23 Example Importing data. Visitors to Bilbao. The manager of the Bilbao Tourist Office wants to study the evolution of tourism using data on visitors to Bilbao: TV: Total number of visitors. SPV: Visitors coming from Spain. FV: Foreign visitors. These data may be found in the file tourism.xls, in the sheet called series. a. Load these data into Gretl. b. Save the data in a Gretl file called tourism.gdt. Visitors c. 27 Example Importing data from Excel. The dialog box asks about the type of data you are importing. By default, Gretl interprets the data as cross-sectional. If you know that your data file consists of time series data, click Yes and then give information about the structure of the data. 37 Example Loading a Gretl user file. The easier way to verify the data values is to highlight the desired variables and execute a right mouse click. 39 Example Loading a Gretl user file. gretl: display data The menu bar enables us to Save data in different formats: RTF (MS Word), tab separated, comma separated and plain text. Print data in any selected printer. Copy data in different formats: RTF (MS Word), tab separated, comma separated and plain text. In this way, it is possible to paste these data directly to another file. Find a specific value, category, name of the variable,... Sort data by a variable of interest. Reformat data. There are two options: to keep the standard format or to indicate how many significant figures or decimal places we want to show. Windows. 42 Example Editing attributes. Note that the Descriptive label column is blank for the three variables. To label one variable (for instance, Y ), first highlight the variable with the cursor. Then you have two alternatives: a. go up to the Menu Bar and click Variable > Edit attributes b. right-click the highlighted variable and select the option Edit attributes. 43 Example Editing attributes. This yields a dialog box where you can assign variable descriptions and display names. Write the description of the selected variable and click on the icon Apply. Change the name of some variables: female to F, hs to HS, college to C and grad to P. b. Write some notes about the work done so far and save them in the session. c.
