1 Class Syllabus INTERMEDIATE FINALE EVENT CODE(S)/ PERIOD(S)/TIME FRAME(S): 1: Friday, Period 7, 4:50-5:50 p.m. ESTIMATED CLASS SIZE: TARGET LEARNERS: 30 General Elective SYLLABUS DESCRIPTION: Arrangers and musicians familiar with Finale music notation software program work at the computer to better understand the capabilities of Finale. Topics will include: speedy entry using MIDI keyboard, playback controls, lyrics, key changes, and a few shortcuts. Prerequisite: Attendees must be proficient in Finale to attend this intermediate class. OBJECTIVES: 1. To continue the training on Finale. 2. To navigate speedy entry using MIDI keyboard, playback controls, lyrics, key changes, and a few shortcuts. MATERIALS: Finale 2006 Software MIDI Keyboard Computer Lab "I Believe in Music" Printed Music PROCEDURE: 1. Take a survey ofthe class to find out each one's Finale experience. 2. How to Customize your Barbershop Template. Mention Handout #1, but use the template that is already in the Finale program. Set up Layers, Time Signature, and Key Signature. 3. Use "I Believe in Music" ( & Printed Music) to show how to do speedy entry using MIDI keyboard, playback controls, lyrics, key changes, and a few shortcuts. 4. Questions
2 Handout #1 Customizing the Barbershop Female Template You can edit your template to suit your needs or preferences. Follow these simple steps: 1. Go to the File Menu and click on ''New.'' 2. Drag and click on "Document From Template..." A dialog box will appear. 3. Click and drag until it says, "Look in: Choral Templates." 4. Click on "Barbershop Female," then click "Open." (Or you can just double click on "Barbershop Female") 5. To edit the layers, go to the Options Menu and drag down to "Document Options." Click on "Layers." 6. Put a checkmark in the first two boxes. Leave the next 3 boxes unchecked. Some people use 2 Layers in the Treble Clef and 2 Layers in the Bass Clef. We will use 4 Layers: Layer 1 for tenor, Layer 2 for lead, Layer 3 for bari, and Layer 4 for bass. Settings for Layers 1 and 3 should read "Freeze Stems Up." Settings for Layers 2 and 4 should read "Freeze Stems Down." Click "Apply." 7. Click on "Key Signatures." Remove the checkmark that says, "Cancel outgoing key signature." 8. Click on "Lyrics," then click on "Word Extensions." A "Word Extension" box appears. Under Note Alignment, click on "Stretch to note duration." Set the Offset: to "-0.05." Click "OK." 9. When you are all finished customizing everything, click "Apply" (ifnecessary), then click "OK." 1O. You can also go to the Page Layout Tool and set up the number of staves per page, the number of measures in each staff system, the spacing between staves, etc. 11. When you are finished making all of your changes to customize your barbershop template, go to the File Menu and "Save as...barbershop Female," and "Finale Template File (*.FTM)" When it asks, "Do you want to replace it?" Click "Yes."
