CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION FEATURES: FULLY FEATURED ANSI TERMINAL EMULATION INCLUDES REVERSE VIDEO, BLINKING TEXT, ETC. ADDED CODES TO SUPPORT LARGE CHARACTER TEXT ALL I/O IS OPTICALLY ISOLATED 8 LINE BY 40 CHARACTER BACK-LIT LCD DISPLAY WITH GRAPHICS LARGE FULL-TRAVEL 30 KEY WATERPROOF KEYPAD 9 SOFT KEYS TACTILE FEEDBACK The MODEL 900 ANSI Terminal is a rugged device capable of transferring data to and from many types of computers and industrial control equipment. The MODEL 900 is an ideal choice for an operator interface in an industrial environment where the machine, process, or motion controller will contain all of the "intelligence" of the system. The controller will send information and prompts to the operator via the MODEL 900's display. Data entered on the keypad of the MODEL 900 is transmitted directly to the host controller. With a MODEL 900, an operator can view and change machine parameters, or follow instructions to perform operations. Users no longer have to fumble about with clumsy switches, thumbwheels, and indicator lights. Instead, a back-lit 8 line by 40 character "super-twist" LCD display, and a large full-travel 30 key waterproof keypad prompts and "listens" to the operator through machine operations. 1.1 Functional Description The MODEL 900 is housed in a rugged cast housing which is meant to be flush mounted in an equipment panel. A full gasket and a rigid mounting system form a water tight seal about the opening. The display is sealed, and the keypad is constructed of a water tight silicone rubber. If being water tight is not critical to your application, the MODEL 900 can be wall mounted with supplied brackets. The keypad on the front of the MODEL 900 is organized into three color coded groups: WHITE - NUMERIC ENTRY BLUE - ACTION - CURSOR, ENTER, BACKSPACE, DELETE, ESC YELLOW - FUNCTION KEYS The bottom of the MODEL 900 incorporates the entire connector system for power and serial I/O. Figure 1.1 diagrams the internal components of the MODEL 900. The heart of the unit is a high speed 64180, 8 bit high integration CPU chip. The CPU communicates with the UART (serial port), ROM, and RAM. Battery backed-up RAM stores configuration data even if the power is removed. It can hold data for over 5 years without power applied. The opto-isolation circuitry is designed to provide a barrier between the outside world and the CPU. This eliminates CPU errors in high noise environments. 1

3 CHAPTER 2. INSTALLATION This chapter focuses on the steps necessary to unpack and install the MODEL 900. Read this section before attempting to apply the MODEL 900. System installers should read this chapter before attempting to install the unit into a cabinet, or before connecting any electrical power to the MODEL Unpacking and Inspection Inspect the MODEL 900's shipping container. Is there evidence of damage or mishandling? If damage exists contact your shipping carrier immediately. Eason Technology cannot be held responsible for damage in shipment. Compare the contents of the container with the packing list which is attached to the exterior of the shipping container. Your MODEL 900 shipping container should include the following: 1. MODEL This manual 3. Mounting brackets (two) If any items are missing or damaged, contact Eason Technology immediately. 2.2 Through Panel Mounting 4. 1/4" 8-32 Screws (six) 5. Mounting template The MODEL 900 is designed to be mounted either through an equipment panel (in a panel cut-out) or on a flat surface. The through-panel mounting will allow the MODEL 900 to meet NEMA4 specifications for water resistance, and will also resist dust, dirt and non corrosive chemicals. Improper installation could result in damage to the MODEL 900 and other equipment installed in or adjacent to the panel containing the MODEL 900. For safety reasons please follow these instructions closely. 1. Prepare the opening in the panel. a. Tape the enclosed mounting template to the front of the panel in the desired location (see Figure 2.1). b. Drill 3/8 " inside the cutout to facilitate cutting. c. Use a sabre saw or some other type of sheet metal cutting device to cut out along the "cut here" line. d. Using a file, carefully remove any burrs or rough edges that may cut or scratch during the remainder of the installation. e. Remove the paper template and discard. 2. Carefully insert the MODEL 900 into the hole in the panel from the front side (Figure 2.2). 3. Hold the MODEL 900 to the panel, and insert the mounting brackets as shown in Figure 2.3. a. If the MODEL 900 is to be used in continuously wet applications, we recommend that the installer apply a silicone sealer to the gasket prior to installation. 4. Tighten the mounting clips to secure the MODEL 900 to the front panel. 5. Inspect that the MODEL 900 fits snugly up against the front panel, and that there are no gaps or holes that may allow water or dirt to enter the cabinet.

