1 Finale For Begimlers Class Syllabus FINALE FOR BEGINNERS EVENT CODE(S)/ PERIOD(S)/TIME FRAME(S): ESTIMATED CLASS SIZE: TARGET LEARNERS: Thursday, Period 6, 10:20-11 :20 a.m. 1: Friday, Period 2, 11 :40 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. 30 General Elective SYLLABUS DESCRIPTION: Begin to work with the Finale music notation software program. Set up your manuscript for barbershop arrangements. Navigate simple note entry, speedy entry, playback controls, and lyrics. This class is for musicians with computer and mouse experience. OBJECTIVES: 1. To introduce the Finale music writing program. 2. To set up a manuscript for barbershop arrangements. 3. To navigate simple note entry, speedy entry, playback controls, and lyrics. MATERIALS: Finale 2006 Software MIDI Keyboard Computer Lab "I Believe in Music" Printed Music PROCEDURE: 1. Take a survey ofthe class to find out each one's computer experience. 2. Getting started with Finale: How to stmi the progrmn mld set up a template. 3. How to Customize your Bm'bershop Template. Mention Hmldout #1, but use the template that is already in the Finale progrmn. Set up Layers. 4. Show how to set up Time Signature & Key Signature. 5. Use "I Believe in Music" (Hmldout #2 & Printed Music) to show how to do simple entry, speedy entry, playback controls, mld lyrics. 6. Questions

2 Handout #1 Customizing the Barbershop Female Template You can edit your template to suit your needs or preferences. Follow these simple steps: 1. Go to the File Menu and click on "New." 2. Drag and click on "Document From Template..." A dialog box will appear. 3. Click and drag until it says, "Look in: Choral Templates." 4. Click on "Barbershop Female," then click "Open." (Or you can just double click on "Barbershop Female") 5. To edit the layers, go to the Options Menu and drag down to "Document Options." Click on "Layers." 6. Put a checkmark in the first two boxes. Leave the next 3 boxes unchecked. Some people use 2 Layers in the Treble Clef and 2 Layers in the Bass Clef. We will use 4 Layers: Layer 1 for tenor, Layer 2 for lead, Layer 3 for bari, and Layer 4 for bass. Settings for Layers 1 and 3 should read "Freeze Stems Up." Settings for Layers 2 and 4 should read "Freeze Stems Down." Click "Apply." 7. Click on "Key Signatures." Remove the checlg11ark that says, "Cancel outgoing key signature." 8. Click on "Lyrics," then click on "Word Extensions." A "Word Extension" box appears. Under Note Alignment, click on "Stretch to note duration." Set the Offset: to "-0.05." Click "OK." 9. When you are all finished customizing everything, click "Apply" (if necessary), then click "OK." 1O. You can also go to the Page Layout Tool and set up the mullber of staves per page, the number of measures in each staff system, the spacing between staves, etc. 11. When you are finished making all of your changes to customize your barbershop template, go to the File Menu and "Save as...barbershop Female," and "Finale Template File (*.FTM)" When it asks, "Do you want to replace it?" Click "Yes."

