2 2.b Semester(s) offered (check) Fall Spring X Summer Other All courses must be offered at least once every 2 years. If course will be offered on a biannual basis, please indicate here: 2.c Student Requirements Students required to take this course: (by program and year, as appropriate) Medical Illustration graduate students Students who might elect to take the course: In the sections that follow, please use sub-numbering as appropriate (eg. 3.1, 3.2, etc.) 3.0 Goals of the course (including rationale for the course, when appropriate): 3.1 To introduce students to technologies that allow us to visualize anatomic, cellular, and molecular structures that are otherwise invisible 3.2 To instruct students in the use of molecular visualization software to view 3D molecular models 3.3 To review basic chemistry and molecular biology so students can understand and manipulate molecular models 3.4 To instruct students in the use of Osirix, Fovia, and similar software to create 3D anatomical models and animations from actual patient imaging data (CT, MRI, etc.) 4.0 Course description (as it will appear in the RIT Catalog, including pre- and corequisites, and quarters offered). Please use the following format: Course number: ILLM-608 Name of Course Long Title: Scientific Visualization Name of Course Short Title: Scientific Visualization Pre-requisite: ILLM-601 Human Gross Anatomy Class 2, Lab 3, Credit 3 (Spring) Emerging technologies enable scientists to visualize structures that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. For example, molecular visualization software allows us to construct highly accurate molecular models from x-ray crystallography and other structural data. Cryo-EM and confocal microscopy are revealing the previously unknown structure of cellular organelles. Medical imaging systems allow us to reconstruct the human body in three dimensions from actual patient data (CT scans, MRI, etc.). This course explores the use of these technologies to provide references for traditional artwork and to export models for digital rendering and animation. 2
