Welcome About this Supplement The DRG-Series of Digital Radio Gateway (DRG) devices supports many digital-radio functions. However, not all digital radios support all of these functions. Hence, the DRG is factory configured for a particular digitalradio interface depending on the type of digital radio or device you intend to use. This publication supplements the information in the DRG-Series Product Manual originally supplied with your DRG device. The information covers the configuration and diagnostics of the DRG implementing the Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) Paging interface. This variant of the DGR100 (DRG100-TAPPAGE91) has been developed to support the TAP paging technology. TAP is an industry-standard protocol for sending short text messages via the DRG for onward transmission to compatible pager devices. The DRG100-TAPPAGE91 connects serially with a TAP pager terminal capable of sending pager messages over the air. The DRG with TAP Paging provides a communications link between an Omnitronics dispatch console, such as Alto, and a TAP-compatible pager device. This implementation is known as the Omnitronics Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) Paging Interface, and allows the DRG to extend pager communications to Omnitronics dispatch consoles. TAP Paging Supplement vii
Intended Audience This manual is intended for technical support personnel, system integrators, and network administrators, who install, configure and maintain the DRG. Firmware Compatibility The configuration of the DRG described in this supplement is compatible with the TAP Paging interface for the DRG100 as listed below. Please contact your local Omnitronics Sales Representative for further information. Firmware DRG100 TAP Paging Interface Stock Code DRG100-TAPPAGE91 Related Documentation In addition to this supplement, the following provide related information: DRG100 Digital Radio Gateway Product Manual (MNL-00106) Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) v1.8 The following documents define the protocols implemented, which are all available as RFC documents from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF): RFC RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications RFC RTP Profile for Audio/Video Conferences with Minimal Control RFC RTP Payload for DTMF, Telephony Tones and Telephony Signals RFC SIP: Session Initiation Protocol RFC An Offer/Answer Model with the Session Description Protocol RFC SDP : Session Description Protocol viii Welcome
Configuration This chapter discusses the configuration of the DRG implementing the TAP Paging Interface, and includes the following sections: Viewing the System Status Viewing the Digital Radio Status on page 2 Digital Radio Configuration on page 3 Viewing the System Status Select the System Status menu to display comprehensive status information about your DRG. The information displayed on this page is readonly so you cannot make any changes to the values. This page shows the version information for both the hardware and the firmware used in the DRG together with its operational status. Figure 1 shows an example of the System Status page when logged in under the administrator account if you are logged in under the technician or limited-user account, the information displayed will be the same; however, you will not see as many menu items. Most of the information shown on this page is the same for all digital interfaces supported by the DRG for further information about this commonality, refer to the respective DRG-Series Product Manual. The information that is specific to the TAP Paging Interface appears under the Pager Terminal Status section (see Viewing the Digital Radio Status on page 2). TAP Paging Supplement 1
Figure 1. System status page Viewing the Digital Radio Status Figure 2 shows an expanded view of the the typical interface information for a DRG implementing TAP Paging. Figure 2. Status of the digital-radio interface 2 Configuration
The information displayed under this section includes the following: Serial Connection shows the status of the serial communications link between the DRG100 and the TAP pager device. This will either be Connected or Disconnected. Last Pager ID shows the identifier of the last pager device to be paged over the communication network. Last Page Result shows the status of the most recent page to the pager device specified by Last Pager ID. The result value can be one of the following: Successful, Sending..., or Failed with a TAP result code (this is the raw error value as returned by the pager terminal), or Unknown when the result is some other value. Digital Radio Configuration Select Digital Radio on the menu to display the Digital Radio configuration page similar to the one shown in Figure 3. The settings shown here are on the Digital Radio tab. Interface-specific settings are on the Pager Settings tab (see Pager Settings on page 4). All settings are the same in basic and advanced modes. Figure 3. Configuration page for Digital Radio settings TAP Paging Supplement 3
Digital Radio Settings The settings on the Digital Radio tab are common to all digital interfaces. Omnitronics Gateway Interface Configure the Omnitronics Gateway Interface section as follows: TCP Port Number is the port the DRG uses for incoming TCP connections the DRG acts as a TCP server accepting incoming connections on this port from other Omnitronics devices. Pager Settings Select Digital Radio on the menu, and then select the Pager Settings tab to display the digital-radio configuration for the TAP Paging interface, as shown in Figure 4. The same settings apply in basic and advanced modes. Figure 4. Configuration for TAP Paging settings 4 Configuration
TAP Paging Settings The TAP Paging Settings configure the serial communications settings for the TAP interface: Pager ID width specifies the maximum number of digits allowed in a fixed-width Pager ID. If you type fewer digits than this, the Pager ID will be padded out with leading zeroes. The total number of digits in the Pager ID cannot exceed 10. If fixed-width padding is not required, set this to zero. Maximum page text length specifies the number of characters allowed in the text message for onward transmission to the pager device. Default is 20 characters. Maximum allowed is 180 characters. Baud rate selects the serial communications data rate in bits per second (bps) when using the serial port to communicate with the pager device. Default is Data Bits is the number data of bits in a character and can be either 7 or 8 bits (the default). Stop Bits is the number of bits used to delimit each character included in the text message, and can be 1 (the default) or 2. Parity selects the type of parity to use for the serial transfer of characters and can be None (the default), Even, or Odd parity. Flow Control selects the type of flow control to use for the serial transfer of characters. If you do not want to use flow control, select NONE (the default); otherwise, select XON/OFF for software flow control or RTS/CTS for hardware flow control. Pager Terminal Password specifies the password required to access the pager terminal using serial communications. The default is blank. TAP Paging Supplement 5