3 I Believe in Music Page 1 1. Stali a new document from the "Barbershop Female" Template. 2. Put the document into Scroll View. 3. Go to the Options Menu to Challge the bealning. Click on "Document Options." A "Document Options" box appeal s. Click on "Bealns." Remove the checkmal"k that is beside "Bealll four eighth notes together in conunon time." Click "Apply," then click "OK." 4. Go to the Time Signature Tool and double-click on the first measure. A "Time Signature" box appeal s. This is already set on Conunon Time. 5. Click on the altows beside "Number ofbeats" to see the top munber Challge. 6. Click on the arrows beside "Beat Duration" to see the bottom number Challge. 7. Reset an'ows back to Common Time, then click "OK." 8. Go to the Key Signature Tool and double-click the first measure. A "Key Signature" box appeal s. 9. Click on the down altow tlu'ee times until 3 flats appeal" alld then click "OK." 10. Set up the pickup measure. Go to the Options Menu alld click on "Pickup Measure." A "Pickup Measure..." box appears. Click on the picture of the. qualier note, then click "OK." 11. Enter the first four measures of the lead line using Simple Entry. Go to the Simple Entry Tool alld click on Layer 2. Click on the picture ofthe qualier note (or push "5" on the computer). Your cursor now looks like a qualier note. Drag the qualier note cursor to the Bb space and click the mouse. 12. Continue to add the lead line using this Sallle procedure. Click on the eighth note picture (or push "4" on the computer) to use eighth notes. Click on the halfnote picture (or push "6" on the computer) plus the picture ofthe dot to use dotted half notes. Click on the picture ofthe flat when the note has a flat in front ofit. Click on the picture ofthe natmal when the note has a natural in front ofit. Click on the tie (or push "t" on the computer) to put a tie in the music. To make a rest, push "1''' on the computer. 13. Click onthe tape recorder play buttonto heal' the lead line. Fix ally mistakes. 14. Save your work. 15. Switch to Layer 1 alld use the computer keyboard to enter the tenor pali. Push "5" on the computer to malce the cursor a qualier note. Now type the letter "a" on the computer. You can type the letter nalnes ofthe notes to enter the notes on the staff. Just make sure you use the munbers to make the correct rhythmic value. Hold down the shift key alld push the down altow to move the note down all octave, orpushthe up altow to move the note up an octave. 16. Play it back alld fix ally mistalces you heal". 17. Save your work. 18. Switch to Layer 3 alld use one ofthe procedures from above to enter the bal'i pali. 19. Play it back alld fix ally mistalces you hear. 20. Save your work. 21. Switch to Layer 4 alld use one ofthe procedures from above to enter the bass pali. 22. Play it back, fix ally mistalces you hear, alld save your work.

4 Page Enter Measures #5-8 of the lead line using Speedy Entry without the MIDI keyboard. Go to the Speedy Entry Tool and click on Layer 2. A box appears. Click on Measure #5 in the treble clef. Go to the Speedy Menu and deselect "Use MIDI keyboard for input." 24. Move the up or down arrow on the computer lmtil the cursor is on the "F" space. Push "4" on the computer keyboard to create an eighth note. Push "5" on the computer keyboard to create a quarter note. Push "6" on the computer keyboard to create a half note, then push the "period" key to make it a dotted half note. Push the "=" sign to create a tie. Push "4" on the computer, then push the "Backspace" key to make an eighth rest. Continue entering the lead line using the same procedure. Push the "-" sign to put a flat in front of a note. Push the "+" sign to raise the note Y2 step. Push the "*,, sign to put a natural in front of a note. Push the letter "p" on the computer keyboard to put parentheses around an accidental. 25. Save your work. 26. When Measures #5-8 of the lead line are finished, push the play button to hear the lead line. Fix any mistakes. 27. Save your work. 28. Switch to Layer 1 and use the same procedure to enter the tenor pali. 29. Save your work. 30. Play it back and fix ally mistakes you hear. 31. Save your work. 32. Switch to Layer 3 alld use the Salne procedure to enter the bal"i pali. 33. Play it back alld fix ally mistakes you heal". 34. Save your work. 35. Switch to Layer 4 and use the Salne procedure to enter the bass pali. 36. Play it back alld fix ally mistakes you heal". 37. Save your work. 38. Enter Measures #9-16 ofthe lead line using Speedy Entry with MIDI. Go to the Speedy Entry Tool and click on Layer 2. A box appeal"s. Click on Measure #9 in the treble clef. Go to the Speedy Menu alld select "Use MIDI keyboal"d for input." 39. Hold down the "G" note on the MIDI keyboard while pushing "4" for an eighth note on the computer keyboard. Repeat for the second "G" note. Hold down the "G" note while pushing "6" for a halfnote. 40. Continue entering the lead line using this Salne procedure. Push "5" for a qualier note, "6" for a half note - then type a period for the dotted half note. Use the Salne keys as in Step 25 to add ties, flats, naturals, pal"entheses, etc. 41. When Measures #9-16 ofthe lead line aloe finished, push the play button to hear the lead line. Fix ally mistakes. 42. Save your work. 43. Switch to Layer 1 alld use the same procedure to enter the tenor pali. 44. Save your work. 45. Play it back alld fix ally mistakes you heal".

