4 What is Dynamic Display Active Display - Refreshes at a given interval like a heartbeat Designed for the display of many moving objects - Sub second refresh rate Access to OpenGL programming in a MapControl Offloads display processing onto the GPU to increase display performance

5 What Dynamic Display Is Not Not a plug and play solution for all Map Documents - Provide data with your applicaiton Will not make slow maps draw faster Not a cartographic solution - What you see in standard display might not be what you get in Dynamic Dispaly Not designed to work with map layers changes frequently Map design and data preprocessing critical to an effective application

7 Optimization for Dynamic Display Setting up your machine Make sure your have the most up-to-date display driver from graphics card manufacture - Default Windows 7 driver may have problem Recommended to disable Windows Aero Themes in a Dynamic Display enabled application Use the Can You Run it tool to verify you meet the correct hardware requirements - Remote Desktop, VNC, VMs, or Citrix not supported - These solutions virtualizes the display device

10 Working with Static Data What is static data? Optimal data to use These are your non-dynamic layers - Layers that do no implement IDynamicLayer Rasters - Can be used directly Tile cache map services - Downloaded tiles used directly Compact tile caches - Can be created with MapCruncher SDK sample - Uses the MapCooker to build a compact tile cache - Can be added at ArcGIS 10 as a raster layer

11 Working with Static Data Best practices for non-tiled or rasterized data What happens when I enable Dynamic Display? All other GIS layer types must be rasterized - Uses a tiling scheme - Tiles are created for every layer in your map - Stored in your temp directory - Linked to the layer - Link can be saved by saving the layer of the map document - Tiling can take a very long time depending one the scale and the data - Recommended to not use these layers

12 Working with Static Data Best practices for non-tiled or rasterized data Use File Geodatabases or properly tuned SDE data Group similar layers together Use the analyzers from Basemap layers to optimize drawing performance - Basemap layers not supported Keep your symbology simple Use IDynamicCacheLayerManager - Optimize the display of non dynamic layers - Reconnect to already generated tile caches

13 Working with Static Data Best Practices Use Annotation not Labels - Create these in Desktop at different scale levels Use GraphicTracker to manager graphics - Don t use Graphics in the GraphicsContainer

15 Working with Static Data Ideal map construction Bottom layer - Raster, tile cache service layer, or compact cache - Data that doesn t change, used for reference Middle layer (Limit these layers) - Data that rarely changed - Use IDynamicCacheLayerManager to update tiles when data changes Top Layer - Dynamic data

17 Dynamic Data Types of dynamic data GraphicTracker - No need to worry about display Events or Layers - Simple API Using the Dynamic Drawing Events - Events used to do initialization - Draw features without a layer Custom Layers - Must Implement - ILayer, IDynamicLayer, IGeoDataset - Inherit from BaseDynamicLayer

18 Dynamic Data Custom Layers Draw code is executed when layer is flagged as dirty Can operate in two display phases - Immediate Phase - If dirty your code executes every draw - Compiled Phase - If dirty your code executes - Display list is built and drawn on every draw cycle - Until you flag your later as dirty only then will it rerun your code

19 Dynamic Data Glyphs All dynamic data are drawn with Glyphs, which are created using either: - ArcGIS symbology - Not a 1 to 1 correlation - Create from images - IDynamicGlyphFactory.CreateDynamicGlyphFromFile - 32 bit PNG Image with a bitmask - Glyph Group - Uses an RGB bitmap and an Alpha bitmap or a PNG with a bitmask - XML file defining the bounds of each glyph - Load only one texture and easily animated features - More efficient than loading a new Glyph each time

21 Dynamic Display Tips IDyanmicGyphFactory.CreateDynamicGlyphFromBitmap - mybitmap.gethbitmap().toint32() - Creates a copy of the bitmap which will create a memory leak - See - To properly release the Bitmap If drawing simple geometries use a Multipoint - IPointCollection pc = new MultipointClass

22 Dynamic Display Tips Creating points or geometries on multiple threads - Use WKS points - ArcObjects require marshalling and can be a performance hit When drawing complex geometries it is necessary to call ITopologicalOperator.Simplify Use the GeometryBridge methods - Optimized for performance in non-c++ environments
