3 1 Introduction 1.1 Product Description The ComCC 1250m Modem Data Multiplexer is a flexible I/O driven tool for broadcast data routing and Closed Captioning. ComCC 1250m provides a powerful center of operations for a wide variety of key captioning related needs for broadcasters and their data providers. The Modem Data Multiplexer features two independent channels for dial-up caption input. It has 8 outbound TCP/IP connections that can be used to forward 608 caption commands and data to any listening server. Smart Encoder command filtering is also available, allowing you to forward only raw 608 caption data. The ComCC 1250m also features 4 outbound RS-232 serial connections that can be used to route incoming 608 caption commands and data. The ComCC 1250m can be configured from the user-friendly DashBoard software, which is available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. 2

5 3 DashBoard Configuration The DashBoard software is used to administer the cards in your opengear frame. Once you have successfully installed the DashBoard tool, open the program to configure your card and obtain status information. There are two main sections in the DashBoard interface: the left side contains status information, while the right side contains configurable settings. On the right, there are four tabs at the top which can be used to select between the configuration subsections: Setup, TCP/IP, Serial, and Upgrade. Additionally, there are four general-purpose buttons at the bottom of the DashBoard window. The Refresh button updates the fields in Dash- Board to reflect the card s current state. The Upload button enables you to apply a software update file to the card s DashBoard interface. The Reboot button has no effect; cards should be rebooted by removing and re-inserting them into the frame. The Close button closes the frame card interface. 4

6 3.1 System Setup Networking IP Address Subnet Mask Gateway Sets a fixed network address for the unit on your LAN. The subnet mask should be set to match the bit mask used on your LAN. The gateway should be set to the address of the computer or device that the unit will use to communicate outside of your local network. 5

7 3.1.2 Channel Status Modem Status Service Status Restart Button Stop Button Displays the status of the dial-up modem on the respective channel. Possible values: Connected, when a captioner has successfully dialed into the modem; Ringing, when there is an incoming call on that modem; and On-hook otherwise. Displays the status of services required for proper multiplexer operation on the respective channel; Active indicates that the multiplexer service is on and Inactive indicates that it has been turned off. Restarts the multiplexer services on the respective channel; this should only be used during a technical support sequence. Stops the multiplexer services on the respective channel; this should only be used during a technical support sequence. 6

8 3.2 TCP/IP This section allows you to configure up to eight TCP/IP socket outputs to which incoming caption data can be forwarded. IP Address Port Input Channel The network address of the socket connection to be established. The TCP/IP port of the socket connection to be established. The modem input channel that is the source for data forwarded to this socket. 7

9 Data Filtering Enable Status Determines whether Smart Encoder commands should be filtered from modem input or retained. If your output is being sent to a caption encoder, filtering should be disabled; if you are instead feeding a device that requires 608 caption data, filtering should be enabled. Enables a connection at the respective IP address and port. Displays the status of the respective socket connection. 8

10 3.3 Serial This section allows you to configure up to four RS-232 serial outputs to which incoming caption data can be forwarded. Input Channel Speed (Baud) Character Size Stop Bits Parity The modem input channel that is the source for data forwarded to this serial port. The speed at which the serial port communicates. The number of data bits per character. The number of stop bits per character. Determines the port s parity-checking protocol. 9

11 Enable Enables output on the respective serial port. Flow control is disabled. 10

12 3.4 Upgrade This section allows you to upgrade the ComCC 1250m s software through the USB flash port located at the front of the card. File Name Upgrade Button Upgrade Status The base file name of the upgrade file to be administered; this must be located in the root directory of your flash drive. Prompts you to confirm the upgrade request. Displays the status of the upgrade process. 11

13 A Troubleshooting Q) I enabled a socket connection, but the data isn t passing through. A) After clicking the Enable checkbox, wait a few seconds until you see the LED status indicator turn green. Only then will the 608 data be transferred. Also, make sure you are using the correct ComCC 1250m channel for your connection. Finally, check the modem status for that channel (under the Setup tab) and make sure that it is Connected; if it is not, the captioner should hang up and dial in again. Q) I enabled a socket connection, but the LED status indicator is not turning green. A) Make sure you are using the correct IP and port settings for that particular connection. If you are certain that you are, contact the server administrator. It is possible that the server is temporarily down, or is blocked behind a firewall. It is also possible that your network settings on the ComCC 1250m are inaccurate. In Dashboard, under the Setup tab, please make sure your IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address are set correctly. You can also try disabling the connection, waiting a few seconds, and then re-enabling it. If that doesn t work, click the restart button for the ComCC 1250m service on that connection s channel. Q) I enabled a serial port connection, but the data isn t passing through. A) Make sure you are using the correct ComCC 1250m channel for your connection, and that the serial port settings you have entered in Dash- Board match those of the equipment to which the serial port s output is being sent. You can also try disabling the connection, waiting a few seconds, and then re-enabling it. If that doesn t work, click the restart button for the ComCC 1250m service for that connection s channel. Also, check the modem status for that channel (under the Setup tab) and make sure that it is Connected; if it is not, the captioner should 12

14 hang up and dial in again. Q) The captioner cannot connect to the modem on the ComCC 1250m. A) Identify the modem channel that the captioner is trying to dial into, and then click the restart button for the ComCC 1250m service for that channel. The ComCC 1250m service for that channel must be running in order for the captioner to be able to dial into that channel. For further help, please contact EEG Support. 13
