Getting Started If the NuEye tracking unit did not come already mounted on your communication device, you must mount it before you can start using eyegaze. For instructions on mounting a NuEye unit on an Accent 1400, see Appendix A on page 27 For instructions on mounting a NuEye unit on an Accent 1200 or 1200-M, see Appendix B on page 28. For instructions on mounting a NuEye unit on an Accent 1000 or 1000-M, see Appendix C on page 31. Recommendation While the client is getting used to the NuEye system, take frequent breaks to rest the client s eyes and relax his or her concentration. NuEye User s Guide 5

About Positioning Your Device The positioning of the eyegaze system in relation to the client is extremely important. The goal of positioning is to achieve a stable eye image for NuEye to track. Because of this, you will probably need to try out different positions. Appendix D on page 34 contains images of correct and incorrect positioning. You may find these images helpful as you set up the NuEye system. NuEye System Parameters The NuEye has an imaginary "eyebox" that measures approximately 10" x 12" x 9". As long as the client s eyes are within this area, they are in the view range of the NuEye system. At this time the client should be positioned somewhere between 18 and 30 inches from the Accent display screen. If the client moves in and out of the view area, the system will "remember" him or her. This means that once you set up the system you should not have to recalibrate it because of the client s body movement. Imaginary Eyebox (or Gazing Area) NuEye User s Guide 6

Being able to meet these positioning requirements will help you achieve success with the NuEye system: One eye (preferably two) within the eyebox. The client should be at least 18 inches from the Accent display screen but can be as far away as 30 inches. The client s nose must be aimed at, or slightly above, the midpoint or upper 2/3rds of the display screen. The client s face must be straight-on and/or parallel to the display screen. If the client is tilted due to positioning or posture, the Accent must be tilted at a similar angle so that his or her face is directly in front of and at least 18 inches away from the display. There can be no obstructions between the client s face and the Accent and NuEye system. Mount the device with the eyegaze unit on a wheelchair mount or table stand. Accessing Eyegaze Settings If this is the first time the Accent has been turned on, make sure the battery charger is plugged in. 1. Press the power button on the top of the case to turn your device on. The NuVoice application will open. 2. In NuVoice, open the Toolbox by selecting the Tools key on the front of the device or select the Tools key to the right of the text display area. 3. Select the Toolbox key from the small Tools menu that appears. 4. Select Access Method Menu from the Toolbox. 5. From the Access Method Menu, select Choose Different Access Method. 6. Select Eyegaze. The Access Method Menu will display Current Access Method: Eyegaze. NuEye User s Guide 7

Eyegaze Positioning Appendix D on page 34 contains images of correct and incorrect positioning. You may find these images helpful as you set up the NuEye system. Using the Eyegaze Positioning Screen From the Access Method Menu, select Eyegaze Positioning. The screen shows what the NuEye unit sees. When eyegaze is active, the Track Status box to the right of the image is green. To pause eyegaze, touch the Track Status box. The box turns red. To resume using eyegaze, touch the box again. Track Status box OK Button The options below the Track Status box allow you to control how feedback is displayed. Tracking Status Graphics Pupil Markers Glint Markers When Tracking Status Graphics is turned on, two small white ovals show the positioning of the client s eyes and positioning dots appear on the outer edges of the Track Status box to indicate correct or incorrect positioning. These dots assist you in correcting the positioning. When Tracking Status Graphics is turned off, only the two small ovals appear. When Pupil Markers is turned on, a small cross appears over each of the client s pupils. When Glint Markers is turned on, small dots indicate points of reflective glare. When necessary, make adjustments by using either or both of the following methods: Loosen and tighten the screws on the device mount to alter the position of the eyegaze unit until you see two solid white ovals in the Track Status box. Reposition the client s head slightly until you see two solid white ovals in the Track Status box. NuEye User s Guide 8

When the positioning is correct, select the OK button in the bottom right of the display to exit the menu. Correct Positioning Hint: When you want to pause the eyegaze system but still be able to make menu selections, touch the Track Status box or select the Pause/Resume button on the Access Method Menu. Touch the box or select Pause/Resume again to resume using eyegaze. Touch the display to make selections. NuEye User s Guide 9

