Getting Started with E-Module Building Before building your first e-module, view a completed lesson: There is also a Captivate practice module based on the Lion Basic e-module that you can use to orient yourself to e-module building. Please ask the Interpretive Specialist to provide you with the Lion Basic Practice files. File Management: Keep your files on the shared network drive. For each e-module that you start, create a master folder named for the animal or exhibit, and within that folder, create a subfolder for each type of asset. For example: Selecting template pages: Sometimes you will have more than one layout option for a slide. For example, you can choose to put the picture on the right or on the left. Alternate between the template page options to add visual interest to the module. Selecting images: The Interpretive Specialist will provide a folder of images related to the e-module topic. As you build the e-module, you will select appropriate images based on the e-module copy then crop or edit them in Photoshop to fit the template page. Planning your work: Plan to spend 8 to 32 hours on building the module, depending upon the length. You may receive e-module assets at different times during the project as they come in by request from different departments. E-module building process: This Quick Start Guide is designed so that it can be used linearly to build an entire e-module. You can start with Open and Set Up Captivate Template, and continue in order through the Guide until you get to Preview, Troubleshoot and Publish. As you get more experience with e-module building, the Guide may serve more of a reference tool role for quick look-up of a Captivate or Photoshop procedure you haven t performed in a while. Save your work: As you work on building the e-module, remember to save your work often! Questions? Contact Donna Parham, Interpretation Specialist dparham@sandiegozoo.org Office: Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Open and Set Up Captivate Template Open a New Project Launch Adobe Captivate and open a new project from the e-module template Interpretivetemplate 2.cptl. *(Important: Do not open/edit the Interpretive-template 2.cptl file directly unless you need to make changes to the template for all future e-modules.) 1. If Captivate is already open: File > New Project > Project from Template If Captivate is not yet open: Create New > From Template 2. Navigate to the template folder and open Interpretive-template 2.cptl. 3. File > Save As Newname <currentyear>.cptx Use the animal or exhibit name and current year, and save it in the Captivate files folder. For example: Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Add Slides The Interpretive template only has one slide of each type. You may need additional copies of a particular slide. Tip: See the e-learning Development & Style Guide for information about how each slide type is used. The e-module copy that you will receive from the Interpretive Specialist will be broken down into the Major Sections (which follow the e-module standard navigation), and sub-sections for the e-module. The major sections in the e-module copy (INTRODUCTION, PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, etc.) correspond to title slides that are linked to the navigation bar. These slides are in the template, so they will already be in your new project. Within each e-module major Section slide, add new slides as needed based on the number of sub-head content areas. Each sub-head gets its own slide. For example: Major Sections and Sub-sections INTRODUCTION Welcome Objectives PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS Physical characteristics What Kind of Snake? It s the Pits Facts & Figures DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT Distribution ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR What s Eating You? REPRODUCTION Reproduction Snake Eggs CONSERVATION Conservation Success at the San Diego Zoo # slides needed in section Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
1. To add a slide, in the Filmstrip, select the slide you want to copy. 2. Right click, Duplicate (or D). Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
3. In the Filmstrip, drag and drop the new copy of the slide to the desired location. Note: Do not change the label names, so for example, leave 7 pic left and 8 pic left as is. 4. Wait until the end to delete unneeded slides after you have added ALL e-module content. Tip: Use the empty template Section slides to help you stay organized and to quickly jump around when you are adding content to the various e-module sections. You will delete these Section slides later, which includes special instructions to copy each Section slide label into its adjacent slide s label to maintain the e-module navigation. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Add Text Take the text or copy from the Interpretation Specialist and insert it into the e-module template slides. 1. From the Filmstrip, go to the slide in which you want to add text. 2. Triple click on the text box to select the placeholder text in the text box. Tip: Triple click allows you to select all of the contents (or entire paragraphs where there are multiple paragraphs. You can also use double click then select the text with your mouse. 3. Type in the new text or use copy and paste from the e-module copy. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
4. Whether you type the text or use the copy and paste, be sure not to change the default font settings (see the Character group on the Properties tab). Text style is added automatically when you paste or type into the field: * Family: Trade Gothic LT Standard Style: Regular (or Bold) Size: Headline- 28 pt Subhead- 20 pt Body Text- 16 pt Reminder Text- 22 pt *In this screen shot, the + before the headline name indicates it has been changed. Click the circled button to restore default settings. Tip: It is permissible to move or resize the text boxes on a template page to accommodate an oversized image. 5. To move the text box, click it and drag to desired location. 6. To resize, click and drag the handles on the text box to desired height or width. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