2.3 Flat Surface Mounting The MODEL 900 can be mounted on a flat surface in applications which do not require water-tight or dust proof operation. Examples of this type of environment are inside equipment cabinets, control rooms, or in "clean" factory environments. If you need to obtain NEMA 12 or NEMA 4 mounting, refer to Section 2.2 Through-Panel Mounting. Locate the two mounting brackets. Attach them to the rear of the MODEL 900 with the four, 1/4" 8-32 screws. Determine a mounting location for the MODEL 900 which will allow eye-level viewing of the screen, unobstructed access to the keypad, and room for cables and connectors to exit at the bottom. The mounting location should be away from moisture, oil, dust, and other flying debris. 1. Drill two holes at the top of the mounting location spaced 2" apart. 2. Insert two screws (#8 or #10 size) into the holes (see Figure 2.4). 3. Temporarily mount the MODEL 900 on these fasteners (see Figure 2.5). 4. Mark the bottom holes. 5. Remove the MODEL Drill the holes (see Figure 2.6) 7. Re-install the MODEL 900 and continue to Section 4 (see Figure 2.7). FIGURE 2.4 INSTALL TOP MOUNTING SCREWS 5

2.4 System Interconnect Wiring the MODEL 900 is a relatively simple task. All you have to hook up are power and communications. This section will describe each individual connector on the MODEL 900 and how to apply it. FIGURE 2.8 MODEL 900 BOTTOM PANEL Power/RS422 Connector (Connecting Power) The Power/RS422 Connector is an 8 pin screw terminal type connector which provides the DC input power and RS/422/RS485 connections. The MODEL 900 can accept from 9.5V to 30V DC at 5 watts. The MODEL 900 actually tries to begin working as soon as the power source passes 4.5 V. This means that at start-up the current requirements from the DC power source can exceed 1.3 Amps. This current surge may cause some power sources to enter current limit rather than to begin working. For this reason it is recommended that the MODEL 900 be used with a power source which is unaffected by this type of current surge. Unregulated supplies, linear power supplies, or high current (2 Amp) switching supplies are recommended. Only connect the DC power source to the DC IN + and the DC IN -. These inputs are reverse protected. DO NOT connect the DC power ground to LOGIC GROUND. Logic Ground, as with all I/O, is optically isolated from the chassis (earth ground). Connecting Logic Ground to DC IN - will result in lower noise immunity. For connections to RS422/RS485, please refer to section RS232 Communications The Model 900 comes ready to communicate via RS232. It can also communicate via RS422. Selecting the communications type and settings is covered in Section 3.2. The default settings are: 9600 Baud No Parity 8 Data Bits 1 Stop Bit Carriage Return only The RS232 connector provides for serial communications between the Model 900 and a variety of devices. These types of connections are most commonly referred to as SERIAL PORTS. Examine your application carefully and make sure that you have TRANSMIT on the Model 900 connected to the RECEIVE of your controller, and RECEIVE of the Model 900 connected to the TRANSMIT of the device under control. The pinouts are shown below 7

When RS422 is selected, the RS232 connector is disabled. To use the RS422 connections, follow the same conventions outlined for RS232, connecting outputs on the Model 900 to inputs on the controller, and inputs on the Model 900 to outputs on the controller. To enable the RS422 transmitter, refer to section 3.2. Figure 2.9 depicts proper RS422 connections. 11 CHAPTER 3. COMMUNICATING WITH THE 900 Communicating with the MODEL 900 is fairly straightforward. Data is transferred between the MODEL 900 and the controlling device via an RS422 serial communication link. The data transferred between the two devices follows the ANSI standard with some enhancements detailed in Chapter 4 - MODEL 900 COMMANDS. 3.1 Getting Started Using the MODEL 900 is quite simple. First you must connect the MODEL 900 to your controller. Connect one end of the communications cable to the RS422 connector on the MODEL 900 and the other end to an available serial port on your controller. 3.2 Configuring the MODEL 900 Terminal Emulation Upon power up, the following screen will appear. This screen will remain present until a key is pressed, or until the Model 900 receives a character. Eason Technology Model 900 Firmware Version 2.10 RS-232, Protocol=9600,N,8,1 Pressing Shift-Help during the first five seconds will put the Model 900 in Setup Mode. The following screen will appear. BAUD RATE--> 9600 CR > CR PARITY-----> NONE XON/XOFF---> OFF DATA BITS--> 8 KEY REPEAT-> 250,50 STOP BITS--> 1 BACKLIGHT--> AUTO MODE > RS LOCAL ECHO-> OFF Use UP/DOWN arrows to select, LEFT/RIGHT arrows to toggle, Press ENTER when done. By using the UP or DOWN arrows select the parameter you wish to change. The default communications settings are shown above. Use the LEFT or RIGHT arrow keys to change the parameter. Press the ENTER key when you are done changing the parameters. The Model 900 will return to the previous screen (startup screen). The unit is ready to receive or transmit characters at the new settings. The settings will also be saved in non-volatile memory so the next time the Model 900 is powered up, they will be used. 9