Using the Track Status Box When Eye Track Status is set to On in the Eyegaze Access Method Menu, the Track Status box appears to the right of the status area. The Track Status box provides positioning feedback. The options below the box allow you to view more detailed feedback. Horizontal positioning marker Distance markers: Vertical positioning marker Graphical representation Numerical representation Eyegaze positioning markers Eyegaze Positioning Markers The two white oval eyegaze markers track the client s basic position relative to the display. When positioning is correct, the eyes are level and both markers are white. The image to the left of the box will show most of the top of the nose to the tip and a normal amount of nostrils. When one of the markers is white and the other is faded, the client s head is turned at an angle so that the eyes are not equidistant from the display. Reposition the client or device until both markers are white. Horizontal and Vertical Positioning Markers When Tracking Status Graphics is turned on: Horizontal and vertical positioning are correct when the white dots are positioned in the center of the top and right sides of the box. When the positioning is off, reposition the client or device gradually until the markers are centered on their respective sides. When Tracking Status Graphics is turned off: The horizontal and vertical positioning markers are not visible. Distance Markers When Tracking Status Graphics is turned on: The Track Status box shows the distance the client s eyes are from the display. The distance is displayed in small numbers in the bottom left corner of the box and displayed graphically by a segmented bar. The distance must be between 18 and 30 inches. When the dot is positioned toward the top of the bar, the client is near the minimum distance. When the dot is positioned toward the bottom of the bar, the client is near the maximum distance. When the optimal distance is attained, the dot will be at or near the center of the bar. When Tracking Status Graphics is turned off: The distance markers are not visible. NuEye User s Guide 10

When Only One Active Eye Can be Tracked 1. Select OK at the bottom right of the display to exit from the Eyegaze Positioning menu. 2. Select Customize Eyegaze Settings. 3. Select Calibration Settings. 4. In the Active Eye option, use the arrows to select Left Only or Right Only as the Active Eye. 5. Select OK to exit this menu. 6. Select OK to exit the next menu. 7. Select Eyegaze Positioning from the Eyegaze menu and begin to position the client and device. When the Client is Wearing Glasses Initially, when positioning the NuEye unit for a client who wears glasses, you will most likely see dots around the eyes if the Glint Markers option is turned on. These indicate that the eyegaze unit is seeing only the reflections from the client s glasses. In this case, you must work at positioning the client and/or device until there is no glare coming from the glasses and the Track Status box shows you some feedback. When you are satisfied with the positioning, select the OK key in the bottom right of the display. NuEye User s Guide 11

Selecting and Loading a Profile The NuEye system has several pre-defined profiles that you can choose from to help the client get started. Calibrate Now Calibration gives the NuEye system the information it needs to track the client s gaze. Select Calibrate Now to start the calibration process. A solid colored screen will appear and the client will be shown a sequence of stimulus points. Have the client focus on the center of each point with his or her eyes as it moves across the screen. When the calibration is complete, the system will return to the Eyegaze Access Method Menu and be ready for use. Default calibration settings will be used unless you change them in the Calibration Settings. See page 20; see also Calibrate Now on page 13. Eyegaze Positioning When you select this key, you will see what the eyegaze system and the Track Status box are seeing. This option will be of most use to the person aligning and setting up the eyegaze system. When positioning is correct, two very small dots appear near each of the client s pupils. The Track Status box will show two white circles. No arrows or grey circles will be displayed in the Track Status box. When you are using the Positioning option, the Track Status box is always visible. Positioning is explained in detail at the beginning of this manual, and examples can be found in Appendix D on page 34. NuEye User s Guide 15

Eye Track Status When Eye Track Status is set to On in the Eyegaze Access Method Menu, the Track Status box appears to the right of the status area. The Track Status box contains two dots that represent how the system sees your eyes. This can be a useful tool in helping you to see that the system is tracking your eyes correctly. If you want a larger Track Status box, see the next section, Track Status Size. When Eyetrack Status is turned on and you are using the eyegaze system, the Track Status box is green. If you pause the eyegaze system, the Track Status box turns red. Touch the Track Status box to pause eyegaze. Touch it again to resume using eyegaze. Track Status Size The Track Status Size option controls the size of the Track Status box. Small places the Track Status box over the Help key to the right of the status area. Large increase the size of the box and places it on the left side of the screen. NuEye User s Guide 16