7. To add a Text caption. Insert > Standard Objects > Text Caption 8. Make sure that the object is set to Play for Duration of Slide in the Timeline. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Insert Photos and Video Size and Crop Photos in Photoshop The following steps are for editing an image in Photoshop, which is the preferred tool. For each page of the e-module that requires an image, you will need to select (from the files provided by the Interpretive Specialist) the photo that best illustrates the e-module copy or text. Selected images then need to be cropped to remove unwanted parts and resized to the appropriate dimensions for the template page. The e-module template specifies these image sizes: 1. Picture on left 708x470 pixels 2. Picture on right 608x470 pixels 3. Picture on top 570x1024 pixels 4. Whole page 768x1024 pixels 5. Snap It! quiz 360x360 pixels The images you receive from the Interpretive Specialist will be in JPEG (.jpg) format. All images that you crop or modify in Photoshop should be saved to JPEG format with the exception of images that need to be made intro transparent background images (Mask an Image in Photoshop section of Guide). Transparent images must be saved in PNG format. With the exception of transparent PNG images, DO NOT rename the images after editing. Tips: Have Photoshop and Captivate open at the same time to easily move back and forth as you select images for a particular slide then crop and resize them to fit. In Photoshop you can undo steps by using Step Backward from the Edit Menu (Edit > Step Backwards). Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
1. To crop or resize an image. In Photoshop, Open image from e- module images folder File > Open 2. Crop to a specific size. Select the Crop Tool in the Tool bar or click C on your keyboard. 3. Enter the desired Width and Height in pixels (px) in the Crop Tool Options bar. Tip: The two-way arrows between the width and height fill in boxes allow you to swap these values. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
4. With Crop Tool selected, drag your mouse across the image to select the area to crop. Note that the selected area will be constrained to the aspect ratio (H, W) that you specified in the Crop Tool Options Bar. 5. Use your mouse to drag the overlay box (pictured here is the Rule of Thirds overlay grid) to the desired composition. The parts outside the box will be removed. Tip: The Rule of Thirds overlay grid is a composition helper tool. You can change this to a regular Grid or None: 6. Double Click in the overlay grid, or use Image > Crop to remove unwanted area. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
7. Freeform crop. Use freeform crop if you don t have set height and width requirements. With Crop tool selected, drag your mouse over the image. For constrained proportions (both height and width change), click and drag the handles on the overlay box corners. For either height or width, click and drag the handles on the sides of the overlay box. 8. Crop to Height only. Template pages have strict image height requirements. You have some flexibility to increase an image width beyond what is specified by the template image placeholder if needed. Follow the steps above for cropping to Height and Width, but leave the Width blank in the Crop Tool Options bar. Tip: Need to check the original image size? Use the Image menu: Image > Image size Tip: You can change image dimension in the Image Size dialog box when you are ready to add the modified width. Make sure Constrain Proportions is checked before you add the Width value (otherwise the image will be distorted). Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
9. Maintaining the original file name, Save the file to your e-module images folder! For e-modules: File > Save > JPG Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Cut Out an Image in Photoshop Some images (e.g., the Facts & Figures and Hunt for Adaptations template pages) should be cut outs (figure on transparent background), which require Photoshop masking where you will remove the background of the image. Photoshop offers several tools and techniques to achieve this, but the recommended tools are the Magic Wand and Lasso. 1. Open the JPEG image in Photoshop File > Open 2. Add Transparent Layer. Add a new Layer, which will be set at transparent replacing or masking the background selection. Double Click the Background Layer in the Layers panel. 3. New Layer dialog box appears. Make sure Color is set to None, click OK. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
4. Now remove the background of the image. Select the Magic Wand Tool in the Tool Panel. Hold down the Quick Selection Tool in the Tools panel to access this option. Tools panel > Quick Selection Tool > Magic Wand Tool 5. In the Magic Wand Option panel, set the Tolerance level. The Tolerance level dictates the range of sampled colors that will be selected by the Magic Wand Tool (The range is 0 black to 256 white). Tip: Since many of the images you will be working with have less contrasting colors (the colors are more similar) try different values to see what works best. Your goal is to have the Magic Wand select only the parts you want to discard around the animal form (background colors), but not the animal form itself. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
6. With the Magic Wand selected, click into the image background. To add to the selected background, click the Shift key on your keyboard and continue clicking on the background. Tip: Select > Grow will add to your background selection. Tip: Often the Magic Wand will select parts of the image you want to keep. When this happens, click the Option key on your keyboard with the Magic Wand tool enabled. Option click allows you to undo from the background selection. A minus sign will show on the Magic Wand (-). Shift click allows you to add to your selected background. A plus sign will show on the Magic Wand (+). Tip: Use Step Backward to undo Magic Wand selection. Edit > Step Backward Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
