page 1 of 6 ENCM 339 Fall 2017: Cygwin Setup Help Steve Norman Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering University of Calgary September 2017 Introduction This document is designed to help students who would like to command-line programming in C and C++ on their own computers, with a 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating system, version 7 or higher. This should be helpful both for students who are starting from scratch, and for students who have already installed Cygwin, but have been frustrated by this error message... -bash: gcc: command not found... when they ve tried to build an executable from C source code. Get the Cygwin setup program To do this, go to cygwin.com and download the file setup-x86_64.exe This small program does one of two things: If you have never run it before, it will create a fresh installation of Cygwin. If you have run it before, it will update your current installation. Among other things, you will have the option to install additional software packages, packages that you did not select for installation the first time you ran the setup program. Running the setup program Most of the screens you ll see explain themselves pretty well, but the one shown in Figure 1 may be a bit puzzling. This screen allows you to select which software packages to install. You do not want to install all the available packages that is a huge amount of software, most of which you would never use. For students in ENCM 339, it s sufficient to install all the packages in the Base category, plus a small number of packages in the Devel category. All the Base packages are installed by default, so there s no need for you to do any customization in that category. The packages you should select with the Devel category are: gcc-core gcc-g++ clang
Cygwin Setup Help for ENCM 339 page 2 of 6 Figure 1: You ll see this screen after you go through several initial steps in Cygwin setup.
Cygwin Setup Help for ENCM 339 page 3 of 6 To do that, open up the Devel category the result should look something like Figure 2. Then scroll down until you find gcc-core and gcc-g++; you should see something like Figure 3. On the lines for the packages you want, click on the word Skip you should now see version numbers for the packages, as seen in Figure 4. To also select clang, scroll back up within the Devel category and do the same things you just did for gcc-core and gcc-g++. (I didn t make a a screenshot of that.) After you have selected all three packages, click on the Next > button to continue with installation. (Note: Students in lab sections B01 and B02 really only need gcc-core, not gccg++ or clang. gcc-g++ is necessary for students in B03 and B04, who will use C++ later in the course. clang is nice to have, as it provides alternative compilers for both C and C++.) Getting to the right directory Remember, directory is another word for what most computer users would call a folder. Instructions for doing ENCM 339 labs on a PC in ICT 320 assume that you are putting your course folders and files somewhere on your H: drive. If you re working on your own PC, you won t have that drive available, so you ll have to put them somewhere else. There are many reasonable choices as homes for your ENCM 339 work on your own Windows machine, and I can t provide documentation for all those choices. I ll just outline how to work with a couple of reasonable choices. Here s the first choice... I ve made a folder called ENCM339 on my Windows 8.1 desktop, and inside that folder I ve made another folder called Lab1. How do I get Cygwin Terminal to find this folder? In other words, what s the correct form of the cd command? On my machine it s cd /cygdrive/c/users/stephen\ Norman/Desktop/ENCM339 Here are a few things to note: This assumes, as is usually the case, that user s home folders are on the C: drive. Unless you have the same name as I do, you ll have to replace Stephen\ Norman with whatever name gets you to your home folder. The \ (backslash) in front of the space in my name is needed to include the space as part of a single command-line argument. If the backslash is left out, cd would fail, because it would take the space to be a separator between two command-line arguments. And now here s the second-choice... A student has chosen to keep all their work on a USB thumb drive, in a folder called ENCM339. When the student plugs in the thumb drive, it is given E: as its drive letter. Then this command would take Cygwin Terminal to the appropriate folder: cd /cygdrive/e/encm339 (If the thumb drive is given not E: but some other letter, then the e in /e/ should be replaced with the appropriate lower-case letter.)
Cygwin Setup Help for ENCM 339 page 4 of 6 Figure 2: What you ll see when you open the Devel category.
Cygwin Setup Help for ENCM 339 page 5 of 6 Figure 3: By default, installation of gcc-core and gcc-g++ will be skipped.
Cygwin Setup Help for ENCM 339 page 6 of 6 Figure 4: The version numbers now indicate that gcc-core and gcc-g++ are now selected for installation.
