5 1 Introduction MCCI s USB-IF High Speed Compliance Test Report is divided into three sections: Section 1 is a brief introduction and description of the device being tested; Section 2 provides a descriptive breakdown of the legacy (full speed) tests that a device must pass; Section 3 contains the USB-IF High speed Compliance Test Checklist and a summary of MCCI s findings on how the device performed. Sample Company contracted with MCCI to conduct USB-IF High Speed Compliance Testing on the Product. All testing results in this document pertain to the Product, hereafter referred to as the device under test (DUT). 2 Vendor Information Vendor: Company Speed: High Driver Version: 1.0 Product: Product Rev: 1.0 Firmware Version: 1.0 Job Code: TXXX TID: 1xxxxxxx USB Silicon Vendor: Silicon Tester: Felix Iannone Result Upload: yes USB Silicon Model: Silicon Date: 01/07/2006 MCCI Fee: Paid USB Silicon Certification: 1xxxxxxx 3 Legacy USB-IF Compliance Tests The testing stages for full speed compliance are as follows: Current Measurements Droop-Drop Inrush Back-drive Voltage Signal Quality Device Framework XP Interoperability XP or W2K Interoperability OSX 3.1 Current Measurements Test Result: Page 2 of 45pages 2

6 The DUT s current was measured using a Keithley 2000 multimeter and current draw test jig that was obtained through the USB-IF. The required tests were as follows: Undriven signal current Driven signal current Active signal current Suspend signal current 3.2 Droop/Drop Testing These two tests can only be run on hubs, devices with embedded hubs, full systems (i.e. desktops, laptops, etc.), or silicon Droop Test Result: N/A (Not applicable) This test is done using either 100 ma or 500 ma loads connected to each port and a droop board on a port adjacent to the bus where the droop measurement will be taken. The measurement is taken off the Vbus line via the S.Q.I.D.D. board. This test measures the fluctuation of voltage when a load is connected to an adjacent port (as simulated by the droop board) Drop Test Result: N/A (Not applicable) This test is done using the current draw test jig (as provided by the USB-IF) and the Keithley 2000 multimeter. Two measurements are taken. The first measurement is the voltage of the hub/system/etc. with no load on any of the ports. The second measurement is the voltage of the hub/system/etc. with loads on each port. For buspowered hubs, a voltage measurement is also taken before the Vbus enters the hub (i.e. upstream). This voltage is compared to the measurement downstream of the hub (i.e. after the hub). 3.3 Inrush Test Result: No Reading - This test includes measuring the spike of power (in terms of micro coulombs) that results from the initial plug-in of a device. This test involves the use of a S.Q.I.D.D. board (as provided by the USB-IF) and a Tektronix TDS7254B four channel digitizing Page 3 of 45pages 3

7 oscilloscope. A signal was obtained by the TDS7254B through the S.Q.I.D.D. breakout board and then translated through the use of USB-IF scripts into Matlab graphs, which are contained in this report. This test may not yield results in the case of self-powered devices as they do not rely on bus-power and therefore do not typically produce enough inrush current to measure. 3.4 Back-drive Voltage Test Test Result: This test is performed on self-powered hubs and devices. Section of the USB specification requires that no device shall supply (source) current on VBUS at its upstream facing port at any time. From VBUS on its upstream facing port, a device may only draw (sink) current. It may not provide power to the pull-up resistor on D+/Dunless VBUS is present (see Section 7.1.5). 3.5 Signal Quality Test Result: This test uses the TDS7254B scope with the S.Q.I.D.D. board. The device to host signal is analyzed. The signal obtained by the Oscilloscope is translated into Matlab graphs and provided in this report. The following measurements were used to determine the acceptability of the DUT s signal quality: Crossover Voltage Jitter Eye violation points Identification of an end of packet Rise and Fall time 3.6 Device Framework Test Result: The DUT was tested without the presence of drivers. Diagnostic drivers were loaded into the OS for the enumeration of the device. Device Framework involves determining whether the DUT meets Chapter 9 through the use of USBCheck, a program developed by the USB-IF. Device Framework testing was done on Windows XP Page 4 of 45pages 4

8 3.7 Other Electrical Testing Test Result: 3.8 Interoperability and Demonstrated Operation Results Windows 2000: N/A Not applicable Results Windows XP: The interoperability portion of the compliance test checks whether the DUT can do what it is designed to do (i.e., can demonstrate operation ) while, at the same time, sharing the bus with other devices. The other devices must also continue to work. For the purposes of this test, the DUT was tested with the devices that the USB-IF has classified as members of the Gold Tree. The Gold Tree is a qualified group of USB devices that has been verified to have no interoperability problems of their own; they have been shown to work in concert with each other while sharing the bus. Thus they are used as the control group (see list below). If the DUT interferes with the operation of any Gold Tree device, the DUT fails this portion of the compliance test. Testing here was specified as a series of operations performed by a host computer, with the DUT present, enumerated and operating. This included such tests as enumeration on a UHCI, OHCI and an EHCI host controller, system suspend, resume, hot attach/detach/re-attach, and operation of the device. The procedure for interoperability can be located at the USB-IF website at For your information, the devices that make up the USB-IF Gold Tree are listed here. Table 1.
