Polling Interface Power Connection To connect the Polling Interface to a power source, follow these steps 1. Remove the fuse from the front panel and turn off the power supply when connecting the power from the power lead. 2. Connect a 48 VDC line to the BATT terminal and the ground to the GND terminal. 3. For earth/frame grounding, connect a copper wire to the FRM GND terminal. (DPS Telecom recommends at least a 14 gauge wire.) Connect the other end of the wire to an earth/frame ground. 4. Turn on main power with the Polling Interface fuse still removed. 5. Connect the black common lead of a volt meter to ground and the red lead to BATT. The meter should read the battery level ( 43 to 53 VDC). If not, check your power supply. 6. Do not reinsert the Polling Interface's fuse (powering up the unit) until all other connections have been made.

The craft port is used to connect a PC to the Polling Interface for firmware downloads. To connect to the craft port, use the included DB9M-to-DB9F download cable. Note: The craft port and the RS-232 port use the same circuit. Connecting to the craft port disables all RS-232 polling on the leg connected to the Polling Interface. Before connecting a PC to the craft port, disconnect the RS-232 connection on the back panel. Pinouts for the craft port are shown in Figure 9. 11 7 6 Jumper Options Jumper 21: Keep closed for converter mode Jumper 26: Open for normal operation (default) Close for firmware download Fig. 10. Polling Interface PC board showing user-adjustable jumper options. There are two user-adjustable jumper options for the Polling Interface. When your Polling Interface is shipped from the factory, both jumpers are set to the correct positions for ordinary operation. However, it is a good idea to check the unit before installation to make sure the jumpers are in the correct locations. If you ever have trouble with your Polling Interface, first check to make sure the jumpers are in the correct position. Jumper 21 (shown in Figure 10), enables and disables converter mode. The default position for Jumper 21 is closed (converter enabled) and should never be changed. Jumper 26 (shown in Figure 10), enables and disables firmware download mode. The default position for Jumper 26 is open (firmware download disabled). Jumper 26 should stay in this position for all normal operations. If you ever download a firmware upgrade to your Polling Interface, you must first set Jumper 26 to the closed position. 7 Front Panel Operation Craft Port Fuse Fuse Alarm LED Mode Switch Communications Status LEDs Fig. 11. You will need to download firmware to the unit only if updated firmware is released. Firmware updates are installed using one of the following DPS Telecom utility programs: ComloaderW for Windows or DPSLoad for MS-DOS. Either program may be used. 8.1 Preparing the Polling Interface for Firmware Update Before you can install a firmware update, you must prepare the Polling Interface: 1. Open the Polling Interface case and set Jumper 26 to the closed position for firmware download. (For more information, see Section 6, "Jumper Options." 2. Connect a PC to the Polling Interface's craft port using the included DB9-to-DB9 download cable. Note: The craft port and the RS-232 port use the same circuit. Connecting to the craft port disables all RS-232 polling on the leg connected to the Polling Interface. Before connecting a PC to the craft port, disconnect the RS-232 connection on the back panel. 8.2 Updating Firmware with ComloaderW To update the firmware using ComloaderW for Windows, follow these steps: 1. Follow the instructions for preparing the Polling Interface given in Section 8.1, "Preparing the Polling Interface for Firmware Update." 2. Run ComloaderW on a PC connected to the Polling Interface. 3. Click the COM Port Settings button to open the Communications Settings dialog box. Set the baud rate to baud.
13 9 4. Select the firmware upgrade file by typing its directory path and file name in the Task File box, or browse to the firmware upgrade file by clicking the "..." button. 5. Click the Start button. The firmware upgrade will be automatically downloaded to the Polling Interface. While downloading, the ComloaderW window will display the checksum, type, and phase of the task file and the baud rate of your connection to the Polling Interface. The progress bar indicates the progress and completion of the firmware download. The Open Protocol button opens the Protocol Window. The Protocol Window is for troubleshooting purpose only. Do not open the Protocol Window unless you are requested to do so by DPS Telecom Technical Support Personnel. If you wish to abort the firmware download, click the Abort button. When the firmware download is complete, click the Exit button to exit ComloaderW. After downloading, follow the instructions for rebooting the Polling Interface given in Section 8.4, " Rebooting the Polling Interface." 8.3 Updating Firmware with DPSLoad To update the firmware using DPSLoad for MS-DOS, follow these steps: 1. Follow the instructions for preparing the Polling Interface given in Section 8.1, "Preparing the Polling Interface for Firmware Update." 2. Run DPSLoad from the same directory as the firmware upgrade file on a PC connected to the Polling Interface. 3. When DPSLoad launches, it will present you with a screen with options for com port, baud rate, and program selection. If you make an incorrect entry and wish to correct it, you can at any time press F10 or Escape to start again. 4. DPSLoad will prompt you to select a COM port. Enter the COM port number (1 through 4), and press Enter. 5. A default box listing baud rate options will appear. Select baud. To select the baud rate, press Tab and use the cursor keys to move the highlight bar to 38400, then press Enter. 6. A default box listing firmware options will appear. Select the Polling Interface firmware upgrade file. If the file is already selected, press enter. To select firmware upgrade file, press Tab, use the cursor keys to select the file, and press Enter. 6. DPSLoad will prompt you to begin the download. Press Enter, and the download will begin. If the download was successful, the words "Download Successful" will appear on the screen. If there was a problem with the download, an error message will appear. When the firmware download is complete, press F10 to exit the program. After downloading, follow the instructions for rebooting the Polling Interface given in Section 8.4, " Rebooting the Polling Interface." 8.4 Rebooting the Polling Interface After the firmware update is completed, return the Polling Interface to normal operation. 1. Disconnect the download cable from the Polling Interface's craft port.
14 10 2. Return Jumper 26 to the open position for normal operation. 3. Reboot the Polling Interface. To reboot, remove the fuse from the front panel, wait 30 seconds, then reinsert the fuse. 9 Technical Support DPS Telecom products are backed by our courteous, friendly Technical Support representatives, who will give you the best in fast and accurate customer service.