Manage Eyegaze Profiles An eyegaze profile consists of a combination of the eyegaze settings you have selected from the Customize Eyegaze Settings menu and the actual data from the calibration you performed. There are also several pre-defined profiles that you can select from when you first set up your eyegaze system. You can also create and save profiles of your own. To manage profiles, select Manage Eyegaze Profiles from the Eyegaze Access Method Menu. Load Eyegaze Profile Several pre-defined profiles are available. These contain eyegaze settings that have the best chance of working well for a beginner or advanced client. When you first set up your system, you may find it easier to select one of these profiles to use while the client is learning the system. The Load Eyegaze Profile key allows you to load any of these pre-defined profiles or a profile that you created and saved to a USB flash drive. The flash drive must be plugged into your device in order to do this. 1. From the Eyegaze Access Method Menu, select Manage Eyegaze Profiles. 2. Select Load Eyegaze Profile. 3. Select the profile that best applies to the client. If the client has never used an eyegaze system before, select Beginner. 4. You will see a yellow box asking if you want to copy these eyegaze settings to all areas. If you select No, the settings will be copied only to the area you are currently using. If the client is a beginner or novice, we suggest you select No. If you select Yes, the settings will be copied to all user areas in the device. You will also be asked if you want to set all areas to eyegaze access. If you select Yes, you will be using eyegaze access in each area in the device. 5. Select OK to exit the Profiles menu and return to the Eyegaze Access Method Menu. NuEye User s Guide 17

Save Current Settings and Calibration to a Profile This key allows you to save an eyegaze profile to the default Profiles location in your device or to a USB flash drive. 1. From the Eyegaze Access Method Menu, select Manage Eyegaze Profiles. 2. Select Save Current Settings and Calibration to a Profile. 3. After saving a profile, select Load Eyegaze Profile to load the profile into a user area at any time. If you are working with multiple clients using one device, you may want to save the eyegaze profiles of your clients. Then you can simply load each client s profile into a user area (or globally if that was selected as the Eyegaze Calibration option). Important Information on Resetting to Factory Defaults If you need to reset your device to the factory defaults (select Reset to Factory Defaults from the Maintenance Menu) and you want to keep your calibration, you must save your eyegaze profile to a USB flash drive before you reset the device. After resetting your device, select Load Eyegaze Profile to reload the profile. If you use profiles, it s a good idea to save them to a flash drive as a backup. Delete Eyegaze Profile This key allows you to delete any profiles that you no longer use. Pause/Resume This key allows you to pause eyegaze so you can read the options, and then resume when you are ready. NuEye User s Guide 18

Customize Eyegaze Settings Selecting Customize Eyegaze Settings from the Eyegaze Access Method Menu opens the Customize Eyegaze Settings menu. Selection Type Selection Type provides Auto, Blink, and Switch options. Selecting one of these options displays one or two related options. Auto When Auto is selected, the device makes key selections automatically. When Auto is selected, the Dwell Time option is displayed. After the dwell time you set passes, the device automatically selects the key the client is looking at. When necessary, use the arrow keys to set a longer or shorter dwell time. Blink When Blink is selected, the client can blink to make a selection. When Blink is selected, the Minimum Blink Duration and Maximum Blink Duration options are displayed. You must set both minimum and maximum blink durations. The defaults are.30 for minimum and.80 for maximum. If you want to use Blink, try using the defaults first before you change anything. If you need to change the defaults, follow these guidelines. The minimum duration should be long enough that normal blinks do not activate anything. The maximum duration should be long enough that the client finishes a selection blink before reaching the maximum time. You do not want to make the maximum duration time so long that, if the client turns his or her head away from the display screen and then brings it back, the system sees that as an activation. Four seconds would be too long for a maximum duration for most people. NuEye User s Guide 19

Switch When Switch is selected, you can plug in and use a single switch to make key selections. When Switch is selected, the Acceptance Time option is displayed. The client looks at the key he or she wants and presses and holds the switch. When the acceptance time you set passes, the key will be activated. Predictive Selection Predictive Selection works best with Unity MAPs and vocabulary. When Predictive Selection is turned on, keys that do not produce messages are turned off. If you touch or scan to them, nothing will happen. Only keys that contain or are part of actual stored messages will work. Auto Repeat This option lets you choose how fast a key will repeat itself when you hold it down. Copy Current Settings to All Areas This copies all your eyegaze settings except the actual calibration to all the user areas in your device. When you select this option, you will see a yellow information box asking if you want to do this. Respond Yes to use your settings in every area or select No to keep your settings in your current area only. For information about using a specific calibration in one or more user areas, see Eyegaze Calibration on page 22. Calibration Settings If you aren t getting good calibration results using the defaults, use the options in this menu to refine the settings, then try again. Stimulus Type The stimulus is the item the client s eyes will focus on as it moves around the display during calibration. Point Point 2 Cross Image A small circle A small circle with a dot in the center A small cross with a dot in the center An icon or picture that you select. An icon or image is helpful if the client has difficulty looking at a specific point or is better motivated by a personal image. If you select Point, Point 2, or Cross, you can also change the pointer color. NuEye User s Guide 20

