2 Additions and Updates TotalView FlexNet License Changes TotalView now includes version of FlexNet Publisher software. This version corrects a stack overflow security hazard that existed in the previous TotalView-supplied version, and is more versatile with respect to network interface types. On Linux for i386, x86-64, and power processors, the FlexNet license server and the associated toolworks daemon require compliance with the Linux Standard Base 3. Specifically, these programs require a run-time linker with a file name that denotes LSB3 compliance. This requirement can be met by installing the "lsb-3" package for the host where the license server is to be run. (Alternatively, it is possible to meet the requirement by creating a symbolic link with the appropriate name (/lib/ld-lsb.so.3, /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3, or /lib64/ld-lsb-ppc64.so, respectively) and pointing to the default run-time linker. Creation of such links is exactly how the lsb-3 packages meet the requirement.) TotalView license configuration will no longer depend on the availability of a network interface named eth0. On some systems, the license configuration procedure will identify several different host IDs. Any one of these IDs may be used. FlexNet documentation is no longer available in HTML form. Instead, a single PDF document covering License Administration is supplied in the flexlm-(version)/doc directory. One known issue exists in this FlexNet version which can affect TotalView licensing. For license files that contain multiple INCREMENT clauses with different VENDOR_STRING values, the FlexNet sorting algorithm may cause the set of INCREMENTS to be only partly recognized. A workaround is available by adding an identical SORT specification to each INCREMENT. For example, "sort=100" may be added to each INCREMENT. The identical SORT specifications disable FlexNet's sorting (which is not required by TotalView), thus avoiding the bug. 3 TotalView Changes to Use SSH to Launching Remote Debugging Servers TotalView changes the default server launch command from rsh to ssh. Due to security issues, many systems are not supporting rsh style remote login and are requiring use of ssh. You can override this behavior by setting the environment variable TVDSVRLAUNCHCMD to the server launch command that should be used. NVIDIA CUDA 5.0 and 5.5 support TotalView now supports CUDA versions 5.0 and 5.5. With CUDA 5.0 TotalView does not support dynamic parallelism at all. With CUDA 5.5 we have limited support for dynamic parallelism. You should be able to use TotalView in the CUDA 5.5 runtime with applications that display dynamic parallelism; however we plan improvements to our functionality for displaying the relationships between dynamically launched kernels and navigating the various running kernels. Intel Xeon Phi Symmetric Mode & Memory Debugging Support Xeon Phi support has been further extended to include Xeon Phi Symmetric Mode across a Xeon Phi cluster. TotalView's support for Intel Xeon Phi (MIC architecture) has been also extended to include memory debugging with MemoryScape for Native and Symmetric modes. MemoryScape functionality is not yet available for Offload mode programs. Mac OS X Mavericks Support TotalView now supports the Macintosh OS X Mavericks platform. See the section Troubleshooting Mac OS X Installations in the TotalView Reference Guide for help on installing TotalView on Mac OS X machines. 6 Known Issues Physical console access needed to run TotalView on Mac OS X Mountain Lion & Mavericks On Mountain Lion and Mavericks, OS X security policies require that users meet a password challenge in order to use TotalView, and the challenge can only be issued to the console (the OS X desktop). After the password challenge is met once, TotalView can be run repeatedly from the same login session without further challenges. TotalView Remote Display Client Hang on Mac OS X Mountain Lion & Mavericks If you are using the Remote Display Client on Mac OS X Mountain Lion & Mavericks the application may freeze if more than one Terminal window is open. To get around this issue set the display number in the Terminal s Advanced Options dialog to a value that will not conflict with another user. Memory Debugging MPI Programs on SGI systems Need Special Linking The TotalView and MemoryScape memory debugging Heap Interposition Agent (HIA) technology conflicts with the SGI memory manager when used in MPI programs. The easiest way to get around this problem is to disable the SGI memory manager by unsetting the MPI_MEM_ALIGN environment variable. Without this variable set the SGI memory manager will not be loaded and the HIA will work correctly enabling memory debugging to take place. Cray Cascade XC30 eslogin If you are using the new eslogin nodes on the Cray, attempts to start TotalView on aprun from the eslogin nodes will not work. TotalView will start up, but when control is transferred to the compute nodes, TotalView will end up focused on ssh, rather than aprun itself. On the eslogin node, aprun is really an eswrap function which starts up an ssh session on the compute node which then runs aprun. TotalView will pick up the ssh program, but will not be able to follow it as it invokes the real aprun. We have a preliminary solution for this issue. 7 CUDA 5.x Dynamic Parallelism Not Fully Supported With CUDA 5.0 TotalView does not support dynamic parallelism at all. With CUDA 5.5 we have limited support for dynamic parallelism. You should be able to use TotalView in the CUDA 5.5 runtime with applications that display dynamic parallelism; however we plan improvements to our functionality for displaying the relationships between dynamically launched kernels and navigating the various running kernels. CUDA 4 Layered Textures Unsupported TotalView adds support for CUDA 4.2 but does not yet support CUDA 4 textures. If you try to examine a layered texture in the TotalView Data Pane, a Bad address message will be displayed and you will see ERROR: Reading Texture memory not currently supported displayed on the console. If you require layered textures support, please contact TotalView support at tvsupport@roguewave.com and let us know how you are using textures so we can develop the best solution to support you. Ubuntu and Above Debugging Support Beginning with Ubuntu 10.10, the kernel places a security restriction that prevents attaching to a process that is not your own or was not directly started by the current process. This security restriction restricts TotalView users from debugging applications they did not start.
