure indicates the readings assigned from the book and the dates that assignments are available and due. There are 3 types of assignments, which you access via SAM: Training. These are Optional, but can be used to receive Extra Credit on your final exam grade, gain skills in Microsoft applications, and prepare for exams. Once a training assignment has been made available according to the SAM calendar, it remains available through Wednesday, December 13. Projects. These are and have definite available dates and due dates and are available for submission at any time during a 2-week or longer period. They will be accepted late for up to two weeks past the due date, with a 1-point penalty for every day of lateness after the due date. They will be graded by SAM and the grades will be available starting the day after the due date. Exams. These are and consist of two types of questions. One type asks you to simulate an application similar to the Training questions. The second type are multiple-choice questions. The answers to the multiple-choice questions may be found in the textbook. Use the index of the textbook to look up the topic of the multiple-choice question and locate the answer. There are 4 exams: Exam Subject Date Start Time End Time WORD Sept 26 12:15PM 2:15PM EXCEL Nov 7 12:15PM 2:15PM ACCESS Dec 5 12:15PM 2:15PM FINAL EXAM (EXCEL, ACCESS and POWERPOINT) TO BE SCHEDULED BY THE REGISTRAR BETWEEN 12/14 AND 12/20 8:30PM 10:30PM Page3 3
You can take the exams online at any location, but you MUST take them at the times specified. There are no make-ups except in emergencies. Let me know within the first week if there is a legitimate reason that you cannot take an exam at the appropriate time. Note that all the exams (except the Final) are during Tuesday Common Hours, so there should be no class conflict with an exam. The final exam has not been scheduled yet, but will be scheduled at the time that the final for the course is scheduled by the Brooklyn College Registrar. This is usually at night from 8:30PM - 10:30PM on one of the weeknights between December 14 and December 20. I will let you know as soon as the Registrar schedules the Final Exam for this course. It will be on a single, specific night to be determined. The Final Exam will cover the applications EXCEL, ACCESS and POWERPOINT. You may use your textbook during the exams (including on the Final), but the rest of SAM will not be available to you at the exams. The grades on the exams will be available to you the day after each exam. However, although you can use the Office 2013 programs, you must use the custom Office 2016 book. All assignments come from SAM, which is coordinated with the custom 2016 book. The book/sam combination can be ordered by accessing the site directly from the publisher. Below, we discuss how to install SAM once it has been delivered to you. You may use computers in the Brooklyn College Library, Library Café or in the West End Computer Lab (near Ocean Avenue) for this course. The West End Lab contains Microsoft Office You may also use your personal computer or, with permission of your employer, a computer at work. Some older PC computers are still using the old Windows XP operating system and the old Office 2003 or Office 2007 or Office 2010 set of applications. You may NOT use those systems. You may use a Mac computer running Office 2016, but you may be penalized if you use a feature that differs from the PC version significantly. Some assignments indicate that they are not specified for Macs. You can use approximations of colors or themes specified in the assignment instructions if you do the assignment on a Mac. To repeat: You may NOT use Office 2003 nor Office 2007 nor Office 2010 for this course, nor may you use Windows XP nor Windows Vista. On a Mac, you may not use any version of Office except Office You may use Office 2013 on a PC to do Projects, although Office 2016 is preferred. Blackboard is NOT being used for this course. 20 STUDY AND ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE Although this course does not have formal meetings, you should expect to invest sufficient time to both learn the material and do the assignments. Students should prepare to spend at least 3-6 hours weekly on this material. If you do not have enough time, do not take the course. Do not kid yourself! Each of the major areas of study (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) are covered by two or more "Modules" in the textbook. Each Module is designed to be read while sitting in front of the computer. By following along with the Module project, you will learn many features of the application. After reading the chapter and completing the Modules along with the book, you are to do the assignment listed in the schedule below. You do not have to submit the Modules themselves. You are expected to read the assigned pages in the book and do the Modules in the text in front of a computer before attempting the assignment. If you do not do the Modules as you read the book, you will learn very little. The readings are listed in the schedule below. Plan to spend significant time each week working on assignments. Each assignment is specified in SAM. Any assignment received after midnight of its due date will be penalized 1% for each day after the due date. However, no assignment will be accepted later than two weeks after the due date or after Dec. 13, whichever is earlier. No materials except for the Final Exam will be accepted after Dec.13. Make sure your name and homework number appear in the subject line of any communication to me via (tbaum@sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu) in the format given above. Often the subject line is garbled in transmission. Do not use a special character, like a quote or a hyphen, in your subject line. Make sure your name appears in every submission via SAM. You MUST keep a copy of every assignment you submit. If I misfile an assignment, or it is misdirected, I may ask you to forward me the original assignment submission. 