3 Page 1 I Believe in Music 1. Start a new document from the "Barbershop Female" Template. 2. Put the document into Scroll View. 3. Go to the Options Menu to change the beaming. Click on "Document Options." A "Document Options" box appears. Click on "Beams." Remove the checkmark that is beside "Beam four eighth notes together in common time." Click "Apply," then click "OK." 4. Enter the appropriate key signature and time signature. 5. Set up the pickup measure. Go to the Options Menu and click on "Pickup Measure." A "Pickup Measure..." box appears. Click on the picture of the quarter note, then click "OK." 6. Enter the pickup notes by using Simple Entry or SpeedyEntry. EITHER. 7. Enter the first four measures of the lead line using Simple Entry. Go to the Simple Entry Tool and click on Layer 2. Click on the picture ofthe quarter note (or push "5" on the computer). Your cursor now looks like a quarter note. Drag the quarter note cursor to the Bb space and click the mouse. 8. Continue to add the lead line using tins same procedure. Click on the eighth note picture (or push "4" on the computer) to use eighth notes. Click on the half note picture (or push "6" on the computer) plus the picture of the dot to use dotted half notes. Click on the picture of the flat when the note has a flat in front of it. Click on the picture of the natural when the note has a natural in front of it. Click on the tie (or push "t" on the computer) to put a tie in the music. To make a rest, push "r" on the computer. 9. Click on the tape recorder playbutton to hear the lead line. Fix any mistakes. 1O. Save your work. 11. Switch to Layer 1 and use the computer keyboard to enter the tenor part. Push "5" on the computer to make the cursor a quarter note. Now type the letter "a" on the computer. You can type the letter names ofthe notes to enter the notes on the staff. Just malce sure you use the numbers to make the correct rhythmic value. Hold down the shift key and push the down arrow to move the note down an octave, or push the up arrow to move the note up an octave. 12. Play it back and fix any mistakes you hear. 13. Save your work. 14. Switch to Layer 3 and use one of the procedures from above to enter the bari part. 15. Playitback and fix any mistakes you hear. 16. Save your work. 17. Switch to Layer 4 and use one of the procedures from above to enter the bass part. 18. Play it back and fix any mistakes you hear. 19. Save your work.
4 Intennediate Finale Page Enter Measures #5-8 of the lead line using Speedy Entry without the MIDI keyboard. Go to the Speedy Entry Tool and click on Layer 2. A box appears. Click on Measure #5 in the treble clef. Go to the Speedy Menu and deselect "Use MIDI keyboard for input." 21. Move the up or down arrow on the computer until the cursor is on the "F" space. Push "4" on the computer keyboard to create an eighth note. Push "5" on the computer keyboard to create a quarternote. Push "6" on the computer keyboard to create a half note, then push the "period" key to make it a dotted half note. Push the "=" sign to create a tie. Push "4" on the computer, then push the "Backspace" key to make an eighth rest. Continue entering the lead line using the same procedure. Push the "-" sign to put a flat in front of a note. Push the "+" sign to raise the note 12 step. Push the "*,, sign to put a natural in front of a note. Push the letter "p" on the computer keyboard to putparentheses around an accidental. 22. Save your work. 23. When Measures #5-8 ofthe lead line are finished, push the play button to hear the lead line. Fix any mistakes. 24. Save your work. 25. Switch to Layer 1 and use the same procedure to enter the tenor part. 26. Save your work. 27. Playitback and fix any mistakes you hear. 28. Save your work. 29. Switch to Layer 3 and use the same procedure to enter the bari part. 30. Playit back and fix any mistakes you hear. 31. Save your work. 32. Switch to Layer 4 and use the same procedure to enter the bass part. 33. Playit back and fix any mistakes you hear. 34. Save your work. OR. 35. Enter the first 8 measures ofthe lead line using Speedy Entry with MIDI. Go to the Speedy Entry Tool and click on Layer 2. A box appears over the first measure. Go to the Speedy Menu and make sure there is a checkmark beside "Use MIDI keyboard for input." 36. Hold down the "G" note on the MIDI keyboard while pushing "4" for an eighth note on the computer keyboard. Repeat for the second "G" note. Hold down the "G" note while pushing "6" for a halfnote. 37. Continue entering the lead line using this same procedure. Push "5" for a quarter note, "6" for a half note - then type a period for the dotted half note. Push the "=" sign to create a tie. Push the "-" sign to put a flat in front ofa note. Push the "+" sign to put a natural in front of a note. Push the "*,, sign to put a natural in front of a note. Push the letter "p" on the computer keyboard to put parentheses around an accidental. 38. When Measures #1-8 of the lead line are finished, push the green recorder button to hear the lead line. Fix any mistakes.
