4 Module Overview This module provides an overview of the Polycom Field Diagnostics tool that has been developed specificially for the Polycom Group Series endpoints. Intended Audience This course is intended for students that are familiar with existing Polycom solutions and now want to learn about the management interface of the Polycom Group Series endpoints. Prerequisites Students should have attended RealPresence Implementation, Configuration and Troubleshooting (Level 2) training or have equivalent experience with Polycom video and infrastructure products. Product Release Date Polycom Group Series endpoint product family was made generally available on October Lab Exercise / Demonstration Scenario A lab exercise on using the Polycom Field Diagnostics for the Group Series endpoint is provided with this training. Detailed instructions are provided for students that have access to the necessary Polycom equipment and a recorded demonstration is also provided. Page 4 of 9

5 Power On Self Test (POST) The Power On Self Test (POST) for the new group series is more extensive than the process used in the HDX product line. This is now a two-phase process and includes tests both before and after the operating system (OS) loads. Before the OS loads, the system runs the first phase which is called early POST. The checks in this phase include a full test of the entire span of memory, a kernel loading check and a check of the microcontroller. The second phase of the POST happens after the OS is loaded. This phase checks USB controller, ethernet controllers (internal and external) and SD card partitions. Critical errors during the POST will cause the process to stop and the system will generate a red flashing LED. During the POST, the system will generate a blue LED. These critical errors will be logged directly in the microcontroller s memory and can be retrieved using the new Field Diagnostics tool. Non critical POST errors will briefly generate an amber LED and the boot process will continue. Warnings are collected by a system process and will show up as Android Alerts. An example of a non-critical error would be a fault with the USB controller. This is considered non-critical because it does not affect the ability to conduct a video conference. Polycom Field Diagnostics A new Field Diagnostics has been created and is easily accessible via Telnet. This new utility does not require a reboot of the system and can be run while the system is up and running. This can be extremely valuable as it allows troubleshooting during a video call. Field Diagnostics are accessed via a Telnet session which provides access to the Polycom Shell (psh). Entering the command polydiag from within the Polycom Shell will provide a list of the available tests, as shown in the screen capture below: Page 5 of 9

The Examples of some basic commands include: polydiag post probe verbose pulls the POST log from the microcontroller polydiag gpp probe part=enet dev=0 tests the ethernet port polydiag post runs all of the POST tests, in order Note: the polydiag tool is an evolving technology and not all tests and options are available in the initial release Page 7 of 9

Exercise Summary (5 Minutes) Objective During this lab you will use a telnet client, such as Putty, to access the Polycom Field Diagnostics. Objectives include: Access a Polycom Group Series endpoint using a telnet client Issue the command polydiag to review a list of available diagnostic tests What You Will Learn After completing the exercises you will be able to: Use the putty telnet client to access the command line interface of a Group Series endpoint Run a few very simple Polycom Field Diagnostics commands Detailed Lab Steps Use the putty Telnet Client to Access the Group Series Endpoint 1. Start a telnet client, such as PuTTY and connect to the IP address of the Group Series endpoint 2. At the command line, enter polydiag which will return a list of commands 3. Enter the command polydiag gpp help to see a list of the tests available 4. Now enter the command polydiag gpp which will test the SD card, both USB ports and the ethernet port 5.
