1 Alice Tutorial 2 Downloading Tutorials Please note that all tutorial resources must be downloaded in Firefox. Navigate to the link provided to you by your class tutor. Right click on each of the tutorial resources and select Save Link As.... In the resulting window click the Save in dropdown arrow and select the F: drive. (This will be your id number followed by on fs2 (F:) eg on fs2 (F:) )

2 Opening Tutorial2.a2w Open Alice as you did in tutorial 1 by going to Start>>Programs>>Alice>>Alice. Click on Open A World and click the Look In dropdown arrow. Select your F: drive. Select the Tutorial2.1.a2w file you downloaded earlier and click Open. If the welcome to Alice window (below) does not appear automatically you can access it from the file menu. Click File and then click Open World Familiarise yourself with this procedure as you will be using it for all further Alice tutorials.

3 Getting Started Now that you have opened the world you should see our cafeteria scene. Press the play button in the top left corner. As you can see Alice is hungry. But the cake is all the way across the cafeteria. Our job is to get Alice across the cafeteria to get some cake using the methods provided. Click on the Alice object from the Object Tree which is located directly below the Play button. This will open Alice s methods in the details area below the Object Tree. As you can see there are many methods in the methods tab for us to use. Moving Alice Click and hold on the Alice move method which is the first method in the list and drag it to below the Alice think method in the window directly to the right of the details window. This is the world.my first method window. You will get a popup menu. Select forward which will give you another popup menu and select 5 meters (See Fig1). Now select the Play button again. You have just told Alice to move forward 5 meters. Fig1 Selecting parameters for a method. Using the same technique, select the following methods placing each to the bottom of the list in the World.my first method window: Alice move >> forward >> 10 meters

4 Congratulations you have gotten Alice to her cake. Now save your work to your F: drive. Saving to your F: drive. To save your work go to File in the top left corner, click on it and select Save World. From here select the down arrow (See Fig2 below). From the down arrow select the F:\ drive. Now enter the name you wish to save the file under and click on save. Fig2 Saving your work Now open up the next tutorial. Follow the procedure described above. As you can see we have a very similar problem in this tutorial. Only this time there are more obstacles. To get Alice to her cake place the following methods in the World.my first method method. Alice move >> forward >> 10 meters Alice turn >> right >> ¼ revolutions Alice move>> forward >> 5 meters Alice turn >> right >> ¼ revolutions

5 Now select the Play button and watch Alice move around the tables. As you can see Alice has stepped in some spilt ketchup. Let s make her comment on this. From the methods window select the Alice say method and place at the bottom world.my first method window. As you can see you only have two options hello and Goodbye. Neither of these seems appropriate for her current predicament so select the option other (See Fig3). This will give you a window in which you can enter your text. Enter the text: Yuck! Ketchup. Now select the Play button again. Fig3 Entering text for say method Now let s get Alice to her snack. Select the following methods and again place them to the bottom of the world.my first method window: Alice move >> forward >> 4 meters using the option other Alice turn >> left >> 0.2 revolutions using the option other Alice move >> forward >> 9 meters using the option other Alice turn >> left >> 0.12 revolutions using the option other Alice move >> forward >> 2 meters using the option other Alice has now reached her cake and is enjoying it. Let s make her give us her thoughts on this. Select Alice think and make her think the phrase Hmm cake! Now select the Play button and watch Alice navigate all of the obstacles. Again save your work to your F:\ drive. Now open world Tutorial2.2.a2w and again follow procedure described above. As you can see we have a very similar world in front of us. Our objective is the same but we now have a new problem. To disguise the ketchup spill someone has placed a cafeteria table over the spill. This has blocked Alice s access to her snack. We ll worry about that in a minute. First of all let s move her to the obstacle. Select the following methods: Alice move >> forward >> 10 meters Alice turn >> left ¼ >> revolutions Alice turn >> right >> ¼ revolutions

6 Now select the Play button and watch Alice move around the tables. As you can see Alice has made it as far as she can go. How do we get around this obstacle? Why don t we make her jump the table? To do this, select the following methods: Alice move >> up >> 1 meter Alice move >> forward >> 3 meters Alice move >> down >> 1 meter Select the play button again and see how Alice gets on. Great now Alice has cleared her obstacle. Let s add a few sound effects to liven this up a bit. Select the Alice play sound method and place it before the Alice move up 1 meter (See Fig4) from above and you will see a list of options. None of these suit our use so select the import sound from the bottom of the popup menu and using the same procedure you use to open a new world navigate to the folder to where you downloaded the sounds and locate the file named boing.wav and click on import. Select the following methods: Alice move >> forward >> 3 meters Alice move >> forward >> 6 meters Now that Alice has reached the cake let s make her give us her thoughts again. Select Alice think and make her think the phrase Hmm cake! and this time lets hear her eating the cake. Select the Alice play sound method and place it on the bottom of the world.my first method window and import the file Mmm.wav. Now select the play button. Congratulations you have completed Tutorial 2. Save your work to your F:\ drive.
