1 Section 1-3A: Creating a hierarchically numbered list style The key to making automatically numbered headings is to create a numbered list style and then link it to the relevant Heading styles. Here we will do so, linking styles Heading 1, Heading 2 and Headingi3. 1. With the Home tab displayed, click on the Style Pane launcher within the Styles group. The Styles pane opens. 2. At the bottom of the Styles pane, click on the New Style icon. The Create New Style from Formatting dialog box opens. 3. With the Create New Style from Formatting dialog box displayed enter a name for the list style e.g. Headings. NOTE: make a mental note of the name you have used, as it is this style you ll need to modify later if the automated numbering doesn t work as expected. 4. Click on the drop-down arrow for Style type: and select List. The options available within the Create New Style from Formatting dialog box will change to suit a List style. 5. Click the Format button and select Numbering The Modify Multilevel List dialog box opens. In the next steps, you will now link the 1 st level of numbering with Heading 1 and format the number. London School of Economics & Political Science 1 lse.ac.uk/imt/training
2 6. With the Modify Multilevel list dialog box displayed, click the More >> button to show more options. 7. In the upper left corner of the dialog box, under Click level to modify ensure 1 is highlighted. 8. Select and delete everything shown in the Enter formatting for number box. The box is now empty. 9. Click on the drop-down arrow for Link level to style: and select Heading 1. London School of Economics & Political Science 2 lse.ac.uk/imt/training
3 10. Open the options list for Number style for this level and click the style you require. (For our purposes, select 1, 2, 3.) The number or letter is added to the Enter formatting for number box. Note: If you would like the word Chapter to appear before the chapter number, type Chapter followed by a space, before the number 1 in the Enter formatting for number: box. 11. Open the list under Follow number with and select Nothing. 12. Click into the Enter formatting for number box, placing the cursor immediately after the number. Then type a colon and space, or any other combination of spacing and symbols you wish to use to separate the number (in this case Chapter 1) from the name that follows it. 13. Within the Position section of the dialog box, click the button to Set for All Levels The Set for All Levels dialog box opens. 14. Change the settings so that each of the three boxes shows 0 cm. 15. Click OK to close the Set for All Levels dialog box. In the next steps, you will now link the 2 nd level of numbering with Heading 2 and format the number. 16. In the upper left corner of the dialog box, under Click level to modify select Select and delete everything shown in the Enter formatting for number box. The box is now empty. 18. Click on the drop-down arrow below Link level to style: and select Heading 2. London School of Economics & Political Science 3 lse.ac.uk/imt/training