The following ranges are available for each parameter: Baud Rate: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, Parity: NONE, EVEN, ODD Data Bits: 7,8 Stop Bits: 1,2 CR: CR (carriage return only), CR/LF (carriage return linefeed) XON/XOFF: OFF, ON (software handshaking) Key Repeat: NONE, , , 750-4, Backlight: AUTO, ON, OFF Mode: RS232, RS422 Local Echo: OFF, ON The Key Repeat parameter specifies the number of milliseconds delay prior to a key repeat occurring if a key is pressed and held. The second number specifies the number of key repeats per second that will occur after the initial key press if a key is pressed and held. NONE disables the key repeat function. The Local Echo determines whether the Model 900 echos every key pressed to the screen or not. 3.3 Trouble-Shooting Communications If you have problems communicating with your MODEL 900, check the serial port connections between the MODEL 900 and the PC. Look for the following things: 1. Is power applied to the MODEL 900? 2. Is one end of the communications cable connected to the RS232 or RS422 connector on the MODEL 900? 3. Is the Model 900 connected to the appropriate port on the host device? (Some controllers have multiple serial ports.) 4. Are the communication cable connectors securely seated into their respective sockets? Try tightening the hold-down screws on the communication cable. 5. Is the Model 900 properly configured for RS232 or RS422? (See section 3.2 for more information.) 10

CHAPTER 4. MODEL 900 COMMANDS Eason Technology's Model 900 has as full of an implementation of the ANSI terminal standard as is practical for the package. It also provides some functionality not necessarily found in other terminals in its class. All standard ANSI functions are implemented that can be dealt with on an LCD monochrome display, therefore commands dealing with colors other than black or white are not implemented. Additional features include the ability to specify the scrolling range. That is to say that if you only want lines 3-7 to scroll while the others remain stationary, you may do so easily. Also, the Model 900's large Banner characters are supported with ANSI style escape sequences. 4.1 Syntax This chapter contains a description of all control sequences. These sequences are inserted into a program in the host controller and sent to the Model 900 via an RS422 serial port. Each command consists of the following format: ESC[ parameters COMMAND Where: ESC is the 1 byte ASCII code for ESC (1BH). (Don't use the three characters ESC.) [ is the character [. parameters are the numeric values you specify for #. The # represents a numeric parameter. A numeric parameter is an integer value specified with ASCII characters. If you don't specify a parameter value, or if you specify a value of 0, the default value for that parameter is used. COMMAND An alphabetic string that represents the command. It is case specific. For example, for the command ESC[#;#H: print #1, CHR$(27);"[2;10H";"X row 2 col 10" is the BASIC command to print the words "X row 2 col 10" beginning on row 2 in column 10. (CHR$(27) is the ASCII command for ESC) Also, for the command ESC[#;#; string y: print #1, CHR$(27);"[2;1;";chr$(34); HOMING NOW ;chr$(34);chr$(121) is the BASIC command to print the words "HOMING NOW" beginning on row 2 in column 1. (CHR$(34) is the ASCII characters for, chr$(121) is the character y) 11

ESC[#;#f 14

Device Status Report ESC[6n The Model 900 outputs a cursor position report sequence on receipt of the device status report command. ESC[6n Comment: The response is of the form: ESC[#;#R where the first parameter specifies the current line and the second parameter specifies the current column. Save Cursor Position ESC[s The current cursor position is saved. This cursor position can be restored with the Restore Cursor Position command sequence. You can perform a maximum of 31 saves. ESC[s Restore Cursor Position ESC[u Restores the cursor to the value it had when the Model 900 received the Save Cursor Position command sequence. Note: the ESC[s command must be used prior to the ESC[u command. ESC[u 15

