3 Introduction The IPM-1SE is a single E1/T1/J1 port Time Division Multiplexer (TDM) over Internet Protocol (IP) device that allows connection legacy TDM devices over an IP infrastructure. The IPM unit is housed in a 1U high half rack enclosure with an integrated universal (90-264VAC) switching power supply. Overview Figure 1. Front Panel of IPM-1SE The front panel of the IPM-1SE shows all status LEDs and includes the RS-232 console port used in provisioning the device. 4 Figure 2. Rear Panel of IPM-1SE The rear panel of the IPM-1SE provides all the necessary connections to the network devices and to power. The following is a description of each. 1. Mains Connector: This IEC C6 connector, sometimes referred to as 'Mickey Mouse' or 'Cloverleaf' type connector is the mains input for AC power. The power cord requires the matching C5 connector and the mains voltage supports a range of VAC +/- 10%. 2. Power Switch: This rocker switch is used to enable or disable power to the internal circuitry. When place in the "0" or OFF position, power is cut. When placed in the "1" or ON position, power is applied. 3. Rx/Tx BNC (TDM): These BNC connectors are for G.703 E1 75 ohm connection using unbalanced coaxial cables. The 'Rx' connector is for receiving signal and the 'Tx' connector is for transmitting. 4. TDM Link: This 8 pin RJ-45 follows the USOC RJ-48C standard for connecting the balanced twisted pairs for 120 Ohm E1 or 100 Ohm T1/J1. (pin 1=RxRing, pin 2=RxTip, pin 4=TxRing, pin 5=TxTip) 5. Local Ethernet: This 10/100 auto-negotiated Ethernet port is for connection to the local LAN network. If this device is being used stand-alone and not as a network gateway, then no connection is required at this port. 6. UpLink Ethernet: This 10/100 auto-negotiated Ethernet port is the uplink to the network that will transport the TDM over IP traffic. Connection to this port is NOT optional. Connect the appropriate TDM line, either unbalanced Coaxial or balanced twisted pair to the unit's BNC or TDM Link connector. Connect the UpLink Ethernet to the network that will carry the TDM traffic to the remote IPM-1SE. Connect the local LAN to the Local Ethernet connector if applicable. 4

5 IPM-1SE Application example IPM-1SE Application Notes The following is broken into 5 steps that need to be configured for each unit. For clocking concerns, the IPM-1SE pair can be considered transparent. However, for proper operation, the configuration must be set to place the "Master" unit towards the E1 clock source (towards the up stream) and place the "Slave" unit towards the CPE side. Connect the IPM-1SE via serial console cable to a PC or notebook with HyperTerminal program or other VT-100 compatible terminal program and set the communication parameters for 115.2k, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control. Once the terminal is connected to the IPM, power on the IPM and the terminal show display the IPM's prompt. Please use IP address values for your network and application. To connect via twisted pair on the RJ-45 TDM connector, the connections are: 1 - RRING 2 - RTIP 4 - TRING 5 - TTIP No configuration was done for the local LAN port. Connect the IP network to the Uplink connector, straight UTP will connect to switch. Bandwidth considerations Packetized E1 requires approximately 3.284Mbps bandwidth. To optimize the packet throughput, especially for lower speed networks such as 10Base-T, b or even g, there are three steps that can be used for improvement over the default configuration's parameters. Briefly they are, modified packet header, increased packet size, and increased jitter buffer. 1. Modified Packet Header The default packet header in the IPM is RTP Header Format (RFC1889) specifically designed for TDM over packet switched networks. The header requires 58 bytes total. The IPM also has the option to set a custom proprietary header (Redux header) which requires only 4 bytes over the Ethernet header, therefore making better use of bandwidth. To set the minimal header, use the CLI and configure in both units. 8 2. Increased Packet Size In a lower speed network or in a wireless network that works in simplex mode, increasing the packet size will result in reducing the number of packets sent. This can be beneficial in increasing throughput, but it might be at the expense of voice quality if packets are dropped, since the dropped packets will be larger, containing more data. As with most configurations, adjustment must be made to provide best performance. In an unframed E1/T1 setup, the payload length can range from 42 to 1492 bytes, when using the minimal header. If using the RTP header, the payload length must be a multiple of 32 bytes for E1 or 24 bytes for T1/J1. The range of setting is 32 to 1440 for E1 or 24 to 1440 for T1. In framed mode, the payload length parameter is the number of frames. To modify the packet size, again use the CLI, and adjust within the TDM submenu. Make the adjustments equally on both units in the link. Increase Jitter Buffer The default jitter buffer for a full E1 unframed transmission is only 5ms. If the latency of Ethernet on the master to slave units is more than 5ms, errors will occur. To check LAN latency, issue a ping from the LAN A to LAN B. Find the average latency and increase the jitter buffer to handle the latency. For voice applications, keep the jitter buffer under 250ms (1/4 second) to avoid any noticeable delay or echo in voice.
