13 Theory of Operation The basic operation is as follows 1. Commands are received from the PC Server Via a Host Bus Adaptor 2. Picker is instructed to move media from slot to drive 3. Drive reads/write to media as required 4. Picker is instructed to move media back to slot Media move takes about 5-6 seconds Once loaded drives operate simultaneously February 2011 DISC Technical Training 13

16 Optical has a long history DISC (NSM) sold the first CD library 1990 Introduced DVD in launched 25GB Blu-ray libraries 2011 BDXL arrives with 128GB BDXL drive can still read the 20 year old CDs Unique in the storage industry LTO only reads 2 generations back, so LTO5 can only read LTO3, released 5 years earlier. 17 Theoryof operation Writing data on to an optical media Strong laser light is shone on to a small area on the media, changing the chemical structure and creating a series of dots Reading data from an optical media Lower powered laser is either reflected or absorbed by the series of dots on the media is detected and the data decoded February 2011 DISC Technical Training 17

23 Media Handling precautions Don t touch the surface of the media Exposed media should be handled without touching the readable areas of the disc. Scratches, fingerprints, or any other artefact on the disc surface may cause poor writing and shorten life of data Best wear cotton gloves when handling media Ideally use DISC s SmartPacks for transporting media Store in a dark and dust free office type environment Temperature from 10 C to 40 C February 2011 DISC Technical Training 23

28 Special Software Considerations Carefully consider caching methodology Data should be written to optical as soon as possible Larger cache improves performance particularly with concurrent users Ensure database/index is backed up Rebuilding it from the mediacan take along time Configure to create two copies of data Offline media should be tracked via the software Provide location of media if the data is required February 2011 DISC Technical Training 28

30 Library Configuration Considerations Performance is a function of drive, media and software speed SAS connectivityallows drives to run at full speed Current Drive writes at 10x, ~45 MB/s BD-R 6x Media is readily available ~ 27 MB/s Most software writes at 2x and verifies the data Resultant write speed is around 4MB/s per drive Software cache will improve perceived performance February 2011 DISC Technical Training 30

32 Installation and Administration Receiving inspection If Shock Watch glass is red or the packaging is damaged the Library was roughly handled or dropped and therefore potential damaged. 35 Preventative Maintenance DISC libraries require little regular maintenance Fan filter should be checked every 6 months and changed if dirty Fan filter must be changed every 2 years February 2011 DISC Technical Training 35

36 Basic fault finding How to determine if a fault has occurred Alarm may sound (Top tip: F 1 4 silences it) Software alerts Unable to write or read data Most common fault is running out of blank media please check before calling... February 2011 DISC Technical Training 36