7. Clean up the selection using the Lasso Tool. The Magic Wand tool is not very precise (particularly with images that don t have a lot of contrast). The Lasso Tool allows you to select or deselect smaller areas. Tools menu > Lasso Tool 8. With the Lasso Tool selected, use your mouse to drag around an area. Shift click allows you to add to the background selection. A plus sign will show on the Lasso Tool (+). Option click allows you to subtract from the background selection. A minus sign will show on the Lasso Tool (-). Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
9. Optionally, you can use Quick Mask Mode to check the quality of the lines around the animal form. The animal form will be masked in red. Note the areas that need to be touched up (added back to the animal form or added to the background you are removing) Tools menu > Quick Mask Mode (or type Q on your keyboard) 10. When you are finished the selected background will be surrounded with dotted lines. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
11. With the layer selected in the Layers Panel, click the Mask button. 12. A transparent mask is placed over the background. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
13. Save the file to your e-module images folder! For inserting into e-modules: File > Save > PNG Also save the file in Photoshop format for later editing: File > Save > PSD Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Insert Photos To import a prepared image into the Captivate lesson, follow these steps: 1. From the Filmstrip, select the slide to which you want to add photos. 2. Double click the image placeholder to open the Select Image from Library dialog box. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
3. Click Import. 4. Navigate to your e-module images folder and Open the file. This replaces the placeholder with your photo. 5. To add an additional image to a slide (outside of the image placeholder), use the menu bar: Insert > Image. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Show/Hide Items Some slides have stacked layers, which make it difficult to select the placeholder you want. You can temporarily hide chosen items in order to access all placeholders easily. 1. From the Filmstrip, select the slide. Example: Facts and Figures slide Notice how the image placeholder of the measuring_tape_slidelet blocks access to the Male/female text placeholder. 2. In the timeline, at the top between the lock icon and the ruler, adjust the panel to see the full names of the slide objects. 3. Locate the top layer and click the radio button in the Show/Hide Item column. In this example, it is the third item listed in the timeline. You can now access the Male/female text placeholder. Tip: To show the top layer again, click the X in the Show/Hide Item column. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Insert Video You can insert.flv or.f4v files to your slide. The Interpretation Specialist will provide you with video clips that have already been edited for content and length in imovie (and converted to Flash with Video Monkey ). 1. From the Filmstrip, go to the video template slide. Duplicate it and move it to the correct location in the Filmstrip (see Add Slide instructions in the Open and Set Up Captivate Template section). 2. Select the video placeholder object. 3. In the General section under Properties, click the File Link folder. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
4. Navigate to your e-module movies folder and Open the video file to insert the video. 5. Save your project! Tip: In order for videos to play from published Captivate files, the.flv or.f4v file must be present in the folder with the published Captivate file. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Add Audio You can add a recording (.wav or.mp3 files) of animal or other sounds provided by the Interpretation Specialist (from the office library of CDs) to any object (image, button, etc.) or slide in the lesson. 1. From the Filmstrip, select the slide. a. If you want to link the audio to the slide in general, do not select any object on the screen. b. If you want to add the audio file to a particular object on the page, select the object: 2. From the Properties tab, open the Audio section and click Add Audio. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
3. From the Slide (or Object) Audio dialog box, click Import. 4. Navigate to your e-module audio folder (or navigate to the appropriate drive and folder) and Open your animal recording file. 5. At the Audio dialog box: a. Click play to preview the sound. b. Click Close to add the audio file without editing it. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
6. If needed, select the Edit tab in the Object Audio dialog box to edit the recording for length: a. On the audio track, highlight the portion to remove and Cut. b. Play to preview. c. Adjust Volume if needed. d. Save. e. Close to add the audio file. 7. At the Audio properties: a. Check the Loop Audio box (only if it should play for the duration of the slide recommended for music files, not animal vocalizations) b. Add how many seconds for Fade In and Fade Out Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Develop Quizzes Use the questions (and answers) that the Interpretation Specialist provides when creating the slides for the Practice section of the lesson. Choose Template Slide by Quiz Format Here are four frequently used quiz template slides. See the E-learning Development & Style Guide for additional slide types. Matching Multiple Choice Jeopardy Snap It! 1. Choose the template slide that corresponds to the type of question. For example, the Multiple Choice slide is selected for the question, Which habitat is not home for jaguars? A) Rain forests B) Swamps C) Grasslands D) Sea caves E) Dry forests F) Woodlands 2. On the quiz template slide, triple click the question prompt to type in your question, replacing the existing text. 3. Triple click each answer option to type the correct answer and the detractors. 4. Remove any unused features of the template slides (e.g., extra answer choices) by selecting the object and pressing the Delete key. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