Print Large Text ESC[#;#;"string"y To print large text on the screen. This effectively increases the text size to print four rows of twenty characters instead of the normal eight rows by forty characters. The first # sets the beginning row position (1-4) for the specified string. The second # sets the beginning column position (1-20) for the specified string. The string does not wrap no matter what is specified for standard text. ESC[#;#;"string"y Print Huge Text ESC[#;#;"string"Y To print "huge" text on the screen. This effectively increases the text size to print two rows of ten characters instead of the normal eight rows by forty characters. The first # sets the beginning row position (1 or 2) for the specified string. The second # sets the beginning column position (1-10) for the specified string. The string does not wrap no matter what is specified for standard text. ESC[#;#;"string"Y Erase in Display ESC[2J Erases all of the screen and the cursor goes to the home position. ESC[2J Erase in Line ESC[K Erases from the cursor to the end of the line, including the cursor position. ESC[K 16

Set Display Attribute ESC[#;...;#m Sets the character attribute specified by the parameters. All of the following characters have the attribute according to the parameters until the next occurrence of Set Display Attribute. Blinking Text has no effect on Large and Huge Displays. ESC[#;...;#m Parameter (#) Meaning 0 All Attributes Off (normal) 5 Blink On 7 Reverse Video On 30 White Foreground Black Foreground White Background 47 Black Background Example: This command allows for the creation of blinking reverse video. print #1, CHR$(27);"[7;5m" Enable Line Wrap ESC[?7h Sets the terminal into automatic line wrap mode. This is the default condition. ESC[?7h 17

Disable Line Wrap ESC[?7l Resets the terminal to not line wrap. Characters past the end of the line are thrown away. ESC[?7l Set Cursor Type ESC[#?c Sets the type of cursor visible on the Model 900 screen. The cursor can be off, insert type, or overtype type ESC[#?c Parameter (#) Meaning 0 Cursor off 1 Insert type cursor 2 Overtype cursor Set Scrolling Region ESC[#;#r This allows you to set a specific region on the screen as a scrolling region. The first # specifies the top line that will scroll and the second # specifies the bottom scrolling row. The second # must be greater than the first. The #'s can range from 1-8. ESC[#;#r 18

Clear Scrolling Region ESC[r This allows you to set a specific region on the screen as a scrolling region. The first # specifies the top line that will scroll and the second # specifies the bottom scrolling row. The second # must be greater than the first. The #'s can range from 1-8. ESC[#;#r Set Backlight Function ESC[1;#v To configure the desired operation of the backlight. The backlight can always be off (#=0), always be on (#=1), or be in auto mode (#=2). In auto mode, the backlight goes off after ten minutes of inactivity. The backlight comes back on the first time a key is pressed. ESC[1;#v Parameter (#) Meaning 0 Backlight auto 1 Backlight on 2 Backlight off Set CR/LF Interpretation ESC[2;#v To define the response to the receipt of a carriage return/line feed. If #=1, a CR/LF is interpreted as a CR/LF. If #=0, a CR/LF is interpreted as a CR only. ESC[2;#v Parameter (#) Meaning 0 CR/LF = CR 1 CR/LF = CR/LF 19

Set Handshaking ESC[3;#v To enable or disable XON-XOFF handshaking (flow control). ESC[3;#v Parameter (#) Meaning 0 No Handshaking 1 XON/XOFF Enabled Keyboard Reassignment ESC[#;#;...#p The first ASCII code in the control sequence defines which code is being mapped. The remaining numbers define the sequence of ASCII codes generated when this key is intercepted. However, if the first code in the sequence is 0 (NULL) the first and second code make up an extended ASCII redefinition. To reset a specific key back to its default, don't specify any new ASCII codes (see below.) The maximum number of key reassignments is 16. The maximum number of bytes for each assignment is 32. ESC[#;#;...p Example: ESC[0;59;49;48;48;13p Reassigns F1 to send 100 followed by a carrage return when pressed. 0;59 are the original ascii codes sent out by F1. 49;48;48;13 are the axcii equvalent of <cr>. Comments: ESC[127p returns the Escape key back to its default. 20

Clear Keyboard Reassignments ESC[127p This command is used to clear all previous keyboard reassignments leaving the keyboard in its default state. ESC[127p Setup Key Repeat Rate ESC[#;#k This command configures the key repeat rate of the Model 900 keypad. The first # is delay in milliseconds before the repeat begins. The second # is the repeat rate in 50ths of a second. ESC[#;#k Comments: Example: ESC[100;9k sets the delay before the repeat begins to 100 milliseconds. The key will then repeat every 9/50ths of a second. Draw Graphic Line ESC[#;#;#;#...Z This command allows you to use the graphic capability of the Model 900 to draw a line on the display.