If you want to use an image, the first time you select this option you will see a yellow box asking, Use Icon? If you select Yes, you are taken to the Icon Categories page where you can select the icon you want to use. The icon shows up on your Calibration Settings screen to remind you what image you have selected. You will also see a new option, Change Image. Use this if you decide you want a different Icon. If you select No to Use icon? a screen listing your drives and folders will open. You can select any image (or picture) you already have stored on your device or you can import an icon or picture stored on a USB flash drive (the flash drive must be plugged into your device). Stimulus Size The Stimulus Size option increases or decreases the size of the stimulus type you selected. 20 is the default a small size. For the best calibration results you want the stimulus size to be as small as the client s eyes can easily follow. Active Eye If both of the client s eyes function normally, select Both. If only one eye is active, or if one eye functions better than the other, select Right or Left depending on which is the good eye. The eyegaze system will calibrate using the good eye. Stimulus Sound The Stimulus Sound option sets the sound the client will hear as the stimulus moves around the display. Available settings are No (no sound); Standard Beep; Sound 1, Sound 2, Sound 3, or Sound 4. If you select one of the four Sound options, you will hear a preview of that sound. Continue through the options until you hear the sound you want. Keyboard Step-through When Keyboard Step-through is set to No, calibration proceeds automatically through the gaze-points. The client will hear a sound (if a stimulus beep or sound is selected), and the stimulus will move automatically to the next gaze-point. If you select Yes, Use Spacebar is displayed for Keyboard Step-through. With this setting, you must connect a USB keyboard to the device. The setting allows the partner to step the client through calibration by pressing the Spacebar on a keyboard when the client is gazing at the stimulus. Calibration Points The Calibration Points option indicates how many gaze-points on the screen the stimulus will jump to during calibration. In general, the more points the client must follow, the more accurate the eyegaze system will be. However, if the client can easily lock onto only two points, you may find that this produces good enough results. NuEye User s Guide 21

Calibration Area With the default calibration area (100%), the eyegaze system will display gaze-points to look at during calibration. Some of these gaze-points will be at the very edges of the display screen and may be difficult to see or focus on. If you find this to be true for the client, decrease the calibration area. This will move the calibration points in from the edges of the screen. We suggest you start decreasing in increments of five (95%, 90%, etc.). Reducing the calibration area decreases the screen size, which means that some accuracy will be lost. Select Background Color The Select Background Color option allows you to change the background color of the calibration screen. You want the client to see calibration points easily. Selecting a background color that does not contrast well with the default light grey screen color may make it difficult for NuEye to lock onto the client s eyes when he or she is using the default display. Pupil size may change due to the difference in color. Select Pointer Color The Select Pointer Color option allows to you to change the color of the pointer you selected. You want the client to see the pointer easily, so select a color that contrasts well with the background color. Eyegaze Calibration Select Global if you want your calibration to be used in all user areas. Select Per User Area if you want to perform a separate calibration for each user area. If you want all your other eyegaze settings copied to all user areas, select Copy Current Settings to All Areas under Customize Eyegaze Settings. Validate After Calibration Select Yes if you want to see calibration results at the end of a calibration. Select No if you do not want the calibration validated. Validation Results If you select Text, then perform a calibration, four extra points will be available to look at. At the end of the calibration, an information box will describe the accuracy of the calibration, showing the deviation in degrees of the X axis and Y axis. The lower the numbers, the more accurate the calibration. If you select Graphic, you will see a graphic representation of the calibration results. Show Last Validation Results If you want to see the results of the most recent calibration, select Show Last Validation Results. Validate Now If you select Validate Now, you will perform an immediate calibration. At the end of the validation you will see the results in either a textual or graphical format. Pointer Color The Pointer Color option allows you to change the color of the pointer. Pointer Type The pointer shows what particular object the client is focusing on. When Circle or Square is selected and the client focuses on a key, a circle or a square appears over the key to show that s where the client s focus is. If the client dwells on the key long enough, it will be selected. When Circle or Square is selected, additional options are available: Pointer Size, Pointer Mode, Pointer Border, and Pointer Transparency. When None, is selected, no pointer will be visible, and you will have no feedback to show where the client s eyes are focused or what the client might be selecting on the screen. Pointer Size The Pointer Size option allows you to make the circle or square pointer larger or smaller. Pointer Mode When Animated is selected, the circle or square pointer will shrink in size while the key is being selected. It s an easy way to tell that the client has hit his or her target. If you select Static, the pointer maintains the same size while the key is selected. NuEye User s Guide 24