5. Indicate which option is the correct answer: a. Multiple Choice: click the radio button in front. b. Matching: click the input box in front of each line in column 1 and select the correct matching item in the list. c. Jeopardy: i. Double click the correct answer to open the properties on the right. ii. Check the Correct Answer box in the General section. d. Snap It!: i. Double click the Widget Question object to open the Widget Properties dialog box. ii. Select the Objects tab. iii. Remove the placeholder Target Object name with the Remove button. iv. Add the new name with the Add Target Object button. Tip: Make sure you have already inserted your animal photo because the image name determines the new name of the Target Object. Don t remember the image name? Select the image to open the Properties panel. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
v. Select the Correct Answer tab. vi. Drag and drop the correct answer item to the Target Objects section. vii. Click OK. Tip: Do you need to know the answer item name to determine which object to drag to the Targe Objects section? Click on the answer item to open the properties on the right. Warning: You can only use one Snap It! quiz question per e-module without having to give unique names to all of the Drag Objects. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Set the Quiz Properties 1. Double click in any unused white area of the slide to display the Quiz Properties on the right. 2. Under the General section, The Answers should automatically update to match the number of answer choices. Tip: If you want more answer options than the template offers, you can change this to insert more "type the answer here" options. Change the Points, if needed. T/F questions are worth 2 points; MC are 5 points; Matching are 2 points each item. Check the Multiple Answers box if more than one answer choice must be checked. 3. Under the Action section, Set On Success to Continue Change the number of Attempts allowed, if needed. Attempts = n-1 (where n is the number of answer choices for multiple choices or the number of T/F items or matching items) Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Prepare to Publish, Preview and Troubleshoot Run spellcheck and delete unused slides, then test out your lesson before publishing by using the Preview tool. Spellcheck 1. Project > Check Spelling Delete Slides Once all content is added to the template (text, images, video, audio, and quizzes), go through the e-module and delete any extra slides, including major Section slides and quiz slides that are not being used. Section slides are key to the e-module navigation so before deleting blank Section slides, re-label the first used slide in that section to act as the section header (usually the slide immediately following the blank Section slide). Tip: Review the e-learning Development & Style Guide section on e-module template navigation to gain an understanding of how the template navigation works. You can also find troubleshooting information for fixing the navigation if needed. 1. Copy label of a Section slide onto the first slide after the Section slide: a. Select Section slide in Filmstrip Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
b. In Properties, copy the text in the Label field c. In Filmstrip, select the first slide after the Section slide d. In Properties, paste the new text into Label field 2. Delete the blank Section slide: a. Select slide in the Filmstrip b. Press the Delete key, or use the menu bar: Edit > Delete Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
3. Repeat this process for each major Section slide except the slides noted in red. Tip: If you accidentally delete a template slide or decide you need it later, you can copy it from a fresh e-module template (File > New Project > Project from Template). Additional Captivate files open in tabs so you can easily toggle between projects. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Preview 1. From the tool bar, select Preview > Project Wait while the project generates. The lesson will begin playing automatically. 2. Use the navigation buttons within the lesson to run through the lesson interactions. Be sure to check that all navigation buttons across the bottom advance the lesson properly. Quizzes 1. Try all wrong answers. 2. Make sure the number of attempts allowed is correct. 3. Test all correct answers. Whole Module 1. Run the entire module several times. 2. Ensure everything stays on the screens (or disappears from screens) as intended. 3. Resolve any glitches. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Publish Publish your completed project as a Flash.swf file. 1. From your open project, select File > Publish. 2. In the Publish dialog box: a. Select Flash (SWF) from the list on the left b. Click Browse: i. Select the folder (the e- module and all related files should go to the project folder called Captivate ) ii. Click Choose c. Check the Publish to Folder box d. Check the Export to HTML box e. Click Publish 3. Click Yes to view the e-module lesson. 4. Once again, go through the process of checking the lesson, quizzes, and all navigation buttons, as listed above. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
Additional Steps The e-learning module building process requires several more steps. Don t forget to do the following: Send for Review 1. Copy files to a public folder in the Drop box. a. Copy and paste ALL of the files that Captivate creates when it publishes, including video and audio files. (If you select and drag the files, they will be moved OUT of your folder, so be sure to use the "Copy" and Paste" commands.) b. Files are done copying when the blue "recycle" logo turns to a green check mark. 2. Launch the Drop box web site and create a public link for the.swf file. 3. Send the Drop box link for the.swf file to the reviewers via . Edit Module 1. Update the module based on the feedback s you receive from the reviewers. 2. Keep the Interpretation Specialist in the loop regarding the changes you make. Make Module Available for Training 1. Upload the final module to the FTP site. 2. Test the live version of the module to confirm that it plays properly. 3. Notify the Interpretive Specialist to add the link to the index page. 4. Notify the Interpretive Volunteer staff that the module is now available for training. Quick Start Guide San Diego Zoo Global