22 COURSE POLICIES Student Conduct Any acts of disruption that go beyond the normal rights of students to question and discuss with instructors the subject content will not be tolerated, in accordance with the Academic Code of Conduct described in the Student Handbook. Electronic Devices Policy Cellular telephones, pagers, CD or DVD players, radios, and similar devices are prohibited during examinations, unless specified. Please note that the exams are open-book, but only the hardcopy book or a copy is allowed in the room. If you have an online copy of the book, you cannot use it during the final with an electronic device. Print out those sections of the book you think you might need, and bring the printout to the exam. It is strongly advised that you purchase or rent a hard copy of the text. Incomplete Policy Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound, documented reason for omitting submission of material. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing and must have completed a significant portion of the course. Students absent from the final will receive an INC grade if they receive permission in advance, or in cases of emergency only. Otherwise, the grade will be F. A makeup final or completion of work in the case of an INC grade is only allowable up to a specified date in the following semester. Cheating Policy Students are expected to uphold the school s standard of conduct relating to academic honesty. Students assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. The guiding principle of academic integrity shall be that a student's submitted work, examinations, reports, and projects must be the student's own. Students shall be guilty of violating the college s policy if they: 1. Represent the work of others as their own. 2. Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic work. 3. Give unauthorized assistance to other students. 4. Modify, without instructor approval, an examination, paper, record, or report for the purpose of obtaining additional credit. 5. Misrepresent the content of submitted work. Students may study together but may not work together on a specific assignment. Page22 22
This means that if you cheat on a test or an assignment, I must file a report which may initiate academic penalties. Any student violating the college s academic integrity policy is subject to receive a failing grade for the course and will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs. If a student is unclear about whether a particular situation may constitute violation, the student should meet with the instructor to discuss the situation. For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not "work together" on graded assignments. Such collaboration constitutes cheating. A student may not use or copy (by any means) another's work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own. If you need help on an assignment, contact your instructor, not other classmates. DISABILITIES POLICY Brooklyn College Policy on Academic Integrity The faculty and administration of Brooklyn College support an environment free from cheating and plagiarism. Each student is responsible for being aware of what constitutes cheating and plagiarism and for avoiding both. The complete text of the CUNY Academic Integrity Policy and the Brooklyn College procedure for implementing that policy can be found at this site: If a faculty member suspects a violation of academic integrity and, upon investigation, confirms that violation, or if the student admits the violation, the faculty member MUST report the violation. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), qualified students enrolled in this course are entitled to reasonable accommodations. Please contact the College Disabilities Office to see if you are entitled to an accommodation. The instructor is not permitted to allow accommodations not afforded to other students, except through certification by the Disabilities Office. Page23 23
Schedule of Assignments & Examinations Spring 2017 All assignments are to be submitted and done via SAM. See the SAM Student Manual for information on how to use SAM. The Reading assignments are listed below and should be read for the textbook, and followed along on the computer. This is optional but strongly recommended. For each day late(after the due date) you submit a project, you lose 1 point. Projects. are not accepted at all past two weeks after the due date. (However the PowerPoint Project is due on 12/12 but will be accepted only until 12//13.) No assignment (including training or extra credit) is accepted after Dec. 13. Once an optional training assignment is made available, if it is done before 12/13, you receive an extra point on the Final Exam. However, it is recommended that you do a Training and Reading before the relevant project is available. Many assignments have steps labeled Explore. These are part of the assignment and you should send me the file that results after all steps, including the Explore steps. See the next page for dates, office hours, assignments and readings Page24 24