5 Page Save your work. 47. Switch to Layer 3 and use the same procedure to enter the bari pali. 48. Save your work. 49. Play it back alld fix ally mistakes you hear. 50. Save your work. 51. Switch to Layer 4 and use the same procedure to enter the bass pali. 52. Play it back and fix ally mistakes you hear. 53. Save your work. 54. Put in the slur markings for all the palis in Measures #2, 3, alld 11. Go to the Smart Shape Tool alld click on the picture ofthe Slur. Double-click right above the G in the lead line alld drag it to the right until it stretches across three notes. When the 3 rd note is highlighted, release the mouse. Use the Sallle procedure to add the slurs to the other palis. 55. Add a double barline at the end of measure #16 by going to the Measure Tool. Double-click on Measure #16 alld a "Measure Attributes" box appeal's. Click on the picture ofthe double bal'line and click "OK," 56. Add the lyrics by clicking on the Lyrics Tool. Go to the Lyrics Menu alld click on "Edit Lyrics." An "Edit Lyrics" box appeal"s. Type in the lyrics, sepal'ating the words into syllables as it would appeal' in the song. Look over your words alld fix any typographical enors. Click "OK." 57. Go to the Lyrics Menu alld click on "Click Assignment..." Make sure you al'e in Layer Line up the cursor under the first note in the lead line alld click the mouse. You can click on each lead note this way, or you Call enter all the lyrics at once. 59. To enter all the lyrics at once, hold down the Control key (or Options key on a Mac) under the next open lead note alld click the mouse. All ofthe words will appear under all of the lead notes. Click alld drag the triallgle that is fal,thest to the left to move the baseline ofthe lyrics. Save your work. 60, Look at Measure #2. The lyrics al'e not lined up correctly. Shift the lyrics to the right until all the lyrics al'e under the conect notes, To do tllis, go to the Lyrics Menu alld click on "Sllift Lyrics..." A "Shift Lyrics" box appears. Make the box say "Shift Lyrics to the Right" alld "Shift Syllables by One Note, to the End ofthe Lyric." Click "OK," Click on the "F" note in the lead line alld all the lyrics will sllift to the right. Check the rest of the lead line to sllift the lyrics lulder the correct notes, 61. Fix the spacing between the lyrics. To do this, go to the Mass Edit Tool. Go to the Edit Menu alld click on "Select All." Go to the Mass Mover Menu alld click on "Music Spacing," then "Apply Note Spacing." Save your work. 62. Enter all ofthe notes for all 4 palis for Measures # Save your work. 63, Add the lyrics for Measures # Go to the Lyrics Menu alld click on "Edit Lyrics." An "Edit Lyrics" box appeal's. Type in the lyrics for Measures # Look over your words and fix ally typographical errors. Click "OK."

6 Finale For Begilmers 2006 International Education SymposimTI Page Add the lyrics for the tenor echo that is in Measme # 20 by clicking on the Lyrics Tool. Go to thelyrics menu and click on "Edit Lyrics." An "Edit Lyrics" box appears. 65. At the bottom of the box, click to Verse 2 by changing the number in the verse box. Type in the lyrics for the tenor echo, separating the words into syllables as it would appear in the song. Click "OK." 66. Go to the Lyrics Menu and click on "Click Assignment..." Make sme you are in Layer Line up the cmsor over the first echo note in the tenor line and click the mouse. You can click on each tenor note this way, or you can enter all the lyrics at once by holding down the Control key (or Options key on a Mac) as in Step 62. Click and drag the triangle that's fmihest to the left until the tenor lyrics appear over the tenor notes. Save yom work. 68. Add the lyrics for the bari echo by using the same procedmes as in Steps Make sme you are in the bari layer (Layer 3) and make sme you put the bari lyrics in a new verse (Verse 3). Save yom work.
