1 IBM Software Group Using the CPSM WUI for Problem Determination in a CICSplex Brad Dixon WebSphere Support Technical Exchange

2 The Environment This scenario is designed to provide a situation that would allow us to demonstrate how the CICSPLEX SM Web User Interface (WUI) can be used a a debug and repair tool. CICSPlex SM s (CPSM) single system image (SSI) is the key to monitoring our CICS resources across multiple LPAR s. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 2

3 The Environment (cont) The CPSM WUI is an alternative to the MVS/TSO ISPF end-user interface (EUI). IBM has announced that the WUI is the CPSM interface to use and that the EUI will be removed in a future release. Unlike the EUI, the views used by the WUI are customizable and can be set so that particular users can use their particular default viewsets. Real Time Analysis (RTA) will be used to verify the state of CICS regions. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 3

4 REAL TIME ANALYSIS In the example that we are showing today, the System Availability Monitoring (SAM) is active in all of the CICS region. MAS Resource Monitoring is not required. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 4

5 What is System Availability Monitoring? With SAM, you can be notified if a CICS system is not active at any point during its expected hours of operation. You can also be notified if any of the following conditions should start or stop: One or more CICS/ESA dynamic storage areas become short on storage (SOS). A CICS/ESA system dump (SYSDUMP) is taken. For CICS/ESA 3.3 or later, this condition indicates that an MVS SVC dump has been requested. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 5

6 What is System Availability Monitoring? (cont) A CICS/ESA transaction dump (TRANDUMP) is taken. The CICS system has reached the maximum number of tasks (MAXTASK) it is allowed at any one time. One or more resources have impacted the processing of a CICS/ESA application (STALL). WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 6

7 The Perceived Problem The operations help line is ringing. End-users are complaining about slow response time for their transactions and their terminals are hanging. A new application has been added to the CICSplex, but operations was not informed of the added storage requirements. You can verify that a problem is really occurring by checking the ALERTS panel. 10 Interpreting Outstanding Events The Events are ranked by priority and time The Event name is a brief description of the problem The Event target is the CICS region where SAM detected the problem The associated view provides a starting point for the operator Note that soon after the short on storage condition was raised, there were IRLINK stall conditions detected in SCSCPTA1 and SCSCPTA2 WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 10

11 Getting More Information You can user the CICSDSA view to gain more information. In our case we are using a modified view that accesses the CICSDSA resource table. This tabular view named _OPS_CICSSTOR provides a summary of storage in all of your regions with warning lights. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 11

13 The CICS Storage Utilization View The warning light at this time is still yellow. If this condition remains, requests for extended dynamic storage areas (EDSA) could be resolved out of the DSA. When this occurs, you will have a full SOS condition and the warning light will turn RED The SCSCPAA1 region will stall You need to see if the problem has gotten any worse, so return to the Alerts view WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 13

15 Systems are Really Beginning to Back Up (cont) The SOS condition was raised in the Application owning regions (AOR s) at 09:49 and at 09:52 The Terminal owning regions (TOR s) are stalled generating two events. IRLINK STALLED at 09:50 ALLCSESS STALLED allocate sessions at 09:54 There is also an EVENT raised for the SCSCPJA7 AOR. You need to go back to the storage view. 18 General Information about Customized Viewsets The _OPS_CICSSTOR viewset is based on the CICSSTOR Resource table. Creating a vewset in the WUI without any modifications, will display all of the attributes of the table in alphabetical order. Before creating the viewset, you need to understand how it will be used. When creating a new viewset, care must be taken to insure the viewset readable. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 18

19 Some Advantages of the _OPS_CICSSTOR The viewset was created with system operators in mind. The CICS system name column provides a link to the detailed storage view for that CICS region. The allocated storage columns for DSA and EDSA are hyperlink fields. The refresh rate is set to 10 seconds. In this dynamic situation, close tabs need to be kept. The SUMMARIZE button allows you to get quick view of the entire plex. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 19

21 The Detailed Storage Capacity View You ve taken the hyperlink on the system name and the CICS storage capacity view is provided. This is a more detailed storage view that allows you to modify the: Current DSA limit Current EDSA limit You need to modify storage. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 21

23 Make the Change Effective Ensure that the box is checked by the updated field Click on the update limits button. You need to check your storage utilization to verify that the problem has not gotten worse and that your changes have taken affect on SCSCPAA1. WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 23

24 Tidying Up In order to get completely out of this crisis SCSCPJA7 needs to be altered to account for the new application Report the situation to your change control group Verify that your RTA events do not have any SOS or IRLINK problems WebSphere Support Technical Exchange 24