5 Page Save your work. 40. Switch to Layer 1 and use the same procedure to enter the tenor part. 41. Save your work. 42. Play it back and fix any mistakes you hear. 43. Save your work. 44. Switch to Layer 3 and use the same procedure to enter the bari part. 45. Save your work. 46. Play it back and fix any mistakes you hear. 47. Save your work. 48. Switch to Layer 4 and use the same procedure to enter the bass part. 49. Play it back and fix any mistakes you hear. 50. Put in the slur markings for all the parts in Measures #2 and 3. Go to the Smart Shape Tool and click on the picture of the Slur. Double-click right above the G in the lead line and drag it to the right until it stretches across three notes. When the 3 rd note is higwighted, release the mouse. Use the same procedure to add the slurs to the other parts. 51. Add a double barline at the end of measure #8 by going to the Measure Tool. Double-click on Measure #8 and a "Measure Attributes" box appears. Click on the picture ofthe double barline and click "OK" 52. Add the lyrics by clicking on the Lyrics Tool. Go to the Lyrics Menu and click on "Edit Lyrics." An "Edit Lyrics" box appears. Type in the lyrics, separating the words into syllables as it would appear in the song. Look over your words and fix any typographical errors. Click "OK" 53. Go to the Lyrics Menu and click on "Click Assignment..." Make sure you are in Layer Line up the cursor under the first note in the lead line and click the mouse. You can click on each lead note this way, or you can enter all the lyrics at once. 55. To enter all the lyrics at once, hold down the Control key (or Options key on a Mac) lmder the next open lead note and click the mouse. All ofthe words will appear lmder all ofthe lead notes. Click and drag the triangle that is farthest to the left to move the baseline ofthe lyrics. Save your work. 56. Look at Measure #2. The lyrics are not lined up correctly. Shift the lyrics to the light until all the lyrics are under the correct notes. To do this, go to the Lyrics Menu and click on "Shift Lyrics..." A "Shift Lyrics" box appears. Make the box say "Shift Lyrics to the Right" and "Shift Syllables by One Note, to the End of the Lyric." Click "OK" Click on the "F" note in the lead line and all the lyrics will shift to the right. Check the rest of the lead line to shift the lyrics under the correct notes. 57. Fix the spacing between the lyrics. To do this, go to the Mass Edit Tool. Go to the Edit Menu and click on "Select AlL" Go to the Mass Mover Menu and click on "Music Spacing," then "Apply Note Spacing." Save your work. 58. Starting in Measure #9, enter all ofthe notes for all 4 parts for Measures #17-23.
6 Intennediate Finale Page Add the lyrics for Measures # Go to the Lyrics Menu and click on "Edit Lyrics." An "Edit Lyrics" box appears. Type in the lyrics for Measures # Look over your words and fix any typographical errors. Click "OK." 60. Add the lyrics for the tenor echo that is in Measure # 20 by clicking on the Lyrics Tool. Go to the lyrics menu and click on "Edit Lyrics." An "Edit Lyrics" box appears. 61. At the bottom of the box, click to Verse 2 by changing the number in the verse box. Type in the lyrics for the tenor echo, separating the words into syllables as it would appear in the song. Click "OK." 62. Go to the Lyrics Menu and click on "Click Assignment..." Make sure you are in Layer Line up the cursor over the first echo note in the tenor line and click the mouse. Click on each tenor note this way until all ofthe tenor lyrics are in place. Save your work. 64. Add the lyrics for the bari echo by using the same procedures as in Steps Make sure you are in the bari layer (Layer 3) and make sure you put the bari lyrics in a new verse (Verse 3). 65. Save your work. 66. To check your work, play it back while following the music on the computer. 67. Copy Measures #9-15. To do this, go to the Mass Edit Tool. Hold down the shift key and click and drag across the treble clef and bass clef so that both staves are highlighted. Scroll to Measure #15 and click on the bass staff. Let go ofthe shift key. 68. Click anywhere in the treble clef and drag it to the right until it is superimposed on the next empty measure. A "Copy Measures" box appears. Since we only want to copy it one time just click "OK." Save your work. 69. Put a key change in Measure #16. To do this, go to the Key Signature Tool and double click on Measure #16. A "Key Signature" box appears. Click on the up arrow 7 times, or scroll the up arrow until you see 4 sharps. Make sure it says "Transpose Notes Up." Click "OK." Now Measures #16-18 look exactly like Measures #49-51 inthe printedmusic. FinaleUsers Finale users can share infonnation and ideas or get help with problems.