Pointer Border Selecting any Pointer Border value greater than 0 puts a darker border around the perimeter of the circle or square. Increase or decrease the value to adjust the thickness of the border. Pointer Transparency 90% transparency means that the circle or square is almost clear. You can barely tell it is on a key. 0% means the pointer is completely opaque. You cannot see through it to read any text that might be on a key. Tracking Settings The Tracking Settings help to adjust the speed and smoothness of pointer/cursor movements. If you have set up the eyegaze system and aren t satisfied with the smoothness of the pointer movements, try changing the settings using this option. Smoothing When you select a number in the Smoothing option, the eyegaze system will continually average the last X number of eye movement signals it receives. This helps to refine pointer movements. The lower the number of samples the closer the cursor follows the actual gaze-point. The higher the number of samples the more the cursor lags behind the actual gaze-point. If the pointer/cursor is very jumpy, increase the number of samples. The higher you increase this number, the smoother (but slower) the pointer movement will be. Selectable numbers range from 2 to 45. Filter Method The available filtering methods for tracking are Stream, Snap, Group, Stream + Snap, and Stream + Group. Stream is the default. Acceleration If the cursor movement is smooth but too slow for the client, increase the Acceleration number. Acceleration to Threshold If Acceleration is set to a speed that is good for the client but he or she finds it difficult to lock onto a key to select it, set a threshold for the cursor speed. This will tell the system to use the selected acceleration speed until it reaches the threshold you set. At that point the cursor will move more slowly until the client selects the key he or she wants. This option is helpful when the client wants to make a big movement across the display and then select a key. The large movement can go at the selected acceleration speed. This will move the cursor across the display fairly rapidly. When threshold is reached, the cursor will slow down so the client can lock in on the key he or she wants to select. Try these options using the defaults first. If those are not satisfactory, use trial and error to find the best results. NuEye User s Guide 25

Advanced Settings Fixation Window X and Fixation Window Y These two options refer to the point at which the client stops looking at the screen in general and begins to fixate on the area where he or she wants to make a selection. Think of the fixation area as a window that contains the key the client wants. This window can be either large or small. Fixation Window X is the horizontal axis and Fixation Window Y is the vertical axis of that window. The defaults give you a very small window. The smaller the fixation area (or window), the more precise the client s movements can be. However, if the client s gaze is very jittery, a larger window will be needed. If the defaults are not working, experiment with these two options to see if they help. Default Geometry This option returns the NuEye unit to its default angle setting, and supplies the eyegaze system with other default information about the unit. Reset Eyegaze Settings to Default Use this option when you want to restore all settings to their defaults and start over. Off-Screen Key Settings Off-Screen Keys Settings allows you to turn the off-screen keys on or off. Off-Screen Pause Key When Off-Screen Pause Key is turned on, the client can pause or resume tracking by gazing just above the top edge (middle) of the screen. Paused or Active will be displayed on the screen. Off-Screen Tools Key When Off-Screen Tools Key is turned on, the client can select the Tools key by gazing just beyond the left edge of the screen. Right Off-Screen Keys When Right Off-Screen Keys is turned on, the client can access the off-screen keys by gazing just beyond the right edge of the screen. Bottom Off-Screen Keys When Bottom Off-Screen Keys is turned on, the client can access the off-screen keys by gazing just beyond the bottom edge of the screen. Activate Text Area The Activate Text Area option allows the client to gaze at the text display area of the device to activate it. If Speech is turned on, the device will speak any text that is displayed. NuEye User s Guide 26

Appendix E: Cleaning the NuEye Unit Never immerse the NuEye unit in water! Never use abrasives or cleaning cloths that will scratch the transparent area of the unit. You received a microfiber (lint-free) cleaning cloth with your NuEye unit. Use this cloth to wipe the NuEye enclosure and its transparent screen. If the unit needs more than a dry wipe-down, dampen this cloth or another lint-free cloth. Damp means wrung out, never dripping. Dry the unit thoroughly with a dry lint-free cloth. If the transparent area on the front of the unit gets smeary or visibly dirty, place a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth and clean the transparent area. Polish the area with a dry part of your cloth. Keep the microfiber (lint-free) cloth handy and wipe the transparent area daily. See your Accent hardware manual for more information about cleaning and disinfecting your Accent. NuEye User s Guide 38